I think Gero is part of the problem - he's always been the one of the major writers to write the most character-focused episodes... And Gero this season seems to be bored with writing the team as a team...
I agree. (Though I think it's more that Gero isn't balanced out by other writers, writers who "get" Ronon and Teyla and John as strongly as Gero "gets" Rodney. Or maybe more accurately, those writers who do get the rest of the team don't write character stories as strongly as Gero.) I mean, I don't think Gero dislikes the team as a whole, but I think he was interested in playing with Rodney outside of his comfort zones. And team is Rodney's comfort zone now.
...I think you were most often watching the Rodney Show, and the John Show, and the Keller Show, etc, while as I was tuning in for the Rodney & Team Show...
Yes! I think that's a perfect way of putting it. I mean, my favorite interactions (and characters, for that matter) tend to be Team as well, but it doesn't have to be, you know? (Part of the reason I think it's more a sliding scale than a stark difference.)
I don't think most of the writers ever were writing the Team show, or else were writing it only on occasions the plot called for it. So they didn't feel they were changing anything by not writing it.
Hmm... I think the Team was very important to the show, especially in the beginning (for example, all that effort put into getting the fourth right, exchanging Ford for Ronon). And I'd say Team is still important since the show has put effort into making sure no lasting conflicts spring up between the teammates (for example, the interaction between Rodney and Ronon this season, or John and Teyla in s4). So I don't think you were watching something that wasn't there.
I do think the show wants to work with a broader canvas than just the team, though. Plus, they've been writing team for several seasons so I was cool with them choosing this season to play around a little. (They didn't realize it was the last season; I wonder what, if anything, they'd have done differently if they had?) But they still had Team as Rodney's family in "The Shrine", and they gave us the "team breakfast as a routine" in "Remnants". So I'd say the Team is still considered important.
