Aww, Gintoki. I can absolutely believe this, the way he does this to help a friend, for the here and now... It doesn't do anything for himself, and he isn't thinking about long-term consequences - he's just protecting what he can protect. I can see that as a very Gintoki thing to do, if he thought that's what it took.
And I love how you make it clear to the reader that Gintoki isn't taking any pleasure from this, and that he isn't in love the way Katsura is - although Katsura as the POV character doesn't notice!
