xparrot: Chopper reading (cancan)
[personal profile] xparrot
I am once more communicado! It's been a busy month. I uprooted myself completely and, as of last Tuesday, am now living in a lovely little apartment with my sister [livejournal.com profile] gnine in downtown Kyoto. Next on the agenda: find a (preferably non-English-teaching) job. And a work visa. ...Er, yes, I am quite, quite mad. Why do you ask? (actually I've been planning this for some time. Still can't quite believe I've actually done it, though.)

But - Japan! The food! mmm, onigiri! udon! curry pan! And I'm a mere bus- bike- or train-ride away from [livejournal.com profile] naye, which is the closest we've ever been, the first time we've lived in the same city. Heck, the same continent, even! Not to mention, schoolboys in uniform on the streets, Shounen Jump in every local convenient store, and a Book Off mere blocks away...

...so, has anyone ever translated the interviews with Takahashi-sensei in the YGO character guide? If no one else has done it, I'm gonna - the first three questions are about Kaiba and include little details that make the canon geek in me squee (Kaiba Corporation has 2000 employees and its annual turnover is 150 billion yen (which is almost exactly what I guessed it to be in one hitherto unposted fic. Go me!))

Lucky person! ...well, not that I'd trade places with you, but still. Reports from people I know suggest that immersion = temporary massive increase toward fluency, which is pretty damn cool, and I'd sure love to visit. (If you should happen to find yourself in a position to give really rough plot summaries of GB post the last chapter summary, I'd... I dunno, shower you in <3s and maybe send you little things from the States that are a pain in the tush to get in Japan, or something, but if you turn out to be busy, well, I certainly understand that.)

What the-!! I don't hear from you in forEVER, and now you're in Japan?? Lucky you T_T I miss Kyoto already. Well, if you ever get a hankering for American candy, drop me a line and I'll happily ship you some ^_^

Glad to hear you're safe and sound and moved in!

O_o You're seeking the work visa after entering the country, though? ...Don't get eaten by the Japanese INS, okay?

Well, damn. Here I was wondering what happened to you and you're up and moving. Congrats, hon.

as for that guide, I don't know if anyone's ever bothered translating the interviws but I'd love it to pieces if you did. God knows I love finding out all the little details

You just rock. Really you do. I'm glad that you are safe and sound.
I'm still jobless here in Albany, but of course I really haven't been looking. *laugh*

That sounds fantastic. *is a little bit envious* Seriously, I don't think you're that mad at all. Go you! \^_^/

The bit with the info about Kaiba Corp. and your close guess made me smile. I love it when things like that happen, it's like a confirmation that one's got the right feeling for a fandom. :)

Good luck for finding your preferably non-English-teaching job!

Good luck! Seeing your post made me smile! I still am planning to email when life gets less hectic.

Oh and yes! I would kill (well, not really but close) for a translation of any Kaiba material from the YGO character guide. I've searched for it, but as far as I know, no one's ever translated any of it into English.

KYOTO!

Oh my gosh! I am so jealous! I love Kyoto! (So many school boys in uniform and wait for the festivals when they dress in traditional costumes.) Be sure to check out a Book Off for great buys on used mangas! *Sigh* Wish I was there, wish I was there....

What part of downtown are you in? Kid Roomie and I talk all the time about moving there. Good luck on your job hunt!

A desire to improve my Japanese was one of my main reasons for wanting to do this, so, yep, am hoping immersion works for me!
And I gotta get back into GB - the sis has been buying Shounen Mag regularly, so I just need the spare time to look through 'em. Issue before last had Even More Terribly Cute BanGin Stuffs (tm)...

Yah, I know, I feel like I've been neglecting the flist something terrible, but it's been so busy! ^^; I kept meaning to mention something about it and then forgetting...
When were you in Kyoto? I visited it once a couple years ago, but actually living here is just - WOW!

And eheheheh...yeah. Hence the crazy part. But since I'd rather avoid the English-teaching there wasn't a lot of other options, as an American citizen >__> I have a couple friends who managed to find work and successfully avoid deportation, so...

I know, I dropped off the face of the world(wide web) for a while there...meant to mention something and kept running out of time. It really has been in the works for a while, but once I actually got down to doing it, it all happened so fast!

And it's quite crucial I practice my Japanese now, so translations for my fellow canon whore will be forthcoming ^^

Hee, I love Book Off! They've already started draining my bank account... ^^;

We're a little south of Shijo, just east of Mibu. It's a little more built up than I'm used to, actually (I'm a small-town girl) but nice. Yesterday we took a detour on the way to a 100 yen shop, walked through one of those little side-street neighborhoods that was half a temple complex. Wooden pagodas and gardens nestled right in the city - beautiful!

Well, once you are settled and such then I'd come. Now I have a GOOD reason to visit.

^_^ I figured you probably had a plan. It's just the diplomat-descended part of me that goes "eeeeeek, visa shit." But I'm sure you can swing it if there's precedent. You've got skills that employers will want. What kinda work are you interested in?

I visited Tokyo and Kyoto last summer. I wanted so much to stay on another week (though I won't miss the horrid summer heat -_-)--living there must be amazing! Wish you luck on the job hunt. And, you know, do visit the flist once in a while--we miss you T_T

Shijo, you are in the middle of it all! Did you know there is a webcam set up in Shijo?

Besides Book Off, my other weaknesses (don't laugh) were the Gatcha machines and the little boxed figures at the convenience stores. I have a really cool collection of little Samurai weapons that I picked up this summer. If I would have known how great they were, I would have bought more. And I emptied all of my change into a Gotcha machine trying to get a full collection of FMA figures ^_^

I think there is all boy high school somewhere near Toji Temple because this summer, while walking back from the temple the streets were almost crowded with young men in school uniforms and only a few girls (much to Kid Roomie's dismay)

Enjoy, but please don't forget your writings. Even though you have left three of my favorites (RTB, DV, & TH) on hold for months, no wait maybe its YEARS... but who's counting, you are definitely one of my favorite fanfic writers.

I visited for two weeks and it wasn't nearly long enough - that's when I really decided I wanted to try living here for a time. And yeah, I'm not looking forward to the heat, either...but still! Japan! ^_^

Actually I'd really like something in editing/publishing (and possibly translation if I could improve my Japanese to that extent) but my chances of that are pretty minimal. General office work is a better possibility, not the most exciting thing, but...(heh, worse comes to worse I can always sell dj on Ebay! Well, that won't get me a work visa but it'll keep me solvent! ^^;)

Hee, I love the little plastic figures ^^; I've already picked up a few - OP being so perpetually popular is something of a problem, because there's always adorable merchandise of it everywhere!

And I haven't and won't forget my writing, I swear! Winter is always a writing slump for me, but I'm going to get myself back to it. And thank you - it really means a lot to me, to know how much you like my stories. Even those I'm so bad about finishing ^^;

...and here I am, a year away from going to Japan & 8 months away from finalizing plans to go to Nara. (I'm going purely for the language, really; it's required for my minor. But dammit, that means I can't really take Chinese next fall...)

As for the # of employees at Kaiba Corp: only 2000 employees? Sounds like a lot of subcontracting, given how important Kaiba Corp is indicated at being, at least in the anime. ( But that makes a certain amount of sense -- less overhead & easier to adjust to changes in market and/or product if you don't have your own factories...and 2000 people is quite low for in-house large-scale manufacturing. Offhand, from those numbers, I'd guess that Kaiba Corp is mostly R&D, and it licenses out the patents... )
