There's also the fact that, if a narrative is sloppily constructed, the putative heroes can often come across as hypocritical, judgmental jerks. Like Angel, who one minute "doesn't pick and choose" who he helps to redeem themselves, and the next is slicing off Lindsey's hand and leaving him to bleed out in a crypt. It's not that I think that Angel is bad, or Lindsey is good; it's that I find it very difficult to sympathize with self-righteousness, especially when it's coupled with unexamined character flaws.
Loki wasn't as fucked over by his supposed loving family and so-called friends as, say, Lex Luthor was; but he was, enough. (Actually, the Avengers do better than most because most of the characters are openly flawed, and the one moralistic guy, Steve, really is crazily upright...)
