w00t, I say. W000000000000000000000T!!!!!

"Our stories are singular but our destinies are shared." - Okay, if nothing else, we are going to have a president who can orate. That we don't have to cringe when he opens his mouth; instead we will perk up our ears. How long has it been?

Proud to be an American, damn it. Proud!

...now I am going back to bed. *collapse*

Happy birthday!
^^

I wasn´t awake for the election but first thing I did in the morning was turn on the computer to see who won. Yay!
Finally a president who sounds like an intelligent man. Maybe this really brings a ´change´- I have to admit I´m a bit sceptical but still, I´d love to be proven wrong.

...the only thing I still don´t get is that election system. I read everywhere that Obama had 300-or-so "election men" (or whatever they´re called in English) - what does that mean? Aren´t the votes counted?

Ah, whatever. Cheers for Obama and America! XDD

I'm skeptical myself, but he's so well-spoken, and he comes across as so sincere - it feels good to have hope, even if it's not guaranteed!

Ahhh, the American Electoral College system - um, yes, it's not you, America's politics are quite broken, it doesn't make sense. There's a Wiki article on it...basically,yes the votes are counted, but what counts is whether a candidate wins a majority in a state. If they get a majority (even by just 51%) they get all the electors for that state...

...umm, yes, it's confusing! Our democracy needs some help...but at least it worked this year! XP

It's the Electoral College. The US doesn't elect the president by simply counting the votes (waaaaaaay too much common sense.) Instead each state gets a certain number of electoral votes based partly on population with everyone getting a minimum of three -- so Alaska, the smallest state in population (I think) gets three Electoral votes, and California, the biggest getss 55. Each state votes, and the full number of electoral votes for that state go to the winner. So if Obama won California 60% to 40%, he'd get ALL 55 of California's electoral votes. Whoever gets up to 270 electoral votes, wins the election. It is actually possible, as Gore did in 2000, to win the popular vote (or have the most number of people who voted for you) and lose the election.
