I know! I've read some early fic that's OOC, but others that get them pretty exactly, from way early on. And yes, I think that's what makes SGA so satisfying, as you read between the lines and then they actually give you evidence that you're not hallucinating, that it's really there. Not sure which direction this is going - the writers are so tuned in to the fan-base that I suspect they're writing things like McShep partly in response to how we've glommed onto it, but it's a more subtle interaction than, say, SPN.

And yes, the infamous 'if you get it in canon you don't need it in fic!' that kept me away from SPN fic even before the show went to pot. (and YGO, well, we never got enough stuff with the Kaiba bros anyway, and that was all I wrote! XD) Though with SGA, they still haven't given me everything I want to see...then again, the fic doesn't either (there's a surprising dearth of 'presumed dead' in canon or fic - and you know how I love that trope - especially given that SG-1 barely could go 3 eps without Daniel seemingly dying on them. We have this private theory that it's because no one, neither the screenwriters nor the fic writers, know what Sheppard would do if he actually thought he'd lost a teammate for more than about 30 seconds...)
