darkfic: Promises to Keep

Okay, I take back what I said about Lex in "Promise." This is what's really going on. Major props to [livejournal.com profile] jakrar for inspiring us to peer deeper into the mechanism, and to [livejournal.com profile] gnine for hashing out more of the details.

This is a fanfic and episode meta in one. I could have written yet another essay, but this was more fun and only took a couple hours to dash off. The characterization might make more sense if you're aware of our current interpretation of Lex.

Smallville: Promises to Keep {2,063 words}
PG-13. Warnings for meteorfreak!Lana and mastermind!Lex. Well, less warnings for the latter, more reassurances. He's been sorely lacking of late in the show proper. Also massive spoilers for "Promise." The dialogue and action are all from the episode's script; the words in between are mine.

( Lex Luthor is used to desperation. )

Lana warps everyone around her. She gets everyone off track for their destiny. Clark and his mission (what happened to tracking down Zoners then going for training? Ollie's going to come back and beat your ass.) Lex and his world saving (I find it interesting that she's now told both Lex and Clark that they don't need to save the world. In Fallout, then in Labrynth.). Lois with her place by Clark's side. Chloe, well she just takes up so much of her damn time I'm sure her grades and career are suffering. If the writers are aware of it, they are just awesome and we could still save Lana as a character. If not, well... it would suck to live in the world they apparently live in. It's not MY world, by any means.

Ooops. *blushes* You're quite right. I guess I just naturally see the slash everywhere....

OH GOD. I've never felt so bloodthirsty and nauseous at the same time. And despite feeling bad for Lex for what he has to do, I still think that this fic is so awesomely cool.

It's a victory that tastes of ashes; it's a pain so sharply piercing it's ecstasy.
BEST READING OF THAT SCENE EVER. It's so satisfying how a thoroughly confusing (for me at least, unspoiled and Lana-sick and all) episode makes much sense now. :D

Like, this is why Lex is always sending her away overseas and such without him, he needs the distance to think clearly...and it also justifies Clark being such an asshat, if he's under the influence so much of the time...
Judging by the brilliance of "Justice" and it's Lana-lessness, and how muddled/stupid things seem when Lana is presented as the center of SV universe, ITA! ^_^_^_^

Re: He/Him

Just for the record, I'm with [livejournal.com profile] jakrar on this one. I don't like the confusion of I/me, but I don't find it as jarring as the confusion of he/him or she/her. "Him" in the place of a clear subject pronoun sounds illiterate to me. JMHO... but you know I wouldn't enjoy myself with you half so much if we didn't debate the finer points of grammar and comma usage now and then. ^__~

Love you.

Glad you liked it! Yeah, we were pretty content to find an 'explanation,' as it were, the ep itself was frustrating if accepted "as is"...

::sighs::

If only.

*blushes* thanks!

Lana as a meteor freak is the only logical explanation for everyone's obsession with her. Nothing else makes sense.

And this? Made Promise so very much more palatable. I can forgive Clark, Chloe, Martha, etc for being assholes if they've all been under the influence of the PrettyPrettyPrincess!MutantLana :)

And Lex being smart enough to a) figure it out, b) inoculate himself and c) plan on using her abilities to save humanity - makes me very happy.

I got this weird feeling in my stomach while reading this. Dread, I think. You sucked me right in and made me feel Lex's fears and that totally rocks.

Do you mind if I do a DVD commentary on this?

I'd be thrilled and honored if you did! Drop me a line if/when it goes live? ^^

Sure thing! It'll be posted on [livejournal.com profile] dvd_commentary and in my journal
