This sounds so familiar! I mean, of course writing can be stressful in itself, too, but it can still be so... equalizing. Stabilizing? Something in that ballpark. ;-)
Oh, and on being self-indulgent: YES! DO IT! And please do not be self-conscious about it at all, because it is a *good* thing - both for you as the author and us as the readers. Fanfic is best when it is self-indulgent - that's what makes it so lovely and satisfying. :-)
The snippet is intriguing and beautifully done - I confess my mind immediately went to "sex pollen", but there are so many other wonderful options. I can't wait to see where you go with this!
