All boring and ho-hum, and how are we supposed to believe this chick who conquers advanced alien tech with a defib, or performs brain surgery with deck tools is a good doctor?
conquers advanced alien tech with a defib you mean when she fried some circuits with an electrical charge ? Yeah, that's really new, never heard of it before, I mean it's not like they tell anyone with a pacemaker to stay away from electric charges because it could fry the thing, or it's not why people turn their computer off when there is lightning outside. And if you go at it this way, then when in "38 minutes" John had the idea of getting hit by the defib so that the bug would stop feeding on him, it meant that John is also a talented medical doctor who "conquered alien life with a defib" ? Yes I'm being a bit ironic, because anbody in the modern world knows that mixing electronics with and electric charge = bad. Kids know that. she didn't "conquer" anything. Honestly yes, it was a boring medical act. I'm not accusing Keller here, I'm accusing the writers who obviously have only a very basic medical knowledge, what they seem to forget is that the audience for Sci-Fi is smart and tends to be interested in science. Medicine is the science I'm interested in and when I see Keller giving CPR on someone stomach (litteraly, in Doppelganger she gave a massage to John intestines ! Does he have a medical condition that means his heart is down there ?), or when I see her hesitate, when I see her doubt herself about more than a few decision, it just makes me want to hurl something at the tv. Once again it's the writing and directing at fault here, if they don't have a proper medical adviser then they should not write medicine at all.
or performs brain surgery with deck tools I'm not saying she's a "bad doctor" mind you (I don't recall writing that), I'm just saying that she's nowhere near great enough to be CMO. She can be a good doctor and yet not being fit to be CMO. On the brain surgery, actually, John is right when he says that the proper surgery tools are extrememly similar to his *deck tools*, she should know that, she should be able to see the *potential* (I've been the one lying down joking about it with the doctors around me about that very subject). Then she didn't perform *any* brain surgery, she just cut a hole in Rodney's skull, the thing then got out *by itself* (and by the way, that's also exactly what she did with elisabeth : cut a hole in her skull, not perform brain surgery). How lame is that ? The parasite got out by itself ? (once again, the writers fail !) Where is the medical talent here ? Cutting a hole into people's skulls is called trepanation (or craniotomy) and has existed since prehistoric times and is still used in modern medicine, it's not something extraordinary.
So yes, I think that's she's just a normal, probably not untalented, doctor, but in no way is she anything special either.
I'm going to reply to xparrot's posts about Jennifer's ambition, or lack thereof, below. I think that goes towards your points about the cut-throat competition in the field of medicine, and I didn't want you to think I was blowing that part of your reply off. *g*)
I went a bit on a tangent up here because of this, my point was actually not about ambition, my point was about *talent*. In real life a lot of doctors (and DWB probably even more so) are *heroes*, they are *extraordinary* people, I have met some of them and I was awed !(even before I became a patient). So I don't think that it's asking too much for Keller to be on par with them. So far I've had no *real* proof that she is exceptionnal, I've never been in awe of her actions (I can perfom some of them and I'm not a medical doctor).
What ? 2 comments ? We need longer comments capability :p. (so part 1)
