Yeah, I'm with you, except for how Marvel Comics never got a chance to be my fun happy place, because by the time I got into the fandom, canon already sucked. Sure, I have several decades of back issues to play with, but still. :-P
I was bitching to a friend a few weeks ago that being a Tony fan in the comicsverse these days is kind of like getting sucked into one of those huge epic fanfics, when you start reading because the summary makes it look like it'll be a fun adventure story with maybe some angst and hurt/comfort mixed in, and then you realize that it's actually 75 chapters of your favorite character being horribly bashed and abused by every other character in the universe, but you've already been sucked in so you can't stop reading, even though it never gets any better and you have the uncomfortable feeling that the author is getting off on on the whumping a little too much. Only in this case, the bashing fanfic is actually canon!
