For the last year I've been seeing Tumblr rise in popularity in fandom and I did not get it.

Apparently the key to getting Tumblr is to get obsessed with something popular on Tumblr, obsessed in a manner such that you share the general zeitgeist with the Tumblr-fen, and then there is a well-nigh infinite stream of fannish waves that you can merrily surf on (or more like get dragged below kicking and screaming by the undertow - but then you are breathing the squee and there are fanart and sparkly gifs and everything is beautiful and nothing hurts, mainly because your brain has melted into rainbow-colored ooze.)

Which is to say that, a) I have an incredibly boring and plain-looking Tumblr
and
b) it is 99% Avengers okay I'll be honest Loki-related reblogging.

(Presently I best understand Tumblr as sort of an advanced bookmarking service, as opposed to an actual communication or interactive platform. So yeah, no original content to speak of, I still prefer lj for essays and such, but you are welcome to check it out! I make no promises for how long the Loki-ness will or will not last.)

Tumblr is FUN! It's a little frustrating, because it's not easy to just tell somebody that I love what they've done. But it's a great place to see beautiful, funny, heartbreaking works of art.


And ridiculous gifs. And also spoilers. I love it.

Yeah, I think that's the long and short of it. Unless you happen to be a fan artist, then you'll also get to post your own stuff for other people to squee over. I've got a few fan artists bookmarked that way.

Yeah, there is some amazing fan-art that is Tumblr-exclusive, it's the main reason I know anything about it! But otherwise I'm mostly just there to coo and squee...

Heh, I haven't figured out how to HAVE an argument on Tumblr! (throguh reblogging posts with your own comments, I suppose? But in a popular post everyone's faving/reblogging, those get lost so easily anyway...)

Haha, yes, that's a pretty accurate description of tumblr. I mostly use it for the fanart, I'd never really paid much attention to that area of fandom before, so it's been kind of an experience. I do wish there were more interactivity, though.

Yeah, I love fan art, and Tumblr makes it so easy! (sometimes too easy; the lack of attribution on a lot of stuff drives me nuts...)

I have zero interest in fan art, though I'm happy that it makes other people happy.

I'm pretty amused if it's true that there's no way to leave messages on Tumblr, though, because why would fans use a forum that didn't allow them to communicate with each other. I mean, what would fandom be without some way to tell a complete stranger that she's stupid and uneducated and possibly evil because she likes a character you hate, or vice versa? :-)

well, there's sort of a way to communicate - by reblogging and adding comments - but most of the interaction is indirect. So you can pretty easily flame a whole swathe of people with a post along the lines of 'X IS DUMB!" - but personal responses are harder. And mostly people like reblogging squee, so...it's kind of relaxing for that? As long as you find an area that you're tuned into - otherwise it's just annoying noise!

Yeah, I can see that. I don't know if I'm so tuned into anything that much, not being the squeeing kind of person, most of the time. But thanks for an explanation of what Tumblr actually is, though. I've heard of it, of course, but was leery about trying to find it. The name just kind of turns me off, I guess. :-)

I too have recently fallen into the dark abyss known as Tumblr and the entire month of May seems to be filled with The Avengers and Loki and Hiddleston.

Not complaining, just an observation.

I also wonder when I can stop reblogging Loki and/or Hiddleston related things. That man is impossible! (punches his face with my tiny fists of adoration)

How is Hiddleston so cuuuuute? ;_; (he's one of those actors who is so totally different as his char - Loki is smoking hot, while Hiddleston just makes me want to pat his curly curly curls. I especially love him in costume and out of character, huggy!smiley!Loki = XDXXDXD)

And he really seems to be genuinely psyched to be there and really really proud of his work and and really enjoy talking about what he's done and/or gonna do and not just doing the interviews because he has to and ooo adorable *pinch* and aslkfja;sdklfjaslkdfj

I cannot stop myself from breaking out into a huge grin whenever I see his picture on Tumblr. Imagine how much my cheeks hurt after forever scrolling the whole night.
