I thought I was safe. I thought I was immune; I thought I was taking the necessary precautions, abstaining from the fangirl-decimating plague that is Prince of Tennis--only to go and come down with a bad case of an entirely different sports shounen.

The irony is, I don't even like sports. And of all the sports in all the arenas - American Football?? The most mind-numbingly boring sport in the world, as pretty much all the world except America agrees. And yet.

My Eyeshield 21 infection can be attributed to the following vectors:

--Hiruma
--The rest of the Deimon Devil Bats, every damn adorable one of them
--immicolia (fine, fine, we're even for GetBackers)
--Hiruma
--Blatant emotional manipulation, not limited to moments including: ice cubes, cream puffs, Death Marches, football games
--Distractingly sexy boys, even allowing that football has the ugliest uniforms known to mankind.
--Laudable levels of slashiness in the rival teams (see: the Shin/Sakuraba/Takami affair, Akaba/Koutarou, Kakei/the stripping ex-swim-team sweetie whose name I never remember, the Kid/Tetsuma (What? Oh, come on, they totally love each other.), Banba/Harao ("We've been doing it together for three years already." Haw.) Edit: can't forget Panther/Homer!)

Eyeshield 21 isn't the easiest manga to pimp out. Oh, it's funny, and pretty, and exciting for sure. But the slashy bits are mostly in the other teams; the Devil Bats are fun as anything, but while they certainly can be hot, and they could be doing each other, it's not handed to you on a PoT-shaped silver platter. But. There's Hiruma. Who's worth reading the manga for all on his own, if you go for obscene, evilly brilliant blond demons with an unhealthy penchant for firearms, unnaturally sharp teeth, and an unholy obsession with football. And while Hiruma is distracting you, his teammates sneak up, whack you over the head with a cute stick and drag you into their cavern of laughter and friendship and sportly team antics.

Knowing Hiruma? This is his wicked plan all along. Damn it.

I've never read a sports shounen before. I hate sports! It took about two months of immicolia raving about ES21's absolute cuteness before I dared take the plunge, and that was mostly because I wanted to know what the hell was up with Hiruma's ears and fangs... ^^;

No, you don't want me to fic. I'd skip the slash and go straight for the h/c jugular, and h/c with Hiruma is against the Geneva conventions...

Every char in the manga agrees Hiruma's demonic but no one actually points out that, quite apart from the cunning strategies, the artillery, and the black extortion book, he doesn't appear to be human. (Though they are quite surprised to find out his blood is red...)

Actually, if I were really going to pimp something else manga-y out to you I'd be shoving GetBackers your way. Or One Piece, because I still maintain that's about the best dang animanga series there is. Eyeshield...not sure if it'd be your cup of tea, really, it's just highschool boys playing football, no serious angst or depth. For all that it's got a way of winding its sticky fingers around your heart and not letting go. ^^

Oh, so let Sanzo snicker or be jealous or pull his gun. Ban/Ginji and Luffy & Co are definitely worth straying a bit from the Sanzo Ikkou, just so long as you come back to give them attention now and again. And xparrot's B/G ficlets are very sweet and her GB and OP fics very satisfying. Definitely what got me interested in OP. But you won't be any happier about how she left off on "Darkness Visible" and "Tiger Hunt" than where she left off on "Remembering to Breathe." And now she's succumbed to a NEW distraction?! Demons and football? As if the Kaiba Brothers weren't bad enough! **sighs and shakes head, resigned to this pattern**

I really do need to read the GB and OP manga and continue where I left off on the OP anime.... although god knows, I really don't have time for series that are that long!

I read a few chapters of Eyeshield awhile back, when Toriyama World was fanscanning it. Hiruma (he's the guy with pointy teeth, right?) was the main draw for me, too. But I just didn't read enough of it to get into the characters enough to forget that I'm reading about FOOTBALL, the least compelling sport known to man or woman-kind.

Eyeshield - yep, Hiruma's the demon. And yeah, the football thing takes some getting over. But the chars were entertaining enough to keep me reading, and eventually it passes a point that the sports become as fun as the rest of it...the last big game, I was practically hyperventilating, it got so tense. And this is knowing how it's going to end, because the heroes always have to win in the end in these things, but I was still cheering them on in their desperate straights and getting amazed at their wildly unexpected tactics and...yeah. It kinda sucks you in, eventually, if you give it half a chance ^^;;;

We need something new anyway ... we've been working our way through "Blake's 7" lately, but that one is best in small doses, because otherwise you get too distracted by the laughably bad 1970s BBC f/x.

And I wish that they'd hurry up and finish getting out all of Fullmetal Alchemist, too. I *love* that show, and I actually stopped downloading the torrents when it got licensed, for a change -- which means I have yet to see the last half of the series, and have, so far, managed to remain blessedly spoiler-free for it, too. Oh, and I still need to finish watching the Saiyuki anime! Okay, maybe I *don't* need something new after all. ;) Not that it'll stop me, I'm sure ...

But then I also admit I mostly glossed over all the chapters with the Poseidons because I just didn't find it all that interesting. Now Bando. Those are my boys.... or, my non-DevilBat boys. Ahhh I didn't forget Panther/Homer, they were there, I just lost this post the first time 'round and forgot to put them in the rewrite! (what is it with the other teams? The Devil Bats really aren't that slashy, not compared to a lot of other series...but every other team, pretty much...)

Mizumachi, yah, that's it. I'm rather fond of him and Kakei myself, while as Bando...eh. Love Koutarou, but Akaba was whatever. But really I'll claim Seibu as my non-Bats team of choice, just for the Kid.

I've been catching eps of the anime here and there on youtube. Seems like the Hah bros get a bit more screentime there, maybe? I didn't see the Juumonji/Sena in the manga so much, but in the show, oh yeah - watched the Death March eps, quite fun, though some of the show is kind of pissing me off, with what it's missing (they left out the Vegas blackjack! dude, not cool! And it looked like Kurita's creampuff story wasn't there either...the hell?) Also Hiruma's voice isn't right. I didn't have a particular voice in mind but that one just isn't him :P (picky picky picky!)

Yea, my biggest problem with the anime is just how badly they appeared to have butchered everything involving Musashi. He doesn't come back during the Seibu game! And I've been flailing in rage over that ever since I saw it. There is the odd redeeming episode (the one during the Death March with the Hah bros. running off is still my absolute favourite. The fistfight at the end. And the squabbling over how many colours in a rainbow and... oh god *squishes them*) And I still squeak over the thing as a whole because I'm ultimately a bitch to this series. But the manga is superior in every way. (Although... I'm pretty sure the creampuff story is in the anime somewhere. I'm positive. although it's been a very long time since I've seen most of the episodes save for the odd one I've rewatched)

Yeah, I watched some of the anime there at the end of the Seibu game, and what the hell? Why did they change that? (and yet they still did the super-fired-up Kurita, and grr the whole point was that happened because Musashi was back and time had restarted and grrr...umm, thinking about this too much, yeah ^^;) Has he actually come back in the anime, or are they gonna do his triumphant return during the Bandou game?

Dangit, I'm gonna end up watching most of the anime, I think. (...which maybe is better than rereading the manga, which I'm already doing, and what were you saying about being its bitch? >__>)

I know! Dammit! This is why I was flailing about in rage. They pretty much went and destroyed one of my favourite parts. And I think (given my complete inability to understand Japanese I don't know for certian) but I think he was finally convinced to come back at the end of episode 76. I'm just making an educated guess due to body language though. The Bando game hasn't actually started yet so, we'll see. Either way I'm still horribly irritated. (although I have to admit, as much as it annoys me, that part in the middle of the Seibu game where Musashi is supposed to come back, but instead they have Hiruma attempt to make the kick and not, and then act like he's completely broken..... that may or may not have made me squeak a lot.... I'm kinda weak like that. ^^)

I'm not totally sure (spoken Japanese is so much harder than written >_>P_, but watching it myself, I think Musashi was saying the same line he gave in the manga (in an earlier scene). Pretty much he's saying Hiruma and Kurita are idiots (...or something insulting) but then Sena says it's not like that, they're not like that, and he thinks that Musashi's father's condition is really serious so Musashi can't return, but that he shouldn't badmouth Hiruma & Kurita because they really love football. Then Musashi says he knows that better than anyone, and if by some miracle his father did get better, then morning or night he'd come running to kick. (Musashi's father goes "idiot kid") And Sena & Monta are happy because they realize that Musashi really wants to play football with Hiruma & Kurita, and that H&K understand this and that's why they're waiting. So Sena & Monta decide to believe in Musashi and wait, too, and run off with Monta saying, somehow, some way, they'll definitely win!
And Kurita is saying the two are really good...um, something. And then Hiruma says something absolutely unintelligible (all I can understand is "kuso debu" which is his pet name for Kurita, "fucking chubby") and dammit why must my favorite chars always speak in incomprehensible slurred boy-slang? (...except for Kaiba, who speaks like a samurai in written form half the time.)

...oops, didn't mean to translate the whole thing there, just got a little distracted by it ^^;; So by this at least it seems set up for Musashi to make his grand entrance in the Bando match (when does that start, do you know? looks like up through 78 is up on youtube...)

And oh yeah, Hiruma acting broken got to me so bad...except of course it was an act. I really should know by now. I think the only time he's actually lost control in front of people is the Musashi flashback when he kicks over the bench...but I keep getting fooled. Like all through the Shinryuuji game. Damn demon...

Eee, so many ES21 fans coming out of the woodwork! (andit's all Hiruma's fault, I swear. He's got this plotted!)
Kid/Tetsuma is just...the flashback during the Seibu game, "This way we can play together" - murder. This whole series kills with cute.

And yah, me too - I didn't even know what a quarterback was before ^^; Though I still don't understand most of the rules,...only enough to appreciate Hiruma's sheer cunning brilliance on the field, which is all I need ^_^

I've had some issues with my external hard drive, which was where Eyeshield ended up, on account of being HUGE, so I haven't started reading yet. That, and I've been catching up on my Pratchett (...he's good, neechan!), and - well. I'll get to Eyeshield. Soon. Really.

Well, if it makes you feel and better I haven't found many good doujinshi...the series is only 4 years old, so the used shops don't carry much (at least not with the most recent chars, who I love) Now, Comiket...there would've been some good stuff there. Sigh!

Good luck with the hd - and Pratchett! Yes, have been wanting to get into DW...got any recommendations? as I mentioned I've read a few here and there, but never enough to actually get into the series...
