Brief Kaiba's b-day fic writ for the kaibabros contest, originally intended as borderline parody but it might not have turned out that way. Angst/humor is a perfectly legitimate category. Sure it is.
Gen, immediately pre-Duelist Kingdom, featuring a recombination of anime and manga canons which may or may not fit with either timeline. I couldn't figure it out, so please just pretend the chronology works.

It's hard to be totally humorous with the Kaibas, their OMG!PAINFUL!BACKSTORY tends to leak in around the edges...of course it's hard to be totally angsty, either, because Kaiba is such a loon...

I've been wanting to do a Mokuba-made-the-trenchcoats story for a while (because where else did he get them? Kaiba got a total fashion makeover while in a coma! Very Odd.) and had the line about the buckles in mind all along (really, Yami and he are so competing! Especially in the manga - "I have three buckles on my leather sleeveless shirt thing, *and* two belts!" "Well, I have completely useless straps on my arms and my legs! Beat that! Bwahahaha!!") So the bday was a good excuse. Though how it went angsty in the beginning, I have no idea, I just have too much fun with Kaiba being all tragic-past-y ^_^

Lovely story. The recounting of Seto's birthdays was sooooooo sad. Especially the first one with the chess set --

"I'm sorry, Mokuba," his brother had told him, the next time they were able to talk alone. "I had to. If he'd found it--I couldn't let him touch it."

That really sums up the through-the-looking-glass world they were living in -- where the only way to keep Mokuba's present was to destroy it. And then Mokuba making and hiding his subsequent presents -- saving them for a future where he could give them to his Nisama...

And yep, I did want to write humor, but then I started thinking about the possible previous birthdays, and...Kaiba's past is just such a terrible treasure trove of aaaangst. (though I'm tempted to go all super-fluffy and do the next birthday, when Mokuba would actually have the chance to give him everything...)

Ah! You're Joon, yes? So glad you like the stories! I didn't realize we had so many fandoms in common - great taste in anime, you've got! ^__^
And, yes, the Kaiba brothers cuteness cannot be resisted. I was reading the YGO manga happily without being inclined to fic for it in the least, and then this summer the translations got to the Duelist Kingdom stuff with the lockets, and *wham* - instant addiction. But it's great to know you're enjoying the fruits of my obsession! ^^
