MUNCLE picspam: hurray for hats!

Busy day packing and cleaning. The Move is on Wednesday, the goodbye party's tomorrow. So to take my mind off of that, I am picspamming MUNCLE.

As the worst spies ever international super-spies, Napoleon and Illya don a variety of hats, most of which are ridiculous, or else ridiculously adorable - more the former for Napoleon, who accrues negative fashion karma nearly every time he puts something on his head; more the latter for Illya (even if it is a crime* to cover his hair.)

*punishable by death in eight countries, including Japan, San Rico, and Ingolstein.

So, in celebration of headgear!

Deadly Goddess
"Must we do this, Napoleon?"
"Yes. Yes, we must!"

Napoleon is quite fond of fezzes...unfortunately...

Come to the Casbah

Illya, on the other hand, is more partial to the burnoose:

Arabian

And will even fashion his own from a parachute, when he's not playing Illya of Arabia:

Foreign Legion

Napoleon can go for a burnoose himself:

Foreign Legion
But he can't quite pull it off.

Oh well, it's better than the pith helmet:

Her Master's Voice

Or the winter gear:

Yukon
"What do you mean, I look like a beagle?"

Matterhorn
"Never mind, Napoleon..."

5 Daughters
(you'll have to take my word for it that it's Napoleon in the middle. And that's Illya in blue.)

Napoleon has hats for all occasions!

Tigers Are Coming
...including this one. I have no idea.

Dressed up for a head of state:

Round Table

Round Table
You love me even in a bowler, right?

Napoleon is just hat-crazy in "The Round Table Affair":

Round Table

Round Table
Are you actually going out in public in that?

King of Diamonds
Oh, come on, Napoleon.

King of Diamonds
Oy vey!
(Tsk, tsk. People in absurd false mustaches shouldn't throw stones, Illya.)

Okay, how about this one?

Shark

Shark
Nope, Illya doesn't care for this one, either.

Illya generally wears hats only in the line of duty, as part of his disguises:

Foreign Legion
Here, for instance, he's disguised as a piece of coral...

Ultimate Computer

Mmmm, disguises.

Ultimate Computer
...now will you take that thing out of your mouth?!

Hula Doll

And occasionally while in uniform:

YoHoHo and a Bottle of Rum

Neptune
Mmm, Russian naval officer hat...

Or sometimes when he's just impersonating a Gypsy. Or, um, whatever he's wearing this for:

Terbuf
The difference between you and me, Napoleon, is that I make silly hats look good.

Terbuf
I'll drink to that!

Then there is the beret.

See Paris and Die
Tell us more...

In the '60s, berets were apparently a sign of Evil, as seen on the standard THRUSH uniform.

Consequently, both boys look absolutely fetching when pretending to be THRUSHies:

Arabian

Concrete Overcoat

Even moreso when they're matching!

Concrete Overcoat

Fourth season sadly does not feature many hats, but makes up for it with those it does have:

Prince of Darkness 2
--No, Napoleon, it's on your head, but it doesn't count!

Ah, here we go:

Maze
Why is he wearing a fishing hat in the desert?

Maze
And who cares, if he's going to sprawl so artfully while he does it?

Maze
Silly hats are also good for expressing I-think-my-partner's-dead-angst.

Maze
Aww!

And fourth season also has the best Illya-in-disguise, of course:

Gurnius
Ahhhhh, glasses...

Gurnius
Disturbingly sexy for a neo-Nazi.

Gurnius
Thrush dude: He must be UNCLE, we don't have anyone this hot on our side!

Gurnius
Napoleon concurs.
("...On the one hand, kissing my partner's perfect lips now would probably blow his cover. On the other hand...mmm, blow...")

Now! I must sleep.

(And let me know what amazing hats I've forgotten!)

Meany theory is that there does seem to be a direct correlation between the silliness (and indeed apperance) of Napoleon's hats and the lack of quality of the episode. Mr Vaughn being the true professional, is we suspect, attempting to distract from the plot/dialogue/gorrilla at great personal fashion cost to himself-bless him.

McCallum on the other hang seems to like using hats for dressing up and disguise (in all his career actually) It may be possibly because he is known for his oh so heavenly goldeny hair, so for him to be someone else he has to cover it up. Have you seen the colour version of The Vulcan Affair (episode one, series one)? Some twit has decided Illya needs his hair dyeing red, it's oh so very wrong on a very large number of wrong levels.

Mmm, thanks. Now I want to watch MUNCLE.

The gypsy one reminded me of my favorite Ilya moment ever. A silly girl went over to him and asked, "Do you believe in gypsies?"

"Of course not. They are figments of the imagination."

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I nearly just spewed water all over my keyboard from that first one alone XD Dear God the hats! I clearly need to add to my MUNCLE collection, because I hadn't seen any of those. Although considering some of them... maybe that's a good thing.

[identity profile] feikoi.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfect glasses shine in those last shots. Also perfect commentary :P (also the last pic reminds me of early SG1 Daniel and no I don't need a new fandom *backs away*)

Illya looks so pretty in hats whereas poor Napoleon... (though I concur both boys suit berets *ahem private moment* -;)

I loved your commentary, it was just perfect - funny and quite narrative too. I'm still laughing at Coral!Illya.

Thanks for the lovely screencaps and the giggles.

Awesome pic spam! Thank you! I haven't seen enough Muncle eps to contribute but I'm really looking forward to watching all these crazy hats appear in all the eps that are waiting for me to be watched. Hee hee!

The "I look like a beagle"-one is my favourite: it cracks me up every time I watch that scene :o)

[identity profile] batagur.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed this. It made my evening! Thank you for posting it! :)

[identity profile] gritsinmisery.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yowza! That, I think, is one of my favorite picspams EVAH. *mems*

[identity profile] epicycles.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL This is the best picspam EVAR. Crying with laughter in a public computer lab, here.

I was just thinking the other day that I need to make an animated "Masters of Disguise" icon to celebrate the ridiculous hats.

(Also, does the fact that I find Nazi!Illya about 200% hotter than regular Illya make me a bad person? So wrong...yet so right...)

[identity profile] wishfulaces.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"What do you mean, I look like a beagle?"

Ha! My caption for that one, before I scrolled down, was "Even Illya was shocked by Napolone's headgear."

[identity profile] nangi-akki.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That beagle shot always kills me. The hat is ridiculous but I think Illya quite likes it :)

Thanks!

[identity profile] nangi-akki.livejournal.com 2009-05-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You may be on to something there with your Hat quality episode rating theory. It does seem that Napoleon's millinery misadventures are largely confined to the less than stellar episodes. Conversely, in a good ep even when the hat is silly he looks quite good (for example The Shark Affair and that little knit cap).

[identity profile] ahavia.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Love the pics! Thanks for putting them together.
Ahavia

[identity profile] cynaravurzyn.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
The 'ugly hat' aka the bomber I think of all of the pictured hats (okay, the watch cap too) looks the least self-conscious of Napoleon's headgear. There is a certain preciousness that always spoils things otherwise. Being precious is a help with a beret, naturally.

Didn't you know, if Napoleon wasn't with U.N.C.L.E. he'd be a Shriner? Definitely little car, not minibiker.

Epicycles, yes. Must be time for the riding crop. Similarly, that first of the Gurinus pics, I had Allo Allo flashbacks. Or, wondered what site Indy was about to demolish by setting off another trap.

[identity profile] suchthefangirl.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
That was very awesome. Thank you so much for this. Made my night!

[identity profile] kanders07.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Nice. Now I'll have to spend the evening watching MUNCLE. Such a struggle. : )

[identity profile] jessebee.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Laughing A LOT right now. \o/

[identity profile] crossgate-teri.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
These were great. My biggest problem is now I want to figure out which episode each picture is from. Like Napoleon with white hair? Gracious I don't remember an episode like that. Of course, I recognize the last few pictures as my favorite episode. Thanks!!

[identity profile] mishklet.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wonderful. Both myself and [livejournal.com profile] felicia_angel (who is visiting for the weekend) got a good laugh from your lovely picspam and even better commentary. And for berets being signs of Evil, they certainly do look sexy on our boys. Thank you much! :D

ah, picspam I can really appreciate...

I think you are onto something! Or, RV, what a noble sacrifice (even if My Friend the Gorilla has funny hats I couldn't bear open the ep to take 'caps XPPP)

Agreed, that Illya dons caps to cover the most distinctive hair (ah, he's in a Chinese hat (a coolie hat? that's not a very PC term, is it?) in one s1 ep, I missed that one!)

OMG the red hair of Vulcan! nooooo~! At least they righted that heinous wrong quickly...

"millinery misadventures" = XDDDDDDDD!

Hee, I love that moment myself!

[identity profile] xparrot.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Heh - you've probably seen some of these but just blocked them from your memory...I know I did, I was flipping through eps going, "Wait, really?? Oh, Napoleon!"
ext_3572: (muncle illya)

[identity profile] xparrot.livejournal.com 2009-05-23 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I know, are the glasses not totally anime? He's pretending to be evil at that point, so it's perfect...

Illya's hair - and I say this loving early-Daniel's floppy 'do - is worth watching the show for all on its own. I might have to do a picspam devoted to it...
