xparrot: Chopper reading (sga hc)

The [livejournal.com profile] sgahcchallenges 2008 Fic Exchange is go! I got a Rodney h/c prompt (yum!) that included "steampunk". Which. Well. I thought I knew what I was doing. Perhaps not so much? Please note: Some AUs are painstakingly crafted, every element lovingly researched. This is not one of the those AUs. (Sekkrit message to Mom: do not let Dad read this one. It doesn't have any slash, but I fear the historical inaccuracies would be even rougher on him.) It is intended to be a romp, with h/c, and I hope on those two criteria it scores.

SGA: Blue Colorado Skies {~11,400 words}
PG, AU, h/c, team
Rodney had guessed John Smith would be trouble the day he rode into town and tramped into his shop, yellow with dust and stinking of horse and sweat, and asked if he was McKay. Rodney had looked at the man's worn boots, his shabby black Stetson, and the Colt holstered at his side, and known no good could come of this.

Also, yes, I am anal. Just got the HDTV version of "First Contact", and had to check on a couple crucial (non-spoilery) details:

For the curious, everybody's favorite male gate tech Chuck was reading The Martian General's Daughter. Can't tell if John's still got War & Peace or something else, though.

I know y'all were dying to know this!

Judging by the cover and size of his War and Peace in Home, I'm saying it was. XD

*goes off to read Blue Colorado Skies*

Hmmm...could be the same book, but we see the opposite cover, so it's hard to say for certain...(they need to show us these things more clearly!)

Thanks for the Chuck info! I knew the last word was "Daughter", but was stumped on the rest.

Yeah, I couldn't make it out at all in the regular ep, but the high-quality version was easy to read ^^

I was, in fact, dying to know. We need all the Chuck background info we can get! :) Thanks!

Yup! (someone said Dusty in "Whispers" was reading the same book? maybe it's from the lending library!)

Huh! That is... wonderfully random. :D Seriously, I thought I saw a whale's tail on the cover so I was trying to piece it together from that. I can see where I got it from the Amazon cover pic, but boy was I heading in a wrong direction. Thanks for doing the research! :D

Luckily in the high-quality version of the ep the title is easy to read - I was really curious! XD

This is a seriously awesome AU. Western AND steam-punk? DOES IT EVEN GET ANY BETTER?

Rodney's dirigible and mechanical hand! His awesome inventors' firm with Radek! Ronon the bounty hunter! Kolya!

Also, very well written. I enjoyed reading it. Greatly.

Hee, so glad you enjoyed it! I had much fun with it - never did steampunk or Westerns before, but there is so much potential for outrageousness, and everyone fits surprisingly well...

Heeee, thank you! I'm always especially touched to know a story of mine is memorable enough to remember and reread (and this one was so much *fun* to write! ^_^)
