fic: A Constant Struggle, 2/2

Beware of sap. (And falling typoes! [livejournal.com profile] gnine tried to give a beta but we're both still under the weather and easily distracted.) I'm terribly fond of this variation on Lex and the Clex, so this is likely not the last you'll see of this universe. Or Conner, because he is really far too much fun.

Smallville: A Constant Struggle, 2/2 {5,467 words}
PG-13; AU futurefic, Static Shock x-over; mild Clex and V/R
Robert and his boys are invited over to family dinner with Lex Luthor and three generations of Kents.

Read it on AO3

But everyone had known the truth, how with his cronies, the crime bosses and other supervillains, Lex Luthor must have been triumphant, celebrating the loss of his hated foe. Ouch. That's pretty damn horrible. Wouldn't blame Lex for cracking and going seriously evil after a while - but well, he had Kon.

"I wonder if it is the pheromo-spores," Martha remarked brightly, "I've been wondering if they're as interesting as Clark makes them sound," and the three of them leaned over the railing to get a good view of the carefully orchestrated chaos unfolding on the street below.

I died a little. Martha rules :)

I wish anyone would ever talk to Lex this reasonably on the show. I watched the episode with Richie's Dad being racist yesterday - Robert is way cool, even though he's kind of an ass about the "Static" thing. (And gosh, imagining Virgil older - he'd be the hottest toon character ever!)

If you write more in this 'verse I'd love to see Clark and Lex publicly pretending to be nemeses :D

Awww, that was simply awesome!

I adored the last line, just perfect! I also liked the remark about clowns and super-heros. Very funny.
Yeah, this was fluff, but fluff can be good and I enjoyed this. Nice work.

This was so delightful. I enjoy your portrayal of Lex, the supervillianhero. And his relationship with Clark and his family is exactly what Lex needs to keep him on the hero side. I think the way how you convey that he would be a supervillian in fact if not for his personal ties is genius. He knows this. Clark and Jonathan know this. He needs them. Martha is teh goddess. I thought that using Robert's viewpoint in the story was inspired. We saw and understood the complex familial interaction of the Kent-Luthors.

I hope you don't mind but I'd love to friend you. LOL, this way I can keep up with your loverly fic and eljay comments.

Liked it a lot. For curiosity's sake, what were they being asked with?

[identity profile] moonprincessnat.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Very nice! I really like how well you've illustrated the complex nature of Lex--he's not easy to categorize, as Robert as discovered. Thanks for sharing. :-)

The family that performs superheroics superhysterics superhistrionics super loves each other eats pie together, stays together.

Families of superheroes should totally form a support groups bond with each other. I love that the friendship between the SS and SV families transcend territories/localities.

The Superman family members in particular shouldn't be as isolated from each other (or dead) as they are in most canons. *sighs*

Lex family fics never fail to brighten my day. A Lex family fic in this awesome universe? MADE OF WIN!

Dood, family get togethers with a fluffy ending. ♥ This version of Lex is all sorts of awesome, he's evil except not but he actually is when it comes to some things.

Martha totally win at the end though. *snerk*

I love the endings, the complete nonchalance of the parents. XD

Oh, wow, another great installment of this great series! I completely skipped over the summary because I knew this would be a great fic, and I was soooo surprised by Kon being there. But the dynamic between him and Lex and him and Clark is so very real. Lex, just because you don't want your son to grow up, doesn't mean you can prevent it.

And now you've got me wondering what happened to the other younger heroes, like Robin (from SS crossovers) and Speedy (from JLU, which has had SS crossovers), if maybe they formed a Titans team or something. :)

Martha is perfect. Nice ending!

*hee* I love this series! The whole drama with Lex and Conner was great as well as Robert's prospective on it. I'm glad that they made up in the end, though.

Having Virgil and Richie meet farm!Clark and and Kents was grin-inducing, with the scene where they all realize Lex is Conner's dad topping the list.

Your Supervillian!Lex persona is lots of fun--I hope we see more in this series!

Beautiful finish to the story! I really like Robert's conversation with Lex, and I especially like Lex knowing full well that Connor and Clark are listening to everything said. Love the reconciliation scene, with Connor's head on Lex's shoulder, and Clark gathering them both into a hug. *purrs happily*

Lex took his time. "Superboy can make an unofficial appearance," he said finally. "One city-wide fly-by, no longer than a quarter of an hour, starting at 10:15 AM precisely. If you oversleep, you miss the chance."

"All right!" Conner cried, pumping his fist. "Awesome!"

"Lex," Clark said, "what happens at 10:15?"

"Absolutely nothing," Lex said, in a very particular voice that Robert knew meant he was being completely deceitful by being entirely honest.

Clark put an arm around the supervillain's shoulders. "Then what happens at 10:30?"

That is so perfect! A truly and awesomely Lexian moment.

Then there's the lovely bit with Lex and Richie talking supergenius-shop over Richie's latest invention, while Connor goes all Clark-enthusiastic over the prospect of Martha's pie, and the utterly wonderful closing with the dust coming down and Martha cheerfully hoping it's the pheromo-spores. Huzzah! *dances with glee* Love this!

Ok, been meaning to friend you for a while...

[identity profile] astrea9562.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
...because I really like your fic and meta, but this story is brilliant. Wonderful everybody - but especially Conner and Lex.

Sadly, I have almost zero time to comment on a regular basis and I hope that is okay with you. However, I didn't just want to drive-by 'friend' without saying hi!

So, hi there!

;D

Oh. My God. You realize this crossover is what forced me into the Static Shock fandom, yes? *squees loudly at update*

Ok, I found this series on Smallville slash and am IN LOVE with this universe! You have no idea how much I am begging you to write more.
I watch Static with my 4 year old and have thought- you know there is something there between Virgil and Richie!
Flawless my love, flawless!

[identity profile] bandgeekamelia.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
"And also, hello, invisible?" Virgil added. "How are we supposed to stop invisible accidents? Who do you think we are, superheroes?"
One of my favorite lines. There were too many to copy paste them all. SO GOOD!!!
