Two things you have to understand.

A) I discovered Dragonflight in the young-adults section of my local library when I was in the seventh grade; it was my introduction to the science fiction genre, and I read the first trilogies on a bi-monthly basis for several years. This was long before I knew what fanfic was, and I haven't actually read anything in the series for years, but it's deeply carved into my mental fanscape all the same.

B) I don't usually go for the really extreme AU fanfic - don't mind alternate timelines or alternate endings/futures, but when it comes to putting chars in wholly different settings I tend to wonder why not write an original story? Somehow SGA is the exception to this rule, however, because not only are there scads of stories in which John-and-Rodney are living in Texas/living on Nantucket/in an orchestra/penguins?/wild turkeys???/a RAINBOW AND A UNICORN OMGWTFBBQ FANDOM???? - but they're all outrageously entertaining and I'm finding myself craving more. I think it's because the chars, most especially our dear Dr. McKay, have such distinctive voices that wherever you put them or whatever you make them, they're still unmistakably recognizably them.

Given the above, I suppose this was only a matter of time. I'm just astonished someone else didn't beat me to it.

Hee, yes - we worked Ronon in when we were plotting it, I just couldn't fit it into this story. Guess I got no choice but to write the sequel...

Loved the story and would love to see more. There are actually two other pern/sga crossover. One is at Wraithbait and is gen and the other is at area 52 and is by maxs and is called acceptance http://www.area52hkh.net/author.php?name=Macx I do not know what the other is called because I do not really like it. But the acceptance one is brilliant and is actually the reason for my forray into the Pern books.

Someone else pointed out "Acceptance" to me, I'll have to try it out. They didn't make Sheppard the dragon though (really, he works so well that way, when I thought of it I felt certain someone must have done it before. ^^;)

The sheppard dragon is brilliant and I would love to see more of it(begging disguised as compliment ;-) ) I am very curious to non warrior Rodney becoming an honest to god Dragonrider. Brilliant and a bronze rider at that.... Love it!

Hee! I likely will be writing more...though I don't know how easy it will be to convince Rodney to actually become a dragonrider. Not his cup of klah, so to speak ^_^

Hello, x-Parrot! A friend sent me this fic, and I have to say first of all... I don't often read fic. But I read this one because it came so highly recommended and I have to say, I'm very glad. This is probably the most entertaining, well-written, in-character fic I have read in ages. (Yes, despite being AU and bereft of technology, Rodney somehow manages to stay Rodney!)

I also have a question for you, if you don't mind. Would you object if I were to roleplay with "Shepparth" and "R'ney" as characters? I confess the idea has caught my imagination. :) I wouldn't publish it or make money off it, anything like that. But I didn't want to just yoink your idea without asking.

Hi! My apologies for the late reply, I missed this comment before. I'm glad you enjoyed the fic, and that it stayed in char for you (always crucial for AUs).

And you're welcome to RP Shepparth and Rodney, have fun! I'm planning to write more in that 'verse myself, but don't feel obliged to follow my 'canon' - we're already playing with someone else's toys, so I fully feel that fanfic should be just as open to anyone who wants to take it somewhere else.
