WeiLan Week day 1!

WeilanWeek2019 is hosting a WeiLan Week to celebrate the Guardian novel's 7th anniversary! I have been meaning to do the 30 Days of Guardian thing but haven't gotten to it. But a week, maybe I can manage a week!



Day one: Beginnings, firsts, fluff / What made you pick up Guardian?

Not long after the show dropped, in August 2018, it went like a wave through a bunch of fandom peeps I knew. In particular naye got into it and fell hard -- and it had been too long since we shared a fandom, but I had mostly broken up with SPN and also thanks to RL really needed something shiny and distracting so she was pushing it hard -- and my sister gnine had a friend equally into it. And those enthusiastic recs on both sides made it sound like the most delightful cheesy fun slash show. So I was looking forward to it anyway, then I saw a promo pic -- it might've been this one:



and (to the shock of no one ever) me and my megane kink went OKAY I need to see more of that beautiful man in the Harry Potter glasses.

And then the first gifs I saw were from the taxi scene in episode 8...



So Gnine and I started watching, and ended up diving headfirst into cdrama and danmei and everything Zhu Yilong has ever done (and he is still gorgeous without the glasses, but oh, Shen Wei...!) and I'm learning a bit of Mandarin and it has all been totally worth it (yes, even Dreamlike Life!)

I often find myself that I hit a tipping point with people reccing me stuff, when one friend gets into something it usually just goes on my non-corporeal to watch list, but when two or three people are raving about a show it doesn't take me long to give in!

If enough people are into something, sometimes I just need to watch so I don't get accidentally spoiled for all of it!

I remember it suddenly cropping up among several folks in my dwircle, too. Nobody posted pictures or links to vids or anything, though, and while there were mentions of the chemistry between the two leads, mostly it was a cheesy aside in NiF love posts. I wasn't sure if I wanted to give a 40-episode show the devoted attention necessary for subtitles, when no one had said anything that made it sound particularly enticing to me, so I never hunted it down. It wasn't until Boni talked it up, after already making me fall hard for Yuri!!! on Ice, that I grudgingly said "tell me more," even though YoI was finally getting me writing again and I didn't really want to move on to another fandom. Then she pointed me at her big vid recs post, I watched a few of the non-spoilery ones, which gave me an eyeful of Zhu Yilong, and of Shen Wei's and Zhao Yunlan's chemistry and flirting and protectiveness and Shen Wei's BAMFness and beauty in pain, and I was like dear GOD, point me at it!!! And thus the Zhu Yilong Effect claimed another victim.

I was badly in need of a fandom at the time anyway, but still, Guardian took me by surprise by how tightly it latched on -- it just is so old-school in the best, most squee-worthy ways...

...and also Zhu Yilong, just, damn. I've done extensive research now and I still don't understand how he is that beautiful!

Haaaah my glasses thing is long-established and much mocked by friends and family (I have been known to go "Oh, that person is looking especially hot in that pic/movie/etc" and have my sister sigh and go, "yes, that's because they're wearing glasses." Which I would not have consciously even registered. (that Zhu Yilong actually does need them but apparently wears contacts most of the time is an immense tragedy to me ;_;)
