on anime, and the getting back into thereof

First off - just heard from naye that Madhouse anime studio is going to be making a Supernatural anime. ZOMGWTFBBQ THIS IS GOING TO BE LEGEN - waitforit - DARY. On the one hand, SPN is wildly popular among Japanese fangirls (hawt incesty brothers ftw!) so how can they go wrong; otoh SPN is so very very American, how can they go right? I can't wait to see. Also crossing my fingers that the seiyuu casting will break my brain.

In related news, have been feeling adrift of late, not really having a fandom. And in my drifting I floated back to past affections, and after happily paddling in Clex for a bit, I, um, somehow seem to have gotten back into Yu-Gi-Oh. Yeah, don't ask. I have no excuse - I've seen and read dozens of better anime and manga (like, most of them...) before and since, and I originally got into it before YGO: The Abridged Series even existed. Yet somehow Kaiba Seto and his little brother manage to maintain a target lock on my fangirl heart. (I can't help it. Kaiba manages to hit nearly every favorite character button I have - bad-ass arrogant asshole cum reluctant redemption character codependently loyal to his sibling/only family. Also manga!Mokuba is as awesome as he is adorable. Also also Tsuda Kenjirou's voice is still the sex.)

So I've been flipping through my YGO manga and watching my HK bootleg DVDs (and fixing up the subtitles of some of my favorite bits, good translation practice since the "English" on a lot of them is somewhat less than comprehensible.) and fastforwarding through all the %$*@(% card games, naturally. And then ficcing - I've at long last finished my not-really-dead-Mokuba WIP "Safeguard," am posting the final chapters now. And maybe a bit more after that, if gnine has her way.

Have also rediscovered an old trouble writing anime-based fic - while my Japanese isn't anywhere near good enough that I could write fic in Japanese, I can mentally compose dialogue. When I fic I often try to "hear" the character's voices speaking the lines, and it's no different with anime fic, except that since I never watch dubs, the voices are in Japanese. Which means that on occasion I find myself sitting before a story trying to figure out how to best render kudaranai in English, and writing "Of course" when the char is really saying Touzen da.

Well, the Japanese watched Westerns and made chambara; took the humble blue jean and created designer denim; bought cows and raised Kobe beef. I am expecting this hybrid to be AWESOME, or at least wildly entertaining.

I'd think that, really, then, it might be easier to write the dialogue out in Japanese when it's a sticking point & going back to translate/tweak it...? I've been waiting a very long time to see Safeguard finished (it's always a pleasure to see somebody write good 'fic about the Kaiba brothers) and I know how it is to find yourself stuck like that...

Heh, I've done that a few times. Mostly I just put down an approximation and move on, but if ever my dialogue in animanga fic reads a little odd, that could be why.

Safeguard is basically finished! The first draft, anyway, and I'm editing it now - I've posted 2 more chapters, and should have the rest up within the next couple weeks.

Sadly at least for the first release they're only adopting the first 2 seasons, so no Castiel!

I do have hopes for Japanese ghosts stories, though - so much potential and the show didn't really ever use any. When I was first watching SPN (back in season 1) I daydreamed of writing a spec screenplay about the Winchesters meeting an onmyouji (ideally a fast-talking chain-smoking modern type!)

Supernatural the anime.... ohgod. Does this mean I should revive crossover of DOOM? XD (I was re-reading it again lately for some incomprehensible reason. I think the reason I stopped was a combination of everything after S2 of SPN making me unhappy and me getting into GX ^^)

Also, the conclusion of "Safeguard" makes me happy. ♥ I still think you should still give the card games on motorcycles show a shot. It has adorable sibling stuff too, because let's face it, that sort of shit is a YGO staple. GX had it too.... actually, I still like GX best.

...I have like 20K+ words of my own SPN/YGO x-over, which were totally jossed by SPN's s2 but still...!

ahahah see I'd consider it but Gnine would KILL ME DED if I got dragged into another Show With Card Games, she still hasn't forgiven me for pulling her into this one ^^;;;; otoh post-apocalyptic card games ftw!!! Oh man...

Kaibas are still in there somewhere! Their company still exists. And it is now officially canon that the Ushio in 5Ds is the same Ushio from the start of the original series which makes me LAUGH FOREVER! So there can be giant crossover fics that are way better than the movie in the sense that they include more than just the mains!

Heh, but then I'd reveal just how poor my Japanese is! ^^; To be honest, if the dialogue is complex exposition then I'm usually still thinking of it in English, out of necessity; it's when it's the basic relationship or insults type stuff that it's in Japanese...

Kind of randomly dropping by, because your last paragraph is so much what happens to me a lot. I have to physically stop myself from adding 'ne' sometimes. And all the -kun/-chan stuff is so hard. I don't think I can omitt it sometimes because it totally changes the connotations if I do. So yeah, word on "translating" fic to English sometimes.

Heh, yeah - I usually try to avoid "fangirl Japanese", but honorifics are the exception; if I'm writing something set in Japan, then I use -san and -sama and the rest - also things like "Nii-sama," because there's just no good way to do them in English, and hey, the chars are Japanese. (When writing in an anime fandom that's decidedly not set in Japan, like FMA, I tend to debate a lot more...)
