6 months?!
Jul. 2nd, 2007 02:26 amWe have to wait six months?!?
New Who 3x13, "Last of the Time Lords." I love this show. I love love love this show. I love that it's not afraid to do AN-Y-THING. I love that the star was an absurd CGI thing in a cage for a goodly long while. I love that they did the incredibly stupid 'find the 4 vials' and then it was the awesomest of red herrings. I love that the Doctor rode the psychic waves of focused human will in the most corniest way and it was just LOL-ridiculous and idiotic-looking and beautiful.
"I forgive you" and the Doctor thinking for a moment he might have found his crazily unlikely and impossible happily ever after, and then the Doctor holding the Master's body as he breaks and wow. Wow. I have always loved hero/nemesis but this. This. This is. Just. This.
The music. O M Freakin' G. Shattered me. Soundtrack now. Please? Thanks!
Martha was amazing and fantastic and she does the Right Thing on every level, for herself and for her family, for the world and for the Doctor. And she's not gone but she's continuing her relationship with the Doctor on her terms, yay for her. Go off and find your pediatrician fellow-world-saver, Martha, you deserve him, and after getting laser-screwdrivered like that I'd say he deserves you.
Jack. Oh, Jack. Insane. The writers, I mean. They're all insane and they do the silliest things and I love it. Looking forward to Torchwood s2 and where that might go with Jack's fully realized loyalty to his oddball little team (especially if Martha guest-stars as rumor has it.) (where was Torchwood for the year, anyway? Were they found? Executed? In front of Jack, just for fun? Y'think?)
gnine called the Toclafane as being from Utopia. She also was the one to point out the Master's contingency plan. Because, Lucy Saxon with the gun? Totally hypnotized. So it was the Master's escape route, and getting the Doctor at the same time, and now he's probably in Lucy via ring, and have I mentioned I love the Master?
(Speaking of Master-love, I think I'm in love with John Simm. In the Confidentials he is so self-effacing and quiet and utterly the opposite of everything the Master is and it tickles me pink. Shame he's probably gone for good even if the Master isn't, but it was worth every insane minute.)
Very curious about next season, about what new companion he'll have. I want a guy. Or an older woman - something different. The young spunky girls, they do them marvelously, but I'd like to see something new.
But either way, any way - we get another season with the Tenth Doctor. <33333 The Doctor with his heart broken three times over, the Master and then Jack and then Martha, but he's stronger now than he was at the season's start, never totally whole but more healed than he's been since the Time War ended (Martha's earned her own title, even if she hasn't officially been granted her MD - she made the Doctor better.) And as
naye says, the TARDIS always takes good care of her Doctor, keeps him on his toes. "What? What!? What?"
So now I have to put this show out of my mind for the next six months, because otherwise I'll flip out from the waiting. It's got...something. I don't know. I can't in all honesty say it's the best show I've ever seen, it's got its share of flaws. But there's a magic to it--maybe it's just the condensed will of so many fans creating it together. There's a secret chord that most of my favorite shows hit at times, and Doctor Who vibrates to it almost constantly.
Can't wait for Christmas!

Date: 2007-07-01 05:42 pm (UTC)There was a quick line the Master said about sending them on a wild goose chase in the Himalayas. Oh man, if they truly follow up on Jack's new attitude towards his team, this could mean great things for TW next year. I'm looking forward to it!! Gah, I hope the rumors about Martha are true!! (And totally not for my selfish Jack/Martha reasons! Not at all!! >_>)
I am still reeling from this episode. I can't form all of my thoughts into coherency quite yet. But "I love that it's not afraid to do AN-Y-THING." TOTALLY sums most of it up, because this episode took so many crazy risks. And you're never going to pull off something amazing if you don't take risks.
The wait is going to keeeeell me, but... Titanic? Does that mean Nine will be there??? (He totally won't, but IT WOULD BE SO COOL)

Date: 2007-07-01 06:03 pm (UTC)Yes! They took risks and maybe a few of them fell a little short, but in the end they were worth it, absolutely!
Nine never was on the Titanic, I don't think, didn't he talk that family off before it set sail? But I wonder if the Doctor might make a reference...waaaaah don't wanna wait 6 months to find out!!

Date: 2007-07-01 06:18 pm (UTC)Go J-chan, by the way, for calling Utopia! And Lucy!
And about companion - I think I've decided I want the Doctor to find someone more broken than him, that he can fix. Either that, or two people (team worry!), or someone not from Earth... I really don't mind the companion being a girl, because I know they're always going to have to balance out the fan service that is David Tennant, and so we're not going to get away from young girls. But someone older! Or a guy! Or both!
And Jack is going to get back together with the Doctor, right? I mean, I have this big idea for how Torchwood and DW could cross over with Time Agents and stuff, and Jack could reprise sort of what he did now, but - yes. Jack is going to see his Doctor again, right? Right?
Oh, and someone'd better write the Jack-angst from seeing his Torchwood friends get killed in front of him... I am AN EVIL PERSON. Really, I am. But they're all fine now, and there just wasn't enough Jack angst in this episode... ...evil?

Date: 2007-07-01 06:22 pm (UTC)Oh man, after we watched it, my friends and I went down to a pub (a genuine pub! XD) to digest the whole thing and it was just. Oh man. The whole damn thing made me so incredibly happy in so many ways. (I, uh, also. Kind of. I think I want Doctor/Master AU in the whole vein of "I'mma take care of you till you're better K?" that we almost got but didn't quite. ... I'm going to miss John Simms, booooo.)
The "I forgive you" line was so incredibly -- AUGH IT MADE ME HAPPY IN THE HAPPY WAY. :D
... also, you know? Nine was aboard the Titanic, or at least ONE of the previous incarnations was. I know RTD said he didn't intend on bringing any of the older Doctors back, but, you know. It's a possibility and I think having Nine and Ten bounce off each other would be high-lair-ee-ous.
:D

Date: 2007-07-01 06:23 pm (UTC)Man, I think I just want some Martha/Jack on TW because I had built myself up to hoping for it and then there... wasn't any. I mean, they were in kind of a dire situation (hello, understatement of the year XD) so, not a lot of time for it. But you know TW would probably go there... XD Jack/Anyone is OTP. (Augh.. have you seen the pictures on John Barrowman's website of him kissing a muppet? THE MAN HAS CHEMISTRY WITH EVERYTHING. It is frightening XD)
I thought I remembered him telling Jabe (was that her name? The tree woman?) about being on the actual Titanic? Though, I could very well be remembering wrong. Even a reference to Nine would make me happy ♥
...is it Christmas yet? XD

Date: 2007-07-01 06:32 pm (UTC)Awww, the Doctor healing a Companion, that would be awfully sweet. (and a happy ending for him, maybe, because it would be a triumph when they walked away, able to stand on their own because of him, rather than the Doctor getting abandoned again...)(I don't blame Martha at all, she made just the right decision for her...but still, oh, Doctor!)
Two companions! team worry! squee! And Jack coming back, too, oh, I hope so...I don't know if TW & DW will crossover that much, but it would be awful fun...
(and the ep did need more Jack-angst, I'm telling you, that's the only thing that genuinely disappointed me...!)

Date: 2007-07-01 06:33 pm (UTC)I don't tend to self pimp much... but I was wondering. Erm... I wrote this fic and, if you would like to I would be very honoured if you'd cast a glance at it. It's kinda-sorta post LotTL (written before not not utterly jossed so, with a few changes, it still entirely works though some reactions arn't quite right, but it basically still works.) and it's a humour fic. I wouldn't link it except I am very proud of it and I think you might like it. So... if you would take a moment to read and comment I would be deeply honourd.
Here's the link http://yma2.livejournal.com/117928.html#cutid1
To go on to your post...
I think this episode definately had it's flaws (for me the whole 'floating-magic-glitter' thing would actually have been a lot more believable and buyable if it hadn't been for the floating. The psychic energy-matrix thing... yeah... yeah I got that. The glitter... OK. The youth-ify-ing... cool. Even the glowing. But... floating? No dude. Just no.
Same with the little CGI thing, that bugged a lot of fans.
But these were about the worst aspects of that ep. In general I thought it was awsome and I *LOVED* what they did with Martha. Having been in that sort of situation myself it's just so wonderful to see it done on TV. And to see a relationship where there's unrequited love which is, genuinly, unrequited love and the female is good and bold enough to just get over it! If that was the only good thing in this episode (and it wasn't) then it made it.
Also I loved how much room for fanfic this episode has. It's like RTD said, 'Right, let's give the fanfic writers and entier year free of dark stuff to do what they want with BUT it can still fit in cannon because *it didn't actually happen!* mwahwhaha!' I mean, gotta love that. I can just imagine someone writing about the burning of Japan (I thought of you when I heard that, BTW.) thruogh the Doctor or Martha's eyes. And then there's all Martha's traveling, and the Master and Doctor through that time and Jack and... yeah... so much room!
I adored how they handled the Master's death. I adored how Tennant acted it. Because he was far more openly destraugt over that than, say, Roses' dissapearence. Which I think says a lot. Not so much about Rose but about the Doctor. and yeah, I adored, loved, and fangirled the entire Doctor/Master interaction. OK... quick check, 1) During the bit where the Doctor said that he would look after the Master to make him better did you think of the ending of Trigun? With Vash carrying Knives away across the sand? Because I tottaly did. And it wuold have been, as my friend
Also 2) I think the Master would make the BEST companion. I mean... can you think of how insane the show would become! Seriously! Master for the Doctor's next companion. Shoulda happened!
I think Doctor Who is good for two reasons, and they're reasons you've pointed out. Firstly it's got a lot of love behind it. A lot of harsh critisism too, but a lot of love. It's based in this deep history and everyone who watches it, and makes it, knows that. It's got some very high standards to fulfil and it won't always manage that, but it does try. It constantly pushes for new things and new ideas whilst trying to remain faithful to the old. And it's produced and occasionally written by Russel T Davis who, IMO, may not be the best writer ever but he does LOVE this show and he has a great nack for characterisation. His plotting and theme handling may be a little weak, but his characterisation is almost always top-notch. Just see the Doctor and Master stuff for that.
But yeah, it's nice to read a positive review about this ep. Even if it's one that conceeds how silly it was at points.

Date: 2007-07-01 07:31 pm (UTC)Heeeee to John Barrowman making out with the muppet. Yeah. Scary scary amounts of chemistry. Wonderfully scary amounts!
And oh! You're right about the Titanic, at least one of the Doctors was on it before. (though is this the real Titanic? The timeline's gotten a bit flubbed, don't think it ever crashed into a time machine!)
no subject
Date: 2007-07-01 07:36 pm (UTC)The "I forgive you" was...gaaah. The Doctor is so absolutely what I want my heroes to be. He's not perfect and he makes mistakes but that...when he has to, he has the right words, exactly...
Ahhh! You're right, I totally forgot about the line about being on the Titanic! I don't think it's likely we'll see Chris Eccleston again, or any of the other Doctors (and besides, this Titanic is a bit off-course in history as well as navigationally, seeing as it was never supposed to ram a time machine) but we can hope for a mention (man though they would be funny playing off each other...!)

Date: 2007-07-01 07:52 pm (UTC)And do bear in mind, there's plenty of old Doctor Who to watch and novels to read. You Are Not Alone.

Date: 2007-07-01 08:02 pm (UTC)The floating and the CGI Doctor-ite were both unconvincing f/x, which was the biggest problem I had with them, but I can't hold it against them for trying. It's just that movies nowadays have raised the bar of f/x so high that it's hard for a TV show's budget to match. And besides, whatever qualms I had about the earlier parts of the ep were blown away by my absolute love for the ending. Martha's decision was awesome and it was so very satisfying to see it, to see someone be so sensible and mature about a relationship on TV - practically unheard of!
Heee to the burning of Japan, yep, we were most amused to be wiped off the map ^_^
The Doctor & the Master were incredible, and yes, I loved the Doctor's reaction, how very much of the Doctor really is bound up in the Master. And the Master as a Companion, even if it never could happen, would rock so very much.
One reason I'd have trouble getting into the fandom is the RTD hate I've noticed around. I can understand the old-school fans' issues, everyone's got their own personalized version of the series in their hearts and it doesn't always jive with RTD's interpretation, but...I think he's quite a great writer, myself. He gets off some wonderfully snappy lines and his characterizations are nothing short of gorgeous. And I think he does theme quite well (of course I'm biased, I love his themes of hope and despair and loneliness and togetherness and all the great and terrible potential of humanity). Plot isn't his strong point, but I've seen worse, and he's good enough at the rest to compensate - he can write character moments powerful enough to make you forget about how pointless the plot might have gotten. And if it comes to a choice between character and plot, I'll pick character every time!
And of course it was silly at points! Anyone watching Dr. Who not expecting silliness - what show are they watching? In the first episode he fights animated plastic mannequins! I'd be quite disappointed to miss out on the crack, it's one of the things that draws me to the show. They're not afraid to try anything, and that thrills me. (and from the little I've seen of the past Who, that's always been true. Robot mummies? ^^)

Date: 2007-07-01 08:32 pm (UTC)Definate agreement on the fandom. I tend to stay a fair way from it as well. I like putting down my ideas, and I like writing fanfic, but I'm not making any great effort to get massively involved because, yeah, the bitchness.
I think with a lot of RTD's eps it's best just to let yourself be carried away with the moment and not analyse. Because if you analyse you'll find problems, if you just have fun then... yeah.
And this season has been sosososo much more awsome than the last. I do hope they bring the Master back somehow. I think they must. SURELY they must... Even if it's not Simms it's... dayum, it's teh MASTER! The Master never dies! Ever!
Also; a suggestion. Why not bide away the next six months watching some Classic Doctor Who? I'm not saying it's massivly comparable to the new series but it's still good fun. I suggest The Sea Devils, which has the Master, The Doctor and strange aquatic sea... devil... things in it. You can find it on YouTube and it's not so bad. Dated, but still good vintage stuff.

Date: 2007-07-01 08:49 pm (UTC)And more love for the ending here! *waves* I mean. There was so much to take in, but it's been a couple of hours now, and I'm coming down firmly on the "love" side. ♥

And. If I'm completely honest. Yes. Me too. I am a horribly evil person, but... it was the perfect opportunity! Mrph.

Date: 2007-07-01 10:52 pm (UTC)Like the theory bout Lucy as Master's plan B. I only considered the shooting might hav been a deliberate plan this afternoon, and it would be brill it so, because I thought Lucy just killing him out of revenge of a difficult relationship was a bit naff and predictable.
I had probs with this ep in general, since I didn't think it lived up to the fantasticness of last week's, which is why I haven't made a post of my own about it yet- still assessing everything. But all your points are valid and good and remind me of the awesome parts :D Doctor broken over the Master's body was definately a highlight. Really good drama going on there :D
Anyway, just really popping over to say- glad you still like the fandom, even through its faults and its craziness. Once its gets hold of you, it doesn't let go :p

Date: 2007-07-02 03:26 am (UTC)And I'm gonna have to poll all you old-schoolers for what to try! need something to fill the void 'til X-mas! XD

Date: 2007-07-02 03:35 am (UTC)Lucy killing him just wasn't set up as anything but a Master-plan. I mean, this is the Master! He wouldn't let himself die just to spite the Doctor - the Doctor said it, that he knew the Master, and he did, and so, no. Is all a plan. (besides, if Lucy killed him out of relationship troubles then whyever would she be there to pick up the ring at the end? She's still his loyal companion, far as I can see...)
Whatever problems I had with the ep were negated by the utter fantasticness of the endings, as far as I'm concerned. Really I think they did a marvelous job - the last couple weeks' eps were so amazing that just about any conclusion would be anticlimactic - and yet, I don't think this one was, which is something. (And the one genuine problem I do have with the ep - the lack of Jack doing anything much - might be cancelled out depending on how Torchwood s2 goes...)
And yep...however crazy the fandom is, the Doctor's got me now, and I don't think I've got a chance of getting away... XD

Date: 2007-07-02 07:21 am (UTC)Because he does win. He SO does win.
I was not a big fan of Martha for most of this season, but I felt her exit made it all worth it b/c finally I got what R.T.Davies had been trying to do with her. And I realize that I actually liked it. And now I can watch this season again with greater pleasure.
And Jack? The Face of Boe thing was interesting and opens up a lot of character studying, but the revelation itself felt a little crowbarred in there.
But overall, the 3rd season bounced back for me.

Date: 2007-07-02 08:04 am (UTC)But, yeah. It would fit Torchwood better, and - oh, is it January yet??
no subject
Date: 2007-07-02 11:41 am (UTC)Though I totally do not believe he's dead. I don't think he'd let himself die even to spite the Doctor; I'm pretty convinced he hypnotized Lucy to shoot him as part of a master *ahem* escape plan. (he's been able to possess bodies before, so he might be possessing her now...)
Even if it would have been the best 4th season ever - the ultimate Odd Company, in the TARDIS ^^
We've been showing a friend s1-2, and upon rewatching, I actually think 3rd season is the show's strongest season. First season was awesome but still ironing out some kinks, and while in s2 I loved Ten & Rose, I think 3rd season is more exciting and interesting and intense and just, wow. Great show!
The Face of Boe thing is...ridiculous! Maybe in a good way, I still haven't decided how I feel about it ^^;
no subject
Date: 2007-07-02 03:56 pm (UTC)For me, after the Doctor/Jesus/Floating Figure Shrouded in Human Love Light moment, my tolerance for ridiculousness was high. Thus, the Face of Boe reveal was fine, though just awkwardly squeezed in there.
