Gintama Fic: Everyone's got to write their own happy ending.

Not quite sure what to say about this one, though I feel I should say something. First to warn that it is rather joke deficient and thus not in the proper Gintama spirit. Moreover it's quite uncanonical, as it's a few-years-in-the-future fic and it's an established part of Gintama canon that the chars don't age, being the stars of an episodic gag manga/anime. Various character interpretations and relationships are equally uncanonical. There's allusions to a few 'ships, while the story itself is kind of anti-ship, at least when it comes to Gintoki pairings. Not trying to diss on anyone's OTPs, and this isn't necessarily how I think the chars are; but it's how they look to me sometimes, in certain lights. I like that light, and this story is cotton candy fluff for me, but maybe it could be a little sad, especially if you find unrequited love painful.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gnine and [livejournal.com profile] naye for reassuring me that it wasn't as pointless as all that. Any comments as always appreciated.

Gintama: Everyone's got to write their own happy ending. {~6,700 words}
PG, Futurefic
In which Shinpachi is married, Gintoki is not, Kagura is all grown up, and the Yorozuya will always be the Yorozuya.

disgustingly long "review"

[identity profile] nijibug.livejournal.com 2011-03-10 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
sprawled on his back on one of the couches with his bare feet up on the cushions. He was perusing the latest issue of Shounen Jump, muttering the sound effects aloud

Ohhh my heart ♥
Really, you paint Gin-san so perfectly ;_;

"Oh, no, that's just Hedoro-san's daughter. She's actually very sweet, in spite of the horns."

That's adorable! Ahaha, and I see whut u did thar with the "monster" pun xD

Aww. I love the anachronism of the Gintama universe in that they have email and cellphones, yet Kagura and her dad always handwrote letters to each other; I love that you've carried that endearing aspect. ♥ (Also I'm glad Sadaharu's with her even though I'd half-hoped she would've left him with Gin-san so he won't get too lonely! x3 Aw, and emails to Okita~)

Of course Katsura reads shoujo. Of course he does. :]

Wahh!!! Shinpachi stammering on "b-babies"!! SO CUTE HEHEHE! ♥ ♥

"Though come to think of it, maybe I could go and tell Kagura-chan I'm actually gay and in love with Zura. He'd probably play along..."

Um, no Gin-san. That would be a terrible idea. *sweatdrop*

awwwwwww Gin-san just wants a letter from Kagura! Q______Q

*rolling on the floor laughing forever at Gin-chan's reacting to his kids' crushes on him* Omg I can picture his expression so perfectly! XDDDDDDD

"Sometimes," Shinpachi said. "But family doesn't"
and
"Someone who's good with kids, and good at teaching lessons more important than what they learn in school. Someone who knows how to be a samurai, even in the Edo we're living in now"

Tears. Rolling down my face. Plopping onto my keyboard. T______T
Thanks for giving Shin-chan such amazing lines!!!

"we do want to have children in a few years—neither of us have parents to move in and help out, so it'd be good to have someone else there. Though she told me not to mention that to you, didn't want to scare you off..."

D'aww~ Grandpa Gin! = 0=

...

BAWLLLL THAT ENDING~~~ The letters were so simple, sweet, and just neat in a way that — while I half-wanted to come away from the fic with a nice, bittersweet, twinge-y feeling in my chest — I wasn't able to because it promised such a happy 未来! x3

......man, I apologize for that awfully rambly "review" orz

Shinpachi makes a good grownup. :) Then again, he was sort of always the one with his head on straight, wasn't he?

*wibbles* Good stuff. :)

You are officially my favorite Gintama writer ever. I followed your Pandemonium story in ffnet and it was pretty awesome too. I'm really impressed how you managed to nail the characters perfectly.

(A-and I love the pairings here. I like the bit deal of Okita/Kagura/Gin-san~)

Memories!

*crumples in to mush* TOO MUCH LOVELY DIABEETUS.

My tears were pouring from my eyes down to my cheeks and make a pool on my favorite pillow like drools in the morning.
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?

OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING THIS!

Seriously. You wrote asexual/aromantic Gintoki, and I never quite realize just how much I miss seeing asexuality as valid until I run into something like this, and it makes happy way out of proportion. ^____^

—you love all of us, all your friends; we're all precious to you, aren't we? We're all part of your family. You just don't fall in love to do it; you get there by other ways.

THIS.

And then you make my heart melt, because it's okay for him to be the way he is, and he'll always have his family even though he's not going to do a Shinpachi and settle down with wife and kids. They won't stop being family because someone did some growing-up-into-a-responsible-adult (and Shinpachi would do that, if any of the Gintama characters would). So much love, and the kind of love that does things to my heart in a way that pairings really can't. ♥

And oh, Kagura. Gintoki would be one to say something like that, that would hurt her and you never quite know if he was did it out of laziness or because he knew that it would be best for her, because Gintoki is tricky like that. Aww.

And she's coming back! No splitting the Yorozuya family! ♥♥♥

(BTW, did you just make a sneak mention of 悪魔の実? *laughs*)

Like you, I know this isn't necessarily how the characters and relationships are in canon, but it works, and it feels IC for everyone involved, and I'm so glad you wrote it.

This was so heartwarming and beautifully written! ♥♥♥ The letters at the end are perfect. Thank you for writing this ;w;

It was a very moving but still funny story. I think you conveyed the kind of fun you would have in a warm family very well. Thank you, I really enjoyed reading this!

OK not really a cmment on this story

Is there a way you can do a story to fund raise for the damage in Japan -- I think many of us would like to be supportive of earthquake assistance efforts and your gintama fic would be a no-brainer connection?

You know... its going to be your fault I have to start watching Gintama, now. :)

I am incredibly glad this fic exists.
