sgahcchallenges 2008 Fic Exchange is go! I got a Rodney h/c prompt (yum!) that included "steampunk". Which. Well. I thought I knew what I was doing. Perhaps not so much? Please note: Some AUs are painstakingly crafted, every element lovingly researched. This is not one of the those AUs. (Sekkrit message to Mom: do not let Dad read this one. It doesn't have any slash, but I fear the historical inaccuracies would be even rougher on him.) It is intended to be a romp, with h/c, and I hope on those two criteria it scores.

Rodney had guessed John Smith would be trouble the day he rode into town and tramped into his shop, yellow with dust and stinking of horse and sweat, and asked if he was McKay. Rodney had looked at the man's worn boots, his shabby black Stetson, and the Colt holstered at his side, and known no good could come of this.

For the curious, everybody's favorite male gate tech Chuck was reading The Martian General's Daughter. Can't tell if John's still got War & Peace or something else, though.
