xparrot: Chopper reading (books)
[personal profile] xparrot
Trying to join up with mainstream Supernatural fandom is weird for me. Usually at this point in fanning I'd be devouring fic, and/or writing my own. And it's not like there isn't a ton of SPN fic out there - it's the largest single fandom on AO3. But finding what I want to read is difficult...not least of which because I'm not quite sure what I want to read. For all its flaws, SPN is almost a Type A fandom for me in that it gives me pretty much everything I want to see. (Along with plenty I'd rather not see at all, however...)

The other problem with the fic is that I'm out of step with a large part of the fandom - and particularly with the Dean-fan side of the fandom. I adore Sam, I really do (especially the character he's become - he's developed quite a lot over the seasons, more than Dean, in compelling ways. And Jared Padalecki is made of adorable and has gotten a lot better as an actor.) But while Gnine is a Sam-fan, Dean was always my favorite and apparently always will be. Even if I spend large chunks of the show wanting him smacked...that's part of his charm. I do love the assholes. And that always puts me in an odd place in a character-fandom, as I'm often inclined to side against my favorite - I'll take Sam's side over Dean, or Thor's side over Loki. This doesn't seem like a contradiction to me, because it's still all about my favorite, just from another angle...

But more than that, I don't fit with the Dean-fan side because I'm not, as it turns out, a Destiel shipper. Which is weird because I love Castiel, he's why I originally kept watching the show as long as I did, and rewatching it now, when it comes down to it he might be my favorite character. And I love his relationship with the Winchesters, and the special connection he has with Dean - I love every moment that the Destiel shippers love. When we started rewatching I thought I could get into it. Except that in the context of the whole series, those moments largely don't play as shippy to me, and less so as the show goes on. In the earlier seasons there was an arguably erotic edge to the obsessive depth of their relationship, and I think an argument could be made for queerbaiting (whether accidental or deliberate.) But ever since Dean declared Cas to be family, it changed the nature of their connection.

With most characters, a relationship this intense, that the characters are this committed to, would be easy to read as romantic, however they were labeling it. But Dean Winchester being obsessively, unheathily, absolutely devoted to his family is his core character trait. And I've never seen that devotion as romantic/erotic; I've never been into the Wincest. (Among other things, the Winchesters' sibling relationship has enough in common with how I am with my own sibs that any suggestion of incest makes me uncomfortable). So the way he is with Cas now, wanting to save him against all odds or reason, seems less like Dean's in love and more like Dean loving his family the only way he knows how.

Castiel's side is less clear-cut - Cas being in love with Dean is pretty easy to take as canon, though what being in love means to an angel is uncertain. Even putting aside the physical desires of their vessels, it seems like angels themselves aren't actually asexual (since Naomi/Crowley was a thing). It does irritate me that the writers pushed Cas towards heterosexuality when they could've as easily shown him as attracted to anyone (especially given how unfazed angels are by changing the gender of their vessels; they could've explored this more with Hannah's second vessel especially.) But I mostly wish he'd been left asexual. And I also don't want Cas & Dean's relationship to take that much precedence over Cas & Sam's relationship, which has had some really sweet stuff in the last few seasons.

Of course I don't mind that Dean/Castiel is a thing - more power to the shippers, set your slash-goggles to highest res! But I don't think that's where the show is going or even pretending to go, and I don't really want it to; I'm happy with them being best friends/found family. And I'm not interested in pairing fic, which limits my fic options.

So, any recs for gen SPN fic?

You want gen SPN fic? Hahahahaha! (But if you find any, post a rec in your journal!)

I glanced through my bookmarks, and about the only thing that sort of fits is Forgotten by NorthernSparrow. It's got that "found family" angle and no pairings. I do think it's not everyone's cup of tea, but hey. It's a gen fic in this fandom...!

I do have a few of Destiel fic bookmarked which are interesting if you don't mind but don't ship the pairing because they've got other things going for them.
It's funny that you say you love the characters as a found family in canon, because that is how I prefer it too! I've never wanted to see the romantic angle explicitly on the show (although I do enjoy some subtext) And yet I consumed Destiel fic by the boatload. I'm a total Dean girl, and like you will often appreciate Sam's side of the argument which doesn't change my all-encompassing love for Dean one bit. :)

Heeeh, yeah, finding gen fic is a challenge in any fandom, but this one in particular it seems...!

Hmmm that fic looks interesting but I have to ask, does it have a happy ending? (...I'm a wuss, and especially with a story that long I don't want to end up all mopey!)

Oh, yes, I've definitely been there, having a ship I love to read but don't care if it's canonical. And I do love the Dean/Cas subtext...though yeah, most of it reads platonic to me (I am as ever the worst slash fangirl.) If you have any Destiel recs that are light on the romance and have a strong Team-Free-Will bent, I'd be curious? My biggest issue is that even if I can see the Dean/Cas, it can't ever be an OTP for me, it can't be Dean's most important relationship, not when Dean has Sam (and I don't want Dean without Sam!)(actually one of the reasons I love Cas is how he loves both of the boys, and doesn't get jealous or find anything questionable in how devoted they are to one another. I love Cas's sad looks whenever Sam and Dean are at odds, and how supportive he is helping either brother help the other...)

Yes; I don't really like sad endings myself. :-)

I had a lot of fun reading these, they are Destiel but they have a good ensemble. I should have asked how you feel about AUs in this fandom, because that's what these are:

It's the End of the World as We Know it (and I Feel Fine)
A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy AU/Fusion. I just love the style because I love the original books.

No One Would Riot For Less
This is a 6x22 fix it. I found it really interesting and the use of Dean/Cas is effective in this case. It happens to have Sam/Gabriel paring, which is a pairing I loathe but I could ignore the shippy bits and still enjoy the story.

If I think of anything else that's not Dean/Cas focused I'll add it. If you run into anything team-focused in your exploits of this fandom, do post it. :)

Thanks, looking forward to checking them out!

As far as AUs go, I'm fine with canon-AUs, and fusions like HGTTG would probably work for me, too. I just know I'm not interested in any real-world AUs - Cas's alien angelic nature is one of my favorite parts of his characters, and the Winchesters are so incredibly screwed up by their life that as regular people they'd either be adjusted (and thus unrecognizable) or disturbingly dysfunctional (while as in the context of the show, they're generally doing the best they can...)

My favourite gen supernatural fic is Strange's Country (http://concernedlily.livejournal.com/33291.html) which is kind of a fusion with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. It's about Sam trying to figure out how to save Dean from hell.

You can see the other gen supernatural fics I've enjoyed here on my pinboard (https://pinboard.in/u:sophia_sol/t:-supernatural/t:$gen/) if you want

Hmm, I don't really know Jonathan Strange (it's on my to-read list) but might check it out anyway. (Also, that version is locked, so you might want to link the AO3 copy: http://archiveofourown.org/works/190703 ) And thanks for the other links!

I've been watching SPN faithfully since S1....and have felt out of step with fandom pretty much since S1. It's hard being a gen fan (which I mostly am) or a easily pleased multi-shipper (I enjoyed both the Wincest angst 2 weeks ago and the Destiel angst this past week) because there's no fan space for the generally contented viewer.

I would love a discussion thread for episodes but the last one I remember crashed under the weight of ship wank c. 2010...

I'm a gen fan with SP - but an old-school gen fan, I'm in it 100% for the angst and smarm and h/c and intense character relationships. I absolutely love all the moments that Wincest and Destiel shippers love (and Sam/Cas shippers, too), they just read as beautiful family love to me.

I started watching midway through s1, finally dropped it in s7 - but I'm glad I came back to it now, because it's had a lot of great stuff, and I'm loving this season (I'd say that s1, s8 and s11 thus far are my favorites of the show). And yeah, I'd like a discussion thread! but I'd mostly just be there to say AWWWW THEY LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH :D :D :D (with a bit of OH DEAN. And AW SAMMY. And OH COME ON NOW CAS!!!)(but serious wasn't "Red Meat" amazing? and then Dean saying "Castiel" in the last ep, I love it when he uses the full name - just, oh, show! When you're pushing my buttons, you're pushing them like nobody's business...)

Just for you, I went back through my dusty tag list and dug up my podfic recs list. They're waaaaaay old (2009!) but that might mean you haven't come across them yet. My personal favourite of these is Easy as Pie, although Accidents Will Happen is pretty awesome too. I'm not up to date yet, so haven't gone digging for more, but it looks like folks are still posting to [livejournal.com profile] spn_gen, so that could be a good source. They have a pretty common-sense definitely of Gen that I like, so you may find good stuff there.

*cough* I wrote a few myself, although it's been a while.*cough* :)

Things definitely shifted in the fandom with the arrival of Castiel - up to then, the options were Wincest, Gen or 'random guest star', so it felt like there was a pretty even split in the fic. Now, I'd assume Gen has been sidelined as usual, so maybe going back a bit might give you some good stuff, even if it doesn't have Cas in it. I'm holding off diving back in, as I need time IRL at the moment, and I know once I start SPN again, I won't be able to stop! But the more you post, the more tempted I am...

ETA: It would help if I actually linked to my post!

Thanks for the links, I'm looking forward to checking them out! Right now I'm mostly poking cautiously, trying to figure out what I'm actually looking for...I do love Cas, but then I also love the boys being brothers, so the earlier season fic might work better than usual. And while I usually don't seek out comedic fic, this show is so freaking angsty that might be what I really want...

(Um, I found you by going through my old Smallville memories as I'm clearing out the fandoms I'm no longer in, so random drop-in here.)

But thank you for finally describing why I could rarely see Dean/Castiel as a mutual relationship.
