"Cheerful" is relative

Watched the first two eps of the Netflix Daredevil tonight with the sibs. Have covered my eyes a bit and rolled them at other bits, but overall am enjoying it, nice sense of style and a great cast - glad to see Deborah Ann Wol again, she was always one of my favorite parts of True Blood; Foggy's actor is really nailing the genuinely funny and charming sidekick, and the guy playing Matt Murdock has the right look to come across as superficially sweet and dangerous underneath.

...Though gnine and I are freaking out the brother because we keep going, "Oh, this is so much more cheerful than Jessica Jones!" (...but it is!)

Yesss. He and Matt really make this show; they have an incredible amount of chemistry (in both the shippy and non-shippy ways).

Foggy's the kind of character who can be really obnoxious in several ways, but so far he's just been incredibly likable. Am looking forward to more friendshipping with him and Matt (or just shipping, I'm not picky! XD)

.... right? :D It IS though! JJ is bleak in a way that DD just isn't -- in spite of all the dark stuff in DD, it is at heart a charming buddy superhero show, with all that implies. And the cast is really adorable.

Yeah, I'll have to see how it goes - the plots are dark enough that the buddy/team stuff is slightly dissonant (heroes that torture and kill bother me more when they're cute otherwise) but after JJ it's nice to see a hero winning! It actually works well dramatically to watch in this order, his triumphs feel more unexpected than they would otherwise, but after JJ, where the best you get is Pyrrhic victories...

Yeah, I definitely get what you're saying about the dark stuff juxtaposed with the cute buddy stuff. I remember complaining a lot in my reaction posts about TOO MUCH CRIMEFIGHTING and not enough of the other side of the show, which I was 100% more interested in. (After you're done, you can go back through my daredevil tag for my reactions if you want.) I think the show seems more cheerful/optimistic to me in retrospect, having seen JJ and knowing how dark the Netflix MCU can go, than it did at the time ...

Hmm, yeah, Jessica Jones is one of those shows I really liked but have to rec with caveats, because it is seriously dark. Definitely more than DD, from what I've seen so far. From the start, Jessica loses as much as she wins - more, really. But it is a very good show, and I loved the characters, way more than I usually do in grimdark shows.

If you want you can watch the first ep of JJ to get an idea of it - the tone is evident from the outset.

Heh, I already had your tag open in a tab, am curious to read your reactions once I'm caught up! Especially as I don't know the comics myself. I always want more of my superheroes being human than being superheroes, which makes me feel like I'm doing comics wrong, but oh well... (one of the reasons I love the Arrow TV series...)

Haven't had a chance to watch more yet but I'm hoping I will soon! I'm looking forward to seeing where it's going, especially as it sounds like there's some nice friendship stuffs to look forward to :D
