xparrot: Chopper reading (shounen)
[personal profile] xparrot
Tuesday I got my 4 shiny discs of The Two Towers and my 2 shiny Finding Nemo discs. Shiny discs make X-parrot happy. And X-2 is out next week...

I love Lord of the Rings. I love the books, I love the movies. I didn't love TTT quite as much as FotR, but every time I saw it in the theater I liked it better, and I liked it last night even more. That may be because the first time, I'm noticing everything that's changed from the books, the missing bits and the added (Aragorn was not doing Legolas in Tolkien's original text. I'm sure I would remember that.) But once I know what to expect, I can enjoy the movie for what it is. It also helps that nearly all the changes, I can understand why they were made, and I agree with most of them. Still, there's moments I wished I had been able to see.

Which is what makes the extended version such a treat, because there's all those things I missed in the original, that are suddenly there. Mention of the EntWives, the trees, the end of the orc-count (I can see why that was cut, since closing such a dark movie so light-heartedly is problematic, but still, hee!). I don't remember if Aragorn's "He's not alone, Sam went with him," is in the book but damn if it wasn't a lovely little moment.

Most especially there's Faramir. I was one of the few fans who wasn't overly bothered by what the movie did to his character (dramatically speaking, Faramir served to redeem Boromir, but that wasn't so necessary in the movies because Boromir redeemed himself) but I think everyone who was will be pleased by the additional insight into his character. And everything else. Just his little speech (originally Sam's thoughts) about the boy who fell off the oliphaunt, that flash of Tolkien's feelings on war--I was so happy to have that back.

And then there's all the things I liked before, that I had forgotten how much I did. There's a sense of scale in these movies - it's what makes them epic, but I'll be damned if I know how Peter Jackson gets it to work as well as he did. In Matrix: Revolutions, Zion is an awesome city, but I was always aware that it's a CG model. But even though I technically know there's not actually ten thousand orcs marching on Helm's Deep, I'm hard-pressed to remember that in the heat of battle. I remember being vaguely annoyed by the Arwen interlude the first time I saw it; now I think that's a beautiful moment. Gollum continues to blow me away as one of the most pathetic and simultaneously disturbing characters I've ever seen. And flying Nazgul are fscking cool.

The only problem is now my longing for Return of the King is a zillion times worse - want to see! want to know what'll be there, and what won't - Shelob, I'm sure she'll be awesome, but I'll be most upset if Pippin doesn't look into the Palantir (it's all set up for him to, but still...) and then the final battles...and Mt.Doom...been waiting 2 years for this!
And speaking of things I've been waiting a while for...

And then in the latest chapter of GetBackers, Ban and Ginji are BACK TOGETHER after many many many moons...I have no idea what's actually going on story-wise, but--hugging! gratuitous shoujo sparkles! "The 's' means we're never alone"! (how many times does that make it?) *happy sigh*

The butterflies make me curious - when Madoka got abducted, I believe it was by guys who could turn themselves into such butterflies? And dammit, I still want Ban to say "I'm sorry." Even if he had reason to do it - good reason, if it really was to get Ginji to finally forsake Raitei - it still was a terrible thing to do to his boyfriend best friend. Ginji deserves an apology. And a kiss.

Also, is Emishi there or not? In the scans only Shido and the other three Maryuudou are visible...are he and Amon still together? One hopes?

But still...the GetBackers are back together, all set to kick major insect ass...it's amazing how happy a little shounen manga can make me ^_^

I'm curious about Emishi too... I haven't heard what's been going on with him and Amon for a long time. (And I just love the way you phrased that. Are they "still together"... bwahaha.)

And dorkily enough, I find myself more interested in those two lately than Ban and Ginji, so I really really wanna know. ;) Though the Get Backers reunion is awfully cute.

I know you think of Emishi as straight, but, uhh...he and Amon are making it VERY VERY difficult for me to see 'em that way... ^^;

and while my love for the BanGin is steadfast and really rather scary, I lovelove EmiAmon muchly and hope they end up happily ever after along with everyone else...

Nah, nah, I "try to" see Amon and Emishi as straight. Just because, you know, Shido can't be the only straight guy in the series. ;) However, I have no issue at all with slashiness because they're so cute and warm and fuzzy even without anything else in the equation...

It's sort of like Ban and Ginji, but with two Ginjis and some crack. :D

...So since you say this, I'm really curious as to what more slashy might have happened since the whole "You're draining my life? Well, that's okay, you're still my friend <3" scene awhile back. :D I mean, the only source I have for Emishi/Amon info is [livejournal.com profile] petronia's translations when they're posted to the comm. I really wish we had Japanese bookstores around here.

my guess is that they're still together; after all, look at how sparkly amon is! he's enjoying the BIG GAY LOVE reunion (he chirply goes, 'hey, is that the guy with the evil eye, midou ban?') ..he'd be depressed if emishi-yan went away, yo ;_; ...my guess is that they're in some ceremonial area, which is why only the shikizoku, the spider lady, and ginji are in there...? emishi, akabane, kadzu-tachi, and hevn are probably still nearby.

in any case i'll know more in a few weeks when kinos picks up v23 and shonen mag 51

I dunno how depressed he'd be really, or at least how much he'd show it - he's used to leaving people or being left, I'd assume... But yeah, I wanna believe Emi-yan's still nearby for him. I mean, I have no idea why he wouldn't be. :D

mrrrrr vol23 already and I only have 13-16 and nothing with Amon except kind people's scans. ;_; I need a trip to Chicago I think...

At any rate, thanks for the info, every little bit is appreciated. =)

The SAIKAI WAHA scene was violently cute enough for me to actually sit around and grin like a stupid idiot all through the anatomy lecture yesterday. And Genetics lectures today.

:D <- easily pleased

...must. see. get. backers.

i've actually read all your fics on them (so sue me, i'm a pathetic fan of yours) and it took me like at least three to figure out what the NAME of the series meant. godDAMN i love these series where the guys are probably meant to be straight but are oh, so, easily construed otherwise. shounen-ai isn't too much of a spin on damon and pythias, the middle ground we can all agree on.

and...wow *blink* you ARE a tolkien fan. the books are so rich i've never quite been able to appreciate the movies as much as i ought, although legolas is gratifyingly hot, the landscapes are...stunning, no other word for it--and gollum is just...so much more himself than i could have ever imagined him. i'm not a terribly visual person, i guess, and the movies have definitely helped bring Middle-Earth to life in a way that would've been hard to do inside my head. but still. the arwen scene is a bit weird, and non-canonical, especially because i thought she chose to become mortal for his sake or something? i mean it's true that it's a tremendous sacrifice to give up or even put off the havens, but she wasn't the first of her kind to make it--didn't tinuviel do the same, in essence? gotta stand by your man, even if your daddy is the all-cool badass from the matrix.

eheheh, don't count your Tolkien fans until they've actually made it all the way through the Silmarillion. Which I have yet to. I've read LotR a few times, but the truth is I just am easily obsessed by things, and after FotR's debut I hung out on a Tolkien newsgroup for a while, so I'm good at faking being a Middle-Earth know-it-all. The bit with Arwen is semi-canonical; she wasn't the first (actually that's why she has the choice to stay, iffen I recall correctly, since she's got human blood) and in the book it never really implies that she wavered about staying with Aragorn, but her flashforward to the future is as it's described in the Appendix. (their whole romance is in the appendix, not really at all in the main books...the movies have thus far left out Aragorn's real reason for wanting that crown, which is that Agent Elrond said no two-bit mortal man was gonna marry his daughter unless he was high king...)

And yes, you must see GB...! may I say, it's really kinda flattering that you read my fic for 'em even not knowing the show. ^_^ As for GB and straight...ahh, that's a dissertation right there. I've seen a lot of shounen that have relationships that glow purple under an ultra-slash light, but none quite like the GetBackers. We're talking a shounen which has had a guy/guy kiss (see my icon), and yes it was as part of a magical spell, but did it really have to be a two page spread? Then there's Ban's self-confessed ability to "hear Ginji's cry anywhere", and two and a half times now Ginji has thought he was dying and Ban-chan was the ONLY thing on his mind. To say nothing of Juubei & Kazuki and the red thread and the "I'll always protect you"...
...the going theory is that the mangaka like playing with fangirls' heads. And we let them because it's so damn fun...

X-Parrot...

I found your stuff on FF.net, and just wanted to express my admiration for your writings. Should you find the time or the inclination, I'd like to ask a favor of you, even though we don't know one another. If you could look over some of my stories and give them an appraisal, it would be apprecieated. I've read enough of your stuff to know that you will be able to constructively criticize, and you seem to *think* like I do. Irregardless, love to hear from you just from the out of control fangirl impulse to Kawaii!!! at tare Ginji.
