Only 2 eps of Gintama to go (*SOB*)and I'm not going to watch them until the blasted fic is finished, damn it!
Have seen the Cat arc - AHAHAHAHAH. Gintoki makes the ugliest cat, with his dead-fish eyes. Zura otoh was adoooorable. (If I had a black cat, I would be so tempted to name it Zura. Such a cute kitty name!) And yet it managed to go a bit serious and sweet in spite of itself. Have I mentioned how much I love this show?
Also Otose's little monologue about picking up another stray, and what Gintoki was like when she first took him in, and how he's changed and how he's gotten other strays - AWWW break my heart why don't you. I love pretty much everyone in Gintama (it's just one of those shows where everyone is awesome) but if I have to choose, Gin-san is my favorite. I've got a thing for that type of anime char, the crazy and/or obnoxious one whose craziness and/or assholery hides deep scars. And I tend to like them best the better-hidden those scars are, when mostly you just see the crazy and only get hints and nods to the why, rather than brooding AAAAAAANGST all the time. Makes the glimpses of more all the specialer.
One of the things I love about Gintama is that for all its crack, the chars are surprisingly coherent and developed . They've all got massive flaws and quirks and neuroses and obsessions, but they also all have their good points, too. What impresses me most about them, though, is that they're all structured such that they can ride the emotional rollercoaster that is the series. Pretty much all the chars are capable of both hysterically ridiculous and/or disgusting humor and genuinely touching drama, without becoming untrue to themselves. Gintoki is a lazy lackadaisical sugar junkie about 95% of the time, but when he gets serious and involved in that othertotally badass 5%, he's still completely recognizable. It's not even that he has a shounen split-personality (really he doesn't, that we've ever seen; Shiroyasha was just a name, not an alter ego), just that sometimes his priorities shift. But they're all like that, the Shinsengumi, Zura, all of them manage to walk the tightrope between dramatic extremes. It's a nifty trick.
Speaking of extremes, there was the Onmyouji arc - ZOMGWTF WHYYYYYYYY?!?! It's the 3rd ep - first there was Shinpachi and Pandemonium-san (which, having only just seen Berserk a few months ago, I recognized even before Gintoki referenced the Behelit, which only made it THAT MUCH WORSE) and then there was Gintoki's kintama ZIPPING AROUND THE ARENA LIKE A VERY CENSORED MAGIC MARBLE MATCH WTFFFFFFFFFFF. ...and then it STILL went cute by the end. Owww whiplash. ...Okay I love it but still, owwwie. ^^;
--Speaking of censorship, there was the Countdown ep, which went through the Top 10 lines I'd seen before - the best part was when about halfway through they made the same observation I did, that most of the favorite lines were rather completely not what Gintama is usually about. So they fixed it by resorting to the Gintama censorship standby and strategically bl**ping lines. Which is as hysterical in English translation as it is in the original: "My *bleep* is what's in reach of my *bleep*!"
Also "Katsura da!" montage FTW!
And then there was 189 with the INSANE CUTE and 194 with the INSANE, oh Hijikata, what has the mayo done to your brain? Also I believe that's the first time Gintama's actually resorted to "it was only a dream"? Apparently snot-monster!Kondou was too much crack even for Sorachi. ...Never mind that he had no trouble leaving him as a screwdriver or a gorilla... ^^;;
But now only two eps left...waaaah! They gotta announce that they're continuing the series soon, they just gotta; without any promised date to look forward to I don't know how long I can resist going ahead and reading the manga (and I'd rather not do that; it's more fun watching the anime if you don't know what's coming...!)
