I know that fandom goes on whatever canon does, but that's one of those personal things, and I'm something of a canon-whore for all my slasher tendencies - I have a hard time with non-canon fic. It's not that I can't appreciate it, but...I don't connect with it the same way; I have trouble writing it. The only way I have to get around this is to enter into Denial, and deliberately forget certain eps/seasons (e.g. when I watch Highlander, the only way I can enjoy any scene with Richie is to ignore that he was ever killed. And don't get me started on Serenity!) I get so disgruntled and protective about my McShep OTP because if that gets killed, I won't be able to fic anymore, or it'll be a struggle, anyway. And I like ficcing for SGA, dangit!
(Though right now my OTP isn't feeling terribly threatened, I must admit - Rodney & Keller is so poorly written that it's doing more to convince me that Rodney might actually be gay than anything before...!)
--another problem with McKeller is while with Katie Brown, we saw so little of their relationship that we could extrapolate some things. Rodney and Keller we've seen enough of that we now have a solid canon view of Rodney in a romantic/sexual relationship...it blows any of the more dominant Rodney-in-a-relationship characterizations (slash or het) out of the water. And I kind of detest the awkwardly shy "kinder & gentler" Rodney...but these days it's hard for me to imagine him being any other way in a relationship, with what we've been given. (Ahhh, if only they'd gone through with Rodney/Sam...I'd have sacrificed my McShep OTP for Rodney/Sam. Not that I would believe for a minute that it would last, but man, it would've been awesome, I loved the way Rodney was around her - yeah, I like assholes in fiction, what can I say? - and I loved how he brought out Sam's sarcastic side...siiigh!)
