Super-intelligence has actually always been something the character is supposed to have ... I say "supposed to" because it's usually more a case of the writer telling us that he does, since he doesn't generally act brighter than the average 20-watt bulb.
Which just gave me the most hilarious thought -- if kryptonite takes away his powers (not sure if it entirely works that way in SV as it does in comics canon), and super-intelligence is one of his powers, then kryptonite would also make him STUPID! And it just stands to reason that the more time he spends in proximity to it, the dumber he'd get ... sort of like the superhero equivalent of lead poisoning.
