I'm with you one this, I've always imagined that the screenings to go on Atlantis should be amongst the most difficult. So yes it's probably fanon but as you said, it's hinted at in "Intruders" and even in Rising Weir calls them all "the best of the best" before they all go through the gate, so the fanon does have some basis at least.

And I would be baffled if the screening didn't eliminate 90% of the candidates to begin with anyway (already with the way it is you've got people like Kavanagh passing through :p).
