So currently in SPN fandom there is a good-old fashioned...shipping war? Gen war?--there is a contretemps going on, and I feel the need to rant here because otherwise I am liable to get into something on tumblr, and who wants that?

Cut for those who don't want spoilers for the current season of SPN or don't give a fig about the show, which is wise of you, keep that up! Those who care, or enjoy reading about dumb fanwank, continue... )

In conclusion -- SPN continues to be the oddest fan experience in that, as frustrating and flawed as the show is, it still delivers to my id far better than the fandom...

I'm assuming the Americans on my flist are already on this, but just in case, if you haven't yet, please vote!

(I'm afraid I don't have anything less stressful to offer! Fannishly speaking I'm still deep down the Supernatural rabbithole, with the fanfic and sideblog to show for it - I forgot how inspiring and yet agonizing fanning on an on-air TV show can be - but right now I'm mostly just biting my nails and trying to avoid the news for as long as I can hold out for...)

So [livejournal.com profile] gnine was just up in Vancouver for work and happened to go to a SPN shooting this afternoon! And I am torn between being thrilled for her and being SO JEALOUS - I've always wanted to see TV/film shooting anyway, but of a show we're actively fanning on...!!! J2 were being silly together and Jensen was driving the Hero Impala (Baby is apparently as crazy loud as everyone says), plus Nina Lopez-Corrado was directing (new director on the show, this is only her second ep, but her first was "Red Meat," the h/c extravaganza I was squeeing about before) and just, eeee! waaaah! If only I'd known for sure it was happening, I could've driven up myself...(it's about 3 hours plus a border crossing...the fact that I'm seriously considering it should another opportunity present itself, well, such is the fangirl life...)

The short review: eeeeeeeee *flails everywhere*

I can now call it - 11 seasons in and Supernatural just had its best season. Not a single terrible ep in the entire run and several of my all-time favorites, including the finale, which had everything I wanted and a couple things I didn't know I wanted but now totally do, in particular a potentially major game-changer that I did not see coming. There was a casting spoiler that Samantha Smith might be in the episode, but we were assuming ghost, not that after 11 years Mary Winchester would return from the dead...!

(Not to mention, Dean doesn't actually kill a female this season. And given the various character introductions, and how the finale passed the Bechdel test twice, they really do seem to be trying to turn over a new leaf...)

Also I totally called it!

Plus, you know:

xparrot: Chopper reading (books)
Trying to join up with mainstream Supernatural fandom is weird for me. Usually at this point in fanning I'd be devouring fic, and/or writing my own. And it's not like there isn't a ton of SPN fic out there - it's the largest single fandom on AO3. But finding what I want to read is difficult...not least of which because I'm not quite sure what I want to read. For all its flaws, SPN is almost a Type A fandom for me in that it gives me pretty much everything I want to see. (Along with plenty I'd rather not see at all, however...)

The other problem with the fic is that I'm out of step with a large part of the fandom - and particularly with the Dean-fan side of the fandom. I adore Sam, I really do (especially the character he's become - he's developed quite a lot over the seasons, more than Dean, in compelling ways. And Jared Padalecki is made of adorable and has gotten a lot better as an actor.) But while Gnine is a Sam-fan, Dean was always my favorite and apparently always will be. Even if I spend large chunks of the show wanting him smacked...that's part of his charm. I do love the assholes. And that always puts me in an odd place in a character-fandom, as I'm often inclined to side against my favorite - I'll take Sam's side over Dean, or Thor's side over Loki. This doesn't seem like a contradiction to me, because it's still all about my favorite, just from another angle...

But more than that, I don't fit with the Dean-fan side because I'm not, as it turns out, a Destiel shipper. Which is weird because I love Castiel... )

So, any recs for gen SPN fic?
xparrot: Chopper reading (books)
In case anyone was wondering, SPN still has what originally sucked me into the show. That is, writers with an uncanny ability to channel 14-year-old fic-writing fangirls. The last ep was an h/c + presumed dead bonanza such that I've rarely seen (if you're familiar with the show, they've added a new plot twist to make the threat of death actually seem threatening. Well, not to the audience, to us it's more like setting up Chekhov's latest gun and I'm looking forward to how it's going to go off. But Sam & Dean are slightly more nervous about biting it than usual. And Dean takes the idea of Sam dying as well as he's ever done, to the tune of temporarily killing himself to try to puppy-dog-eyes a Reaper into giving him Sam back. (Said Reaper, Billie, is one of the more awesome chars they've introduced and I'm already dreading when the show kills her off. But she survived this ep! \o/ Also the actress is apparently a fan herself...))

The problem - or, maybe not the problem, because in a way it's a strength as much as a weakness? - the thing about Supernatural is that it has maybe the tightest character focus of any show. Which makes it an all-or-nothing proposition, at least for me, when it comes to fanning. Because if you buy into the basic conceit, that the Winchester brothers and their relationship is the most important thing in the show's universe and the reason to watch, then it's one of the most fannishly satisfying series ever made, bringing the angst and melodrama and smarm and love like no other TV I've ever seen. Even Starsky & Hutch, while it might beat out SPN on pure physical h/c (and not by that much), can't measure up to the emotional revelations and mutual sacrifice of brothers both figuratively and literally selling their souls for one another.

More nattering, no s11 spoilers, cut because I can feel most of my remaining flist rolling their eyes and sighing )

...Also, the real-life factor doesn't help. Way back in first season Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles said that they hit it off from the start and were becoming great friends and all, bonding the way casts often do, and that was sweet, and translated well to the fraternal chemistry of their characters. Eleven years on when they still say they're best friends, and their wives are best friends, and they talk about how their kids play together - in the same preschool, as JA moved cross-country to live within a mile of JP...I am not into RPF, at all, but they make it hard! Possibly worse because I'm not slashing them at all (their families are far too cute), but the friendshipping is harder to resist when as far as I can tell it's 'canon'...
xparrot: Chopper reading (books)
SPN has been renewed for a 12th season. After years of rolling my eyes at the show's apparently, if thematically appropriate, unkillable nature - I'm embarrassingly happy now to have more coming. (Really they should at least get to season 13, for symbolism's sake. And season 14 would get them to episode 300. Considering the head of the CW has repeatedly said that SPN will go on for as long as Jared and Jenson are interested, it's not outside the realm of possibility, if far beyond the realm of sense or taste.)

So we're getting a season 12. And after our obsessed rewatch painstaking analysis of the rest of the show, [livejournal.com profile] gnine and I know exactly how it's going to go. (Or should go...)

Spoilers for season 11 so far; anything beyond already-aired eps is pure speculation )
xparrot: Chopper reading (books)
So recently [livejournal.com profile] gnine and I found ourselves suffering from a dearth of fanning, and for reasons* ended up subjecting ourselves to the last few seasons of Supernatural.

That's not the surprising thing, if you know us. For all the many flaws that eventually drove us from the show, SPN has some of the most blatantly fanservicey h/c and angst ever put on TV. And Jensen Ackles is still a pretty, pretty man. So we decided to do a speed-watch, fast-forwarding through anything that wasn't Dean & Sam being stupidly codependent, or meta comedy, or the less irritating Castiel and Crowley storylines because I have a thing for angels and demons and even if SPN repeatedly fails to deliver the goods there, it's got just enough for me to keep trying. And for the most part it was what we expected, and we've been having fun, where 'fun' is fifty percent mockery and fifty percent shameful fangirl indulgence.

Then we reached the current season - eleven for those counting, because CW doesn't know when to quit - and were in for a shock. Because, at least as of last week's ep, season 11 is actually...um...good. No, really. Like, it's not the best thing on TV; but if you liked the first couple seasons of the show, you'd probably enjoy it now. Not only that, but it's explicitly dealing with some of the things that made the show so bad to begin with.

Some spoilers, if you care for details. Also a little squee. )

So yeah, eleven season on, I'm back into Supernatural, actually looking forward to more. Did not see this coming...(now if only there were some fic that wasn't AU...) And honestly, if you're looking for something to watch and ever enjoyed the show way back when, it's worth checking this season out.

* The primary reason being this vid (which was extra hilarious to us because our 21-month-old housemate is obsessed with "Shake It Off", to the tune of asking for it several times a day, such that we all have it memorized.) Once we saw it, we kind of had to know what was going on. If you were ever a fan of SPN past s4 you should see it - technically it's massively spoilery for s9-10, but in practice most of it doesn't make sense unless you actually watch said seasons, which I wouldn't especially recommend, so. Also Osric Chau really needs to be cast on a better show for me to watch.
xparrot: Chopper reading (books)
Okay, so I've been watching Supernatural since its first season. For the first couple of seasons I was there for the pretty boys and brotherly h/c, but for years now I've been into it for the trainwreck factor, as the show doesn't so much go off the rails as blow them up, with big sticks of dynamite, twirling its metaphorical mustache as it pushes the plunger to send everything spiraling down into the abyss. It's bad, is what I'm saying, on nearly any axis of bad; and I laugh when I watch it, in between fits of screaming OH JOHN RINGO NO.

As of this last episode, though, I'm starting to suspect that the showrunners themselves are not only out to make bad TV but are actually intentionally trying to kill the show off, in a brutal and sickening way. Or maybe that was just the episode? Because, all jokes aside, what the everloving fuck, show.

spoilers for 7x03, and warning for standard SPN triggers, i.e. horrifically pointless violence to women )

I'm seriously wondering if the game plan is that by the end of this season the Winchesters are the monsters everyone is hunting down. (Crowley gets together a heroic gang of past monsters resurrected from Purgatory, and they save the world from Dean?) Because by now? I would genuinely enjoy that!
xparrot: (b5 shadow)
So [livejournal.com profile] gnine has been here for a month, a stopover before she heads out of the country again, this time to the wilds of Middle Earth Ancient Greece New Zealand. Naturally, in between hosting friends & family come to see her off, we have partaken in much television.

Supernatural's premiere was epic! One of my favorite eps of the show, honestly...Which isn't to say it was good by any means, but it was awfully entertaining, between spoilers! for 7x01-02 )

Also have been keeping up with Doctor Who - enjoyed the second half of the season overall, didn't especially love it but I think that's more me than the show. It's a different show than it was before; while it's funny and cute and clever, it doesn't touch me in the way it used to, and I can't even say exactly why. I feel like if this had been the show it was from the start, that I very well might have loved it for what it is; as it is, I still haven't quite gotten over expecting something that it's not. Which isn't to say I wanted either RTD or David Tennant to stick around; RTD had overstayed by at least a season, and I quite like Eleven and Matt Smith's take on the Doctor. But I need to put myself into a different mindset when I watch it now - like when I'm watching other kids' shows, don't think about it and just enjoy the nifty adventures. (And Rory. Much <3 for Rory and his amazing go-with-the-flow-even-if-it's-off-the-edge-of-a-cliff-and-plunging-into-a-bottomless-abyss practicality. And he and Amy are adorable. Though I'm hoping for new Companions next year - maybe someone not from Earth? - and give the Pond-Williams their happily-ever-after...)

(Speaking of kids' shows and adorable couples, Ben 10 has started again, and aww I love my mindbogglingly silly superhero cartoon, and Kevin/Gwen is still one of my favorite het couples ever. <333)

Then after we watched the Who finale [livejournal.com profile] gnine wanted to see the Merlin premiere, which I watched with her despite having quit the show early last series - said watching proved a mistake, because the ep ended in a spectacularly teasing place and now I badly want to see next week's - even though it's Merlin and with SPN in the regular watching roster, my stupid TV meter is already hitting critical...but maybe it'll be worth it? The premiere had some cute character moments, Arthur seems to have grown up, and he and Merlin are inching closer to actual friendship (in that it's a satisfyingly reversed Smallville, the chars destined to become great friends and allies, rather than nemeses). And with Morgana gone all supervillain, I can accept the Morgana/Gwen as entirely ended, mourn it and stop hoping for more tantalizing moments that the show cruelly refused to deliver on (not that I'm bitter or nothin' :P) And of course I am and always will be incredibly weak to h/c, so...

Also [livejournal.com profile] gnine has showed me all 4 seasons of In Plain Sight (Mary is an awesome char, Marshall is nearly as awesome, I still love Paul Ben-Victor and miss I-man, and the show desperately needs more h/c), and last night we saw the first couple eps of Suits (cute, now where's the crossover fic with Harvey Specter going up against Barney Stinson in a business deal?)

Now I'm just mopey about the lack of space opera. As far as I'm aware there aren't any shows currently on the air that are set in outer space/other planets - Who is the closest, but that's still on Earth more often than not. Recently happened to rewatch a few eps of Firefly and Farscape, and yeah - along with Star Trek and B5 those are still some of my favorite TV ever, and I want more. Gimme my spaceships, dang it!
xparrot: (happy seal!)
Have seen the first 6 eps of Tiger & Bunny with the bro - mucho enjoyment but then we're both weak to superheroes. It's not really a superhero parody so much as a straight superhero show that happens to fall on the sillier end of the spectrum, though it seems to be slowly sliding to the more serious side, as they do. And may answer the age-old question: if Bruce Wayne and Darkwing Duck were forced by their corporate sponsors to become partners, who would snap and kill the other first? Seiyuu bonus: +30 in sexiness for Hirata Hiroaki (mmmm) and +42 in brain breakage for my beloved Tsuda Kenjirou as the flaming-in-every-meaning-of-the-word Fire Emblem (?!!?!?!?111!!?!)

In other superhero news, Peter David wrote the last ep of Ben 10, which was a not-really-disguised-at-all anti-Gitmo ep. No really. (Apparently it was mostly Dwayne McDuffie's idea, though he wasn't the writer. Not at all surprising, but damn, it makes his loss hurt that much more.) (Also it aired on Friday 4/29, interesting timing to say the least). Torn between OMGLOLWHUT at political soapboxing on a ridiculous kid's cartoon and crying honest tears of rage because seriously, if you can reduce the moral complexity of a situation to the black&white ethics of a superhero world in 20 minutes, it's not that fucking complex.

Am up to Skypiea in One Piece reread (or not re- in this case because for various reasons I've never read or watched about half of Skypiea) and love this series so, so much. I think my only real criticism of it (other than the lack of nakama-hugs, siiigh) is that the shounen fights sometimes get a little long - which is an aberration for me because I love fight shounen battles (though more animated than in manga, where sometimes I have trouble following the action), but with OP I'm always so anxious to get back to the plots and characters that sometimes I'll start tapping my foot. Still is my favorite manga ever.

Also I've said it before but I love Odacchi's female chars THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIxa million-IIIS much. squeeing about the lovely ladies of OP, a little spoilery through Arabasta )

In non-animated news, regarding the latest ep of NCIS (8x23) - haven't been watching most of this season but [livejournal.com profile] gnine recced this ep to me for a specific reason, namely OT4 FOREVER AND ALWAYS ZOMG: a 4-way hug!!!! <3333 That's it, the show could end now and I'd be happy~... (also in the previous ep, Ziva calling McGee "not just any partner" AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Also, mostly for my own reference, I have still been watching SPN (AHAHAHAHAH the only thing right about this show is HOW WRONG IN EVERY WAY it is. Not content with having killed off almost every recurring female char they've ever had, now they're going back and rekilling women they've killed before, and bringing back cool one-shot female chars to kill - oh, Amber Benson, whyyyyy?)

...That being said, I would so watch the Castiel &Crowley show. It's like the Odd Couple! With more blood and sex! (Okay, that last might be wishful thinking, but then again, with this show's crack count, who knows?)

And [livejournal.com profile] gnine & I will be watching SV's finale this Friday...Lex is back, we have no choice. Pity us!
xparrot: (happy seal!)
So, according to the most recent update, the seiyuu (VAs) for the Supernatural anime will be the same as the Japanese dub of the show - Uchida Yuuya as Sam, Touchi Hiroki as Dean. I'm only passing familiar with either of them - you can hear their dubbing in this vid, starting around 7:40. Dean's voice is not quite what I would've expected and Sam sounds like such an uke, but I think they could both work out.

...Of course what I'm really hoping this means is that if/when they do get to Castiel (the first run of eps is only going to covers seasons 1-2, but if it does well they'll likely do more) they'll keep his dub voice - can't embed this vid, but listen to it here.

(That's one of my favorite seiyuu, Tsuda Kenjirou. As I coincidentally was just talking about, Tsuda's voice is the sex. He's perfect for Castiel, just the right balance of controlled reserve and arrogance, with a touch of vulnerability. Also did I mention the sex?)

ETA: (And Cas uses "watashi," of course. Mmmm, somehow guys using "watashi" always sounds way hot to me...)
xparrot: (happy seal!)
First off - just heard from [livejournal.com profile] naye that Madhouse anime studio is going to be making a Supernatural anime. ZOMGWTFBBQ THIS IS GOING TO BE LEGEN - waitforit - DARY. On the one hand, SPN is wildly popular among Japanese fangirls (hawt incesty brothers ftw!) so how can they go wrong; otoh SPN is so very very American, how can they go right? I can't wait to see. Also crossing my fingers that the seiyuu casting will break my brain.

In related news, have been feeling adrift of late, not really having a fandom. And in my drifting I floated back to past affections, and after happily paddling in Clex for a bit, I, um, somehow seem to have gotten back into Yu-Gi-Oh. Yeah, don't ask. I have no excuse - I've seen and read dozens of better anime and manga (like, most of them...) before and since, and I originally got into it before YGO: The Abridged Series even existed. Yet somehow Kaiba Seto and his little brother manage to maintain a target lock on my fangirl heart. (I can't help it. Kaiba manages to hit nearly every favorite character button I have - bad-ass arrogant asshole cum reluctant redemption character codependently loyal to his sibling/only family. Also manga!Mokuba is as awesome as he is adorable. Also also Tsuda Kenjirou's voice is still the sex.)

So I've been flipping through my YGO manga and watching my HK bootleg DVDs (and fixing up the subtitles of some of my favorite bits, good translation practice since the "English" on a lot of them is somewhat less than comprehensible.) and fastforwarding through all the %$*@(% card games, naturally. And then ficcing - I've at long last finished my not-really-dead-Mokuba WIP "Safeguard," am posting the final chapters now. And maybe a bit more after that, if [livejournal.com profile] gnine has her way.

Have also rediscovered an old trouble writing anime-based fic - while my Japanese isn't anywhere near good enough that I could write fic in Japanese, I can mentally compose dialogue. When I fic I often try to "hear" the character's voices speaking the lines, and it's no different with anime fic, except that since I never watch dubs, the voices are in Japanese. Which means that on occasion I find myself sitting before a story trying to figure out how to best render kudaranai in English, and writing "Of course" when the char is really saying Touzen da.

Regarding SPN 5x12 and 5x13: spoilers; possibly unpopular fan opinion? )

Also finished s4 Buffy/s1 Angel. Yay friendship! Yay h/c! Yay Spike in tweed on a swingset! (Joss Whedon is a Twin Peaks/David Lynch fan, y/y?)

While I'm not really fanning, I've been enjoying this season of Supernatural - angels in trenchcoats are a major button for me, so the increased Castiel presence is much appreciated, and otherwise the show seems determined to not so much jump the shark as pole-vault over it with a rocket pack, which is if nothing else entertaining - better a bang than a whimper, no?

Concerning the latest episode, 5x09: Spoilers )

And then there was the new Doctor Who, "Waters of Mars"...yup, more spoilers! If vague ones. Including mention of the X-mas special preview )

We have thoroughly succeeded in bringing [livejournal.com profile] utopiantrunks over to the MUNCLE dark side - Illya is far too blond and tiny for her to resist. She responded by writing her own fabulous tag to "The Gurnius Affair" - and unlike certain slash fans, she can actually write the NC-17, and write it well. Hot stuff, and awesome character insight, what more do you want?

I keep forgetting to say it - big huge thanks to whoever nominated my fics for the Stargate Fan Awards! Very cool.

Last Thursday's Supernatural (4x18) entertained us as much as it entertained everyone else - as [livejournal.com profile] naye relates here, with five fangirls in the room it was quite the deafening experience. We kept having to pause and rewind to catch lines missed due to the squealing. Ah, I am gonna miss our fangirl gatherings so much...

SGA's "Trio" - [livejournal.com profile] gnine & I watched it, and then rewatched the whole ep. It was that much fun. [livejournal.com profile] naye and [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper have covered the salient points, so just a few more thoughts in passing:

spoilers )

Then there was Supernatural, "Dream a Little Dream of Me", which I liked better than most of their recent efforts, though...

and spoilers )

Torchwood has really been rocking the casbah! Good show, show, keep it up! The premiere is still my favorite of the season, but I've enjoyed all the eps, and the latest (2x04) made me happy, because...

you guessed it, spoilers! )

The winning show this week was Numb3rs, with Avatar coming in at a close second.

What can I say about Numb3rs except minor, shallow spoilers and shameless slashing )

Then, Avatar, which I haven't really mentioned much before, so a few words: more mild spoilers, and lots of love. )

Supernatural also premiered, of course! Liked the ep, generally; didn't think it as strong as last year's opener, but... a few more spoilers )

And last but not least...wait. Yes, least. Though it actually wasn't as bad as all that, all things considered. Anyway, a few random comments on Smallville! even more spoilers )

[livejournal.com profile] nekokoban was wondering why there wasn't more Dresden Files/Supernatural fic out there. And by more we mean any.

SPOILERS for Dresden book-verse.

seriously, why isn't there? )
xparrot: Chopper reading (supernatural everything)
[livejournal.com profile] naye just posted this link; it's a month old and I'd heard some of it before, but this was my first time reading it:
Eric Kripke and the Fannish Concerns: "We Won't Be One Tree Hill with Monsters!" [warning: contains spoilers], in which he proves himself to be a ginormous adorable X-files/LotR/Buffy-referencing fangirl fanboy, and states outright why Supernatural rocks:

"But the difference between us and other shows is when they make missteps, they say, 'Go f--- yourself.' When we make missteps, we pay attention to the fans and we course-correct. So, fans, I love you all, but stop worrying. "

Judging by Jo last season, this is actually true. If anything the show is too fan-conscious, really; it panders to fangirls at the expense of plot, storyline elaboration sacrificed for a few more minutes of aaaaangst. But hey, I'm all for a little pandering! I didn't sign onto SPN for the plot, and as long as all shows don't start doing it I'm tickled having a weekly filmed fanfic.

As for the spoilers regarding the next season, is it bad that my first thought which is cut because it's spoilerific )
