xparrot: Chopper reading (Default)
I've had such a parched few months writing-wise that I've decided to do NaNoWriMo. Except rather than writing one novel I've decided to just do write-anything-whatsoever-as-long-as-I-get-the-wordcount. Have a couple original things I want to work on as well as a couple fic. There's a long McShep epic which I never posted because I never finished it, and though it's been years and SGA fandom has fallen by the wayside, I still really like the story (I have over 50K words of it) and would like to tie it up. And since [livejournal.com profile] gnine and I have been rewatching SGA, I'm now inspired.

Speaking of which, [livejournal.com profile] gnine and I have been rewatching SGA these last couple weeks. Breaking news: we still love Rodney McKay, film at eleven.

And then we got to talking about the possibility that Carlos might've learned to apply his skill at SCIENCE! to saving people on Atlantis. So this happened:

Only Found in Lost Cities (4607 words) by Xparrot
Chapters: 2/4
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis, Welcome to Night Vale
Rating: General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply
John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Carlos/Cecil
Additional Tags: Crossover, POV Outsider, Tourists in Night Vale, Cecil is scary, I love him, (so does Carlos), but yeah so scary

John and Rodney go looking for a former Atlantis scientist with annoyingly perfect hair, and end up in the most scientifically interesting community in the US. Now the question is, will they ever be able to leave...

(The story is pretty much done; I'm posting in parts because I'm still waffling on the last lines, but the end should be on AO3 within the next few days. It's looking like after that there will be at least one more Night Vale fic - though this one, in the name of NaNo, I've gone to hell with it and dove headfirst into totally unsupported headcanon and ridiculously out-of-tone angst. There are hospital vigils. I am stunningly predictable but I was up until 7 AM writing for the sheer glee of it, so, yeah. I don't know why the heck my fangirl soul latched onto Cecil/Carlos but I am not complaining!)

ficlets

xparrot: Chopper reading (sga team meal)
Have done a batch of ficlets for my open "drabble" season (though not a single true drabble among them.) Still working on the others (and yup, it's still open, if you're interested.)

I have learned two things from this: one, my flist is inspiringly creative and also nuts (oh, the crossovers! <3 you guys) and two, I write for way too many series. Some of these characters I haven't hung out with for a while; was fun to drop by...

Gen and slash, humor and other; comment-fic, 100-800 words

SGA, One Piece, SGA/One Piece, NCIS, MUNCLE, Who/Numb3rs, Saiyuki )
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga team meal)
The [livejournal.com profile] sga_genficathon author reveals have been posted! Lots of great stories, and the bonus round is now open for more - go check it out!

My story was (as pretty much everyone guessed, gee I wonder why... ;):

SGA: The ATA Affair (or read it on AOOO) {~26,000 words}
PG-13; gen, Team; AU
Two of the S.G.C.'s top secret agents, Teyla Emmagan and Rodney McKay, are sent to the Casino Atlantis to investigate the suspicious business dealings of one John Sheppard...

It was written for the AU genre, and as you might be able to surmise from the title and summary, it was a wee bit influenced by my shiny new Man from UNCLE infatuation. It's also my longest completed SGA story, and rather indulges in my Rodney & Teyla friendship kink. What can I say; they make awesome partners. Teyla's level-headed patience and stone-cold coolness play off Rodney's brilliance and panic attacks perfectly.

In addition to MUNCLE, there's a few other crossover nods in the story, solely because I'm easily amused. Knowledge of any of the other series is unimportant to the actual plot, but since folks were asking, here's the complete list of crossovers, not counting SGA and SG-1:

The author reveals for [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa have been posted - go, read, enjoy! There's tons of great stories there, I'm still working through them. I definitely recommend "my" story, Mended by [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon, featuring sleep-deprivation and lovely Rodney-comfort. Yays!

While I'm at it:
[livejournal.com profile] aesc's Faith Healing is a cool AU with Ancient tech and the Trust and Rodney & John coming together.
[livejournal.com profile] argosy's Five Stories Jeannie Miller Tells is angst-with-a-happy-ending.
[livejournal.com profile] leupagus's Happy Tails To You is the kind of really silly crack SGA fandom excels at (it particularly got to me because it was posted only two hours after [livejournal.com profile] gnine and I happened to be musing about what John & Rodney would do with prehensile tails...)
And [livejournal.com profile] lillyjk's My Other Car's a Puddlescooter has a puddlescooter, which has to be one of the cutest names for a vehicle.

And there's my own fic:

SGA: Out in the Open {~22,000 words}
PG-13, McShep + Team gen, set after 5x14: "The Prodigal"
It's Situation Normal for the team when they're caught in an avalanche, but digging themselves out uncovers more than they counted on.

While this is technically a John/Rodney fic, it's really much more of a team action story with a sprinkle of McShep for flavoring. It was meant to be more McShep-focused, but then, there's plenty of McShep out there, and not nearly as much Teyla kicking ass and taking names. So, here's Teyla! And Ronon, too, dealing with their idiot teammates as best they can. ...Oh, yeah, and it starts with an avalanche on a snowy mountainside. Because, y'know, I'm contractually obligated to write one such story in every fandom I'm in (or more like when I flail for ideas, that's always one of the first to pop up...)
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga mcshep pier 2)
I should be working on holiday cards, but there's a Cold Outside SGA fic-fest going on, for which I dunked John in a river. Yeah, again. It's December, what do you want out of me?

And [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa is live, with a ton of great stories in all genres (mine own will be revealed come January.) Meanwhile I've had a chance to check out a few (these mostly happen to be McShep, though there's plenty of other pairings and gen to choose from):

Stargazing - Wow. Gorgeous AU scifi, beautiful romance in only a few thousand words. One of those stories you wish were a novel, so you could give it to your friends to read and gush about.

The Bumblebee Myth - another AU, this one proving the old adage: no one does CRACK the way SGA fandom does CRACK. They're all insects (plus one arachnid). Frighteningly adorable insects. Having hijinx! and gender identity crises! at a university! Put it this way, John is a walking stick who wants to fly. Yeah, this is why I might never leave SGA fandom - where else am I going to get a fix like this?

Broadcast Signal - Rodney is imprisoned and his team's supposedly killed, but Sheppard is an awfully lively hallucination for a dead guy. Fun bit of scifi, just enough angst for spice.

Shrapnel in his Skin - (Rodney/Ronon and Rodney/John) On the other hand, if you're looking for major angst, look no further. Ow. Not totally depressing, but dark.

The Daniel and Rodney Snark Fest of Pornographic Doom - Bwahah! Mostly worth it for the Woolsey/Desk. C'mon, you know it's really disturbing and potentially mentally scarring canon!
xparrot: Chopper reading (Default)
The 9 AM is my bedtime, you see. (oops?) And the unedited is because I don't really want to think about this again, so I'm just putting it up raw, as is...I might read it over for typos later, but I might not. This isn't a real story, it's just something I had to get out of my system. Which I'm posting publicly because I have no shame, also, 9 AM (9:30 now!)

Umm. So I'm an OTPer, and very, very sensitive. Which means I really shouldn't have read [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper's recent flashfic, but I did anyway, because I'm also a masochist of the sort who always has to poke a bruise to make sure it still hurts (ow!)

So this is an entirely unauthorized sequel to her story. It's not what she meant her story to be, not by a long shot. Among other things, I pretty much totally sidestep the central threesome of her fic in favor of John and Rodney. It's a fix-it for a fic that isn't supposed to be fixed, that's not intended to be broken.

This story not actually McShep; it's not about destroying what she wrote. But it is changing things, making the chars go my way instead of hers. This still isn't a future I want to see, this is not how I want it to go. And yet I couldn't let it go. So. This. With all my sincere apologies to [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper, because it's not her fault I'm an oversensitive OTPing lunatic. Also to [livejournal.com profile] gnine and [livejournal.com profile] naye (please don't kill me tomorrow? Or today rather?)

nor let it be fearful
PG-13 for language, ~3,400 words
a fic response to Peace I Leave With You by Sholio/Friendshipper

Read it on AO3
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga hc)
The [livejournal.com profile] sgahcchallenges 2008 Fic Exchange is go! I got a Rodney h/c prompt (yum!) that included "steampunk". Which. Well. I thought I knew what I was doing. Perhaps not so much? Please note: Some AUs are painstakingly crafted, every element lovingly researched. This is not one of the those AUs. (Sekkrit message to Mom: do not let Dad read this one. It doesn't have any slash, but I fear the historical inaccuracies would be even rougher on him.) It is intended to be a romp, with h/c, and I hope on those two criteria it scores.

SGA: Blue Colorado Skies {~11,400 words}
PG, AU, h/c, team
Rodney had guessed John Smith would be trouble the day he rode into town and tramped into his shop, yellow with dust and stinking of horse and sweat, and asked if he was McKay. Rodney had looked at the man's worn boots, his shabby black Stetson, and the Colt holstered at his side, and known no good could come of this.

Also, yes, I am anal. Just got the HDTV version of "First Contact", and had to check on a couple crucial (non-spoilery) details:

For the curious, everybody's favorite male gate tech Chuck was reading The Martian General's Daughter. Can't tell if John's still got War & Peace or something else, though.

I know y'all were dying to know this!
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga mcshep pier 2)
Because [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808 is teh awesome, she recorded a podfic for my latest fic, "Unaccepted". Really worth a listen, if that's your sort of thing - the story's very dialogue-heavy and she does an utterly fantastic job with the voices, angst and all. I love how she reads Rodney especially, and she makes Keller sound so cute!

Podfic: "Unaccepted", read by Jadesfire
tag to "The Shrine", Teyla/Kanaan & John/Rodney implications

And the delightful [livejournal.com profile] danceswithgary posted a DVD commentary for my Smallville futurefic "This Mortal Coil" - of my Clex fics, this is one of the ones I'm fondest of, so her take on it was wonderful to read - thank you!
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga mcshep pier)
Before I alienate my entire flist - I promise I'm shutting up about Keller now. Really! ...at least until she's in more episodes. But otherwise, not a peep more out of me on that matter. Pinky swear!

[livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic's current comfort challenge is way overextended; I figured why not take advantage. I've really been craving gen team tags to "The Shrine". This is...umm, well, I almost managed one. It's hard, yo. I'll argue that it's about as honestly gen as the episode itself is, which is, um, not very? Also, yes, I'm on a Teyla & Rodney kick right now, don't ask, I don't know. (Also I've got some damn cold or other, so might be more incoherent than I realize, apologies if so. Now, off to bed, work tomorrow. Stupid work.)

SGA: Unaccepted {~5,300 words}
PG, tag to 5x06 "The Shrine". Teyla/Kanaan, potentially John/Rodney
Sometime it's frightening to Teyla, how easily these people from Earth face down nightmares and conquer them.
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga mcshep pier 2)
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] urania_2006, there's now a podfic of my McShep flashfic "Speech Deprived," the one where Rodney loses his voice, and John's not as happy as might be expected - check it out here! And be sure to mention to [livejournal.com profile] urania_2006 that she is awesome.

And the lovely [livejournal.com profile] hils did a DVD commentary for my little Smallville dark-fic "Promises to Keep" - nifty, and terribly flattering, thank you! (Anyone else find it odd that we call them DVD commentaries, with no discs in sight? ...No? Carry on, then!)

On season 3 of Traders - the show's getting dark(er) - that's the problem with these kinds of dramas, they always have to keep pushing the envelope, do increasingly worse things to the chars, or have the chars do increasingly worse things, to keep the stories interesting. This is why I tend to fan more avidly on the status quo shows - no, there's not a lot of character development in SGA, but they started out pretty good guys, and they've stayed that way (give or take the occasional and soon-forgotten moral hiccup), and I like it like that. Though the unspooling dramas do have their train-wreck appeal. ...Also I am getting the urge to do a pic-spam of all the Grant hugs. Because there are a lot of them, and where else are you going to get a younger DH glomping people, and guys stroking his hair? (Stroking his hair! So jealous!)
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga atlantis)
I told [livejournal.com profile] naye to give me something squee-y to do, and she said there's always the Whaleverse. Which there is! So! A ficlet for [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper and [livejournal.com profile] naye's marvelously cracktastic SGA magic AU, "A Clear and Different Light". It's a bit of sweet silliness set after the main story (and thus will make about zero sense if you aren't familiar with the original.) Featuring Teyla & Rodney, because their childhood friendship is one of my favorite parts of the 'verse - favorite non-crack parts, anyway.

SGA: Inscribed (~1,600 words)
G, gen friendship fluff
Every couple months, Teyla needs to refresh Rodney's runes.

In related news, the quest for David Hewlett has lead us to the Canadian drama Traders; we've now seen the first season and a bit more. Very enjoyable. I've never watched a show in which more often than not I have no idea what the characters are talking about, but it doesn't matter if you understand the stock exchange, because the scripts are very clever about making sure you can follow the emotional action even if the high finance gambits and pitfalls are completely baffling. The characters are interesting and appealing, they all can be bastards, yet they've all got enough humanity to keep them sympathetic. Sally Ross intrigues me because she's pretty much exactly what they wanted Elizabeth Weir to be, cool and capable even when she's out of her depth, and smart enough to use her inexperience and seeming naivete to her advantage. (Which would make Jack Larkin Sheppard, obviously, but McKay is an unholy combo of Marty and Grant, and then the fusion implodes messily...) Not a show to fan on, but much fun to watch; I'm looking forward to more.

(And the pertinent question is not only, "David Hewlett, how are you so awesome?" but also, "David Hewlett, how are you so adorable when you're pretending to be brain-damaged?" Between Grant Jansky and parts of "The Shrine," he's going to give me a complex.)
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga mcshep)
(Why didn't anyone tell me that Newsies is one of the deliciously slashiest movies ever put on film? Really now, I feel the fangirl collective has failed me in not bringing this to my attention sooner. Turn-of-the-century street urchins in love, can you get more adorable? (Well, yes, you could also subscribe to [livejournal.com profile] chandri's McShep fusion idea. Which so needs to happen, because, seriously. The cowboy and the "mouth with a brain". It's almost too perfect!))

Finally managed something chipper! For [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic's comfort challenge, a quick & dirty silly "Whispers" tag. Follow the link to fluffy slash, hardly a smidge of genuine angst, just beer.

SGA: Horror Movie Blues {~1,500 words}
PG-13, McShep, tag to 5x07: "Whispers
Post-mission, John's a bit freaked out, but Rodney's there for him.
xparrot: Chopper reading (Default)
Firstly - McShep HappyFic Challenge! I've been waiting for something like this to pop up, since we all need it now. Since I not-so-secretly love unmitigated and absurdly happy endings even more than I love angst, I am all over this one (...whether or not I'll be able to write something for it is another matter, but we'll see...) It's very open-ended, so go! Sign up! Be happy!

Then, changing gears so fast that I apologize for the whiplash, a new fic:

This is...okay, I don't like the McKay/Keller pairing. My reasons range from my fairly levelheaded disinterest in seeing any romance in the show, to the increasingly emotional and irrational. But I don't want to take out that dislike on Keller, not when we have so little show left to enjoy; I don't especially like the char as she's been written anyway, but I'm trying. So really, this is less an actual fic and more me working to come to terms with the pairing, such as it is. Such as I see it, so I can move on and see Jennifer in her own right. Any McKeller OTPers will probably want to give this one a pass, for your own good.

(And next I will return you to your regularly scheduled Rodney/TEAM/McShep squee, before [livejournal.com profile] gnine has my head for straying!)

SGA: Breaking Up in Three Easy Clichés {~3,300 words}
PG, McKay/Keller, spoilers for "The Last Man" and "The Shrine"

Read it on AO3
xparrot: Chopper reading (Default)
This isn't quite what I want to read, because what I want to read is a 40,000+ word novelization of "The Shrine" that explores everything we didn't see of every day, and all we missed afterwards, too. But I don't have the time or energy to do that myself, so here's a few missing moments, because we didn't get as much Zelenka as we were supposed to, and that's tragic.

SGA: All the Myriad Faces {~3,500 words}
PG, gen angst; tag to 5x06 "The Shrine"
"It's not that Radek is afraid of the infirmary, but he doesn't have much reason to come."

Pern podfic

The absolutely fabulous [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808 recorded a podfic for my SGA/Pern fusion of doom, "On the Wings of Imagination" - my first podfic! And it's a delight to listen to, she's got a fantastic voice (okay, I'm biased, I don't listen to many podfic/books-on-tape, but when I do I prefer to be read to in lovely British accents. And she makes my silly story sound so professional and awesome and Rodney's sarcasm is perfect!)

Download it here or at Jadesfire's lj here (complete with outtake that makes me blush like a blushy thing)

(And be sure to mention to [livejournal.com profile] jadesfire2808 that she's fabulous!)

I [livejournal.com profile] mcsmooched. Been wanting to write sleep-deprived!Rodney for a while, and then needed to write something to deal with today's blow, else I feared I'd be blocked, also had [livejournal.com profile] gnine and [livejournal.com profile] naye to cheer up, and so:

Only a Day Away {935 words}
G; McShep, sappy sappity sap; spoilerish though 5x05

Also:
Spontaneous love meme! Because we all can use it today. Me included.

...

*twitch twitch* Nothing like going to the bathroom to remind you there are worse things than your favorite show getting canceled out from under you. Like sitting down on the toilet with your pants down and looking over and seeing a cockroach on the doorframe one foot away. Eeyeergghhhh no no no no (I do hope our roach spray isn't overly dangerous to humans. I've been trying to use it with proper ventilation, but. It's hard to read the warnings on the canister, there's too many kanji...)
xparrot: Chopper reading (Default)
So, I rather loved "Broken Ties," and wanted to explore it a little further. And yes, there needs to be more Ronon and Rodney stories. And Ronon angst, apparently. This is my first time with Ronon's POV; he proved rather startlingly introspective.

SGA: Know Thyself for What Thou Art {~3,400 words}
PG; gen, angst; tag to 5x03 "Broken Ties"
Ronon knows guilt. What he doesn't know--what he didn't know, before this--is shame.

[livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix went live today! My own remix assignment was [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper, which was hard, because I love her stories, but they're so complete in themselves that I couldn't think of anything more to bring to them without going into epic retellings. So, after much dithering, I cheated and remixed "Safe Harbor", because I always wished it were longer, and the world needs more Rodney & Ronon h/c...

SGA: Any Port in a Storm (the Cold Winds, Hot Air remix) {~5,200 words}
PG-13; gen, h/c; remix of [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper's Safe Harbor
Rodney & Ronon in a blizzard.

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] seleneheart remixed my "Kuro to Ao" into dystopian AU McShep in "M Is for Monster" (this amuses me all the more because "Kuro to Ao" is a remix itself, being a fairytale retelling...)
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga mcshep)
So [livejournal.com profile] gnine and I watched a few more David Hewlett things, and spent most of them squeeing softly about how awesome and gorgeous he is, which points I then distilled into this bit of fic - because our little crush on DH is nothing compared to how John pines after Rodney. Most of the observations were specifically inspired - like, his giant, giant eyes in Elevated, and a particular moment of Century Hotel, and his angsty awesomeness in Treed Murray (which is actually quite a decent movie...I think, though I can't really objectively judge because of the aforementioned squeeing, and how I am biased to find all of DH's characters more sympathetic than perhaps they're intended to be.)

Anyhoo - fic for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic's 5 Things challenge:

SGA: Five Things John Can't Help But Notice {600 words (5 drabbles + one for the road)}
PG, McShep
Nothing would give John away faster...
xparrot: Chopper reading (sga mcshep side by side)
(haven't seen Who yet. Download faster dagnabbit! *kicks wireless*)

Snuck in another [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic just under the wire. This one begun more or less to [livejournal.com profile] gnine's order:

G: Gimme Rodney-hurt!
X: But everything that you could do to him already has been written.
G: Mmm, yeah *happy sigh* *goes off to reread [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper's snowfic, comes back half an hour later* What about strangling? I haven't read much strangling!
X: ...You realize I've already written mouth-to-mouth in my last two fics.
G: This is a problem how?

SGA: Speech Deprived {~5,300 words}
PG, McShep, fluffy h/c
Rodney was released from the infirmary with painkillers, icepacks, and a strict injunction to limit all unnecessary speech for at least three days.
