2008 fanfic year in review
Jan. 7th, 2009 06:35 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Everyone's doing it, so I thought, why not? Three hours later - oh, that's why not. Man, I wrote a lot this year. I'm lazy and left out a couple short comment-fic; as always those and everything I've written is compulsively indexed on Delicious.
These are all SGA unless otherwise stated. Warnings that a lot of my comments may spoil the fics themselves, if that bothers you. Also, I ramble on a lot; I am way too fond of talking about my own writing.
January
On the Wings of Imagination {3,700 words}, PG, SGA/Pern fusion
I don't write AUs, or at least I didn't until SGA; I didn't even know how much I liked them, until SGA. Then
sga_flashfic had the not human challenge, and I can't remember how John-as-dragon came up, but I remember
gnine and I discussed it as we went to get Chinese, had the Impression pretty much settled by the time we got back, and I wrote the story that night. I was three-quarters-convinced someone must have had the idea before (with John's unwavering and almost pathological devotion to his loved ones, it's just obvious!) and was surprised that no one had actually done it. It also tickles me how many people adore Anne McCaffrey's Pern as much as I do; there's just something irresistible about her 'verse.
His Dinner with Jeannie {5,800 words} PG, gen angst; "Miller's Crossing" tag
I watched the last ten minutes of "Miller's Crossing" about a six bazillion times, plus I've got a major button for siblings, so I love Jeannie, and after reading a couple fics that portrayed her as less than appreciative of Rodney, I wanted to do something showing she did love her brother. I think I hate the title of this one, though I've never quite decided.
Thinking No, pre-slash McShep, Tag to "Be All My Sins Remember'd"
Only a ficlet, but my first actual SGA slash. Not my last, as it turns out.
Supply Run, PG, warning
sga_flashfic, I quickly learned, is really inspiring. When I came up with this I thought it'd be a black comedy, but it didn't turn out that way. This is one of the few stories I've ever significantly edited after posting - I wrote it in a couple hours, posted it in a hurry and went to work, came back and reread it and changed one bit. I only added a couple sentences, but judging by the comments before and after, it made a difference.
On the Rocks (And I Mean Ice!), {3,300 words} PG, 4th season, fluffy team gen fluff
When in doubt, there's always hypothermic snuggling! The title's from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and is probably the best part of the story. Though I admit I'm partial to Ronon reading fashion magazines.
February
Still Haven't Found {7,500 words} light R, het; John/Nancy; spoilers for "Outcast"
Not my normal sort of writing, but I've found I really enjoy this sort of relationship exploration, when I'm in the right mood. The weird thing is that I'm pretty much never in the mood to read it; when I read romance I tend to enjoy happy-ever-after 'shipping, and I don't think I'd like this story if I hadn't written it myself. So I was surprised and gratified by the response it got.
Tenets of Leadership in Vacuum {4,400 words} PG-13, gen, ep tag to 4x17, "Midway"
I wrote a lot of tags. This was just a conversation I wanted to see. Writing a fic in which nothing happens but talking kind of feels like cheating to me, especially when it's John and Rodney - OOC much? But sometimes it's more fun than writing an essay.
Relaxing, Mcsheppy, "The Kindred Part 1" tag
Yup, ficcing is more fun than writing an essay. Also I am all about making Rodney look better than the show would have him be.
March
Games of Chance {~12,000 words} PG-13, season 4 cast/spoilers
Since I started reading SGA fic, I found a lot of truly awesome scifi in the fandom, and I wanted to do one of my own. My original idea was a lot more complicated, putting all of Atlantis in peril instead of just Sheppard, but
sga_flashfic struck again and my unwieldy concept was more manageable when reduced to a flashfic. A two-part 12K word flashfic. Yeah, I need help. This is one of my favorite stories of anything I've written, it's fast and tight and it works. I never quite feel like I have Rodney's voice - he never sounds as intelligent as he should be in his head - but I think I got closest to it here.
As a bonus, it apparently inspired
greyias to write "Wit's End", which is awesome because I adore that story.
A Mantra for These Times {~9,100 words} PG, missing scenes for 4x20:"The Last Man"
I loved "The Last Man" and this is why, because this is the story that played in my head while I watched it - this and
gnine's vid "What Is Eternal". It's angst angst angst and I kind of love it. I don't know why I can't bear death-fics, while tragic alternate realities just make me shiver with glee. Odd, that. But this is one of my favorites.
With Healing in His Wings {~6,900 words} PG; SGA/Pern fusion, h/c, fluff
The second Pern-fic! Written because I was avoiding a ficathon fic, it's not the sequel story I intended to write (that one is started and will be coming to an lj near you...eventually. Hopefully!) but I have a lot of fun with this 'verse. And I think it's the most popular thing I've written in SGA.
April
Fake Birds and Real Holidays {~8,300 words} PG, post-season 4 speculation, fluff, angst
I imagined the scene of the team all watching Miyazaki together, and the rest just happened. This is really how I expected Teyla's baby story to go, so let me just state for the record that I am so glad it didn't - Torren's continued existence is one of the few things I actually believe the SGA canon did good in.
The Seat of Talents {~19,500 words} PG, gen; set late 3rd season, pre-"Sunday"
Written for the
sga_genficathon, this story nearly didn't happen - I had the idea for a while, but when I sat down to write it, it didn't work, to the point I was going to abandon it and try to come up with something else. It took me four starts to get on the right track, with a lot of help and advice from
gnine, who is awesome enough to tell me when something isn't working even when she knows I'll have fits. I'm glad we figured it out, though. What surprised me about this one is how many people found it tragic/sad/bittersweet - it's not that I don't get how it can be seen that way, but in my mind it wasn't that sad. But the concept is wrenching to any artist, I think. I admit to finding it cool that I can break hearts; I've always loved setting off such emotional resonance. It's one of the most thrilling things about writing.
"The Seat of Talents," "Games of Chance," and my unposted WiP McShep almost-epic I think of as a trilogy, titled, "Rodney Sits in a Chair and Angst Happens".
Almost All Grown Up {~5,900 words} PG, Pegasus AU
I've read a ton of AUs in which Teyla and Ronon were born on Earth. So, why not have John and Rodney born in Pegasus? I'm fond of this 'verse and would like to do more with it; it'd be an interesting perspective to examine the potentially colonialist attitude of the show. This story's just a cute little romp, though, because imagining the team together as kids is irresistible. Also, my first Teyla POV story, I think - not my last, though.
May
Safekeeping {~18,000 words} PG-13, gen h/c
I love h/c, and
gnine loves it even more, and sometimes I like to indulge both of us. And seriously, you can never have too much anaphylactic shock fic. Or Rodney-whump.
A Rational Universe {~7,000 words} PG-13, slash, John/Rodney
My first true McShep (finished, at least; I'd started others before this) - I think this one would've been better if it had been a touch more explicit, but here I run smack into my slash-writing conundrum, that I am absolutely balls at writing sex. Especially the slow, sweet sort of sex that I prefer with John/Rodney. On the other hand, yay, drugs!
Kuro to Ao (Black and Blue) {~8,400 words} PG, AU, John/Rodney-ish
I have been wanting to give "Naita Aki Oni" a happy ending for years, and
sga_flashfic's fairy tale challenge was the perfect excuse. I had way too much fun choosing kanji for their names, and writing other bits of Japan into the story. (One of these days I'll write that AU where John's a gaijin host at a gay club and Rodney's in Kyoto for an international technology convention...)
June
Relativity in Practice {~1,200 words} McSmooch, h/c
Short and sweet. Almost got Rodney's voice here.
July
The Only Thing {~7,500 words} PG, team gen
This fic is so flawed I almost didn't post it, but since I finished it, I did. No harm done, but it's still a bad story. I wrote one of the earlier scenes a while before, John-torture without having a story behind it; the rest I came up with on the fly. It was an experiment in omniscient 3rd person rather than my usual 3rd person close, but I think it lost most of the emotion in the doing, or maybe it was the lack of developed plot that killed it. It's too forced, at any rate. (Oddly, I was rereading one of my fics from a few years ago and noticed the first couple chapters were in 3rd person omniscient, but then it slipped back into close.)
Speech Deprived {~5,300 words} PG, McShep, fluffy h/c
This one, on the other hand, I'm fond of; it's silly and successfully cute, though the end is too abrupt. Also, three mouth-to-mouth scenes in three fics in a row - I was batting a thousand!
Five Things John Can't Help But Notice {600 words} PG, McShep
I find drabbles really satisfying to write, when I pull them off; I think I did, here.
Any Port in a Storm (the Cold Winds, Hot Air remix) {~5,200 words} PG-13; gen, h/c; remix of
friendshipper's Safe Harbor
gateverse_remix was the first time I've participated in a remix or a fic exchange, so that was fun. Writing all-dialogue for Rodney & Ronon was also fun. Rodney's all blocks of text while Ronon has only one speech that goes over a line long, which cracks me up.
Know Thyself for What Thou Art {~3,400 words} PG; gen, angst; tag to 5x03 "Broken Ties"
Back to the tags. Also my first Ronon POV (maybe my only one?) Mostly cheating conversation, again. This one played out in my head as I was biking home one night, trying to reason out the difference between guilt and shame, thanks to watching an episode of Avatar the day before.
August
Only a Day Away {935 words} G; McShep, sappy sappity sap
Written the day SGA's cancellation was announced, this was me dealing. No matter when a show is canceled, fandom always gives it a tomorrow.
September
All the Myriad Faces {~3,500 words} PG, gen angst; tag to 5x06 "The Shrine"
I loved "The Shrine," and for a couple weeks after I had various tags playing in my head non-stop. This one was because of my disappoint that Radek's part was cut. Still hoping it'll be in the deleted scenes on the DVDs!
Breaking Up in Three Easy Clichés {~3,300 words} PG, McKay/Keller, spoilers for "The Last Man" and "The Shrine"
Me dealing again, this time with the McKeller. I was surprised that several McKeller fans liked this one; I think they liked that I treated Jennifer sympathetically (I couldn't help but to; some of the basic idea in this is pretty personal to me.) It's another relationship examination, not a 'ship fic. I deliberately didn't go McShep because I wanted it to be comfortably, believably canon for me - interestingly, it still is, having yet to be contradicted by later episodes. I might not write any more stuff mentioning the McKeller, and just point to this one to explain how things worked out.
Horror Movie Blues {~1,500 words} PG-13, McShep, tag to 5x07: "Whispers
Silly. And there's beer. That's about it.
Inscribed (~1,600 words) G, gen friendship fluff
I beta'ed the amazing "A Clear and Different Light" for
friendshipper and
naye, from its inception; I almost felt like the universe was mine, too, so I loved splashing around in it for a bit. This is also when my unexpected Teyla-obsession reared its head. Somewhere along the lines I started getting quite perturbed that there wasn't more Rodney-Teyla interaction in the show, and wanting to see it really badly.
Unaccepted {~5,300 words} PG, tag to 5x06 "The Shrine". Teyla/Kanaan, potentially John/Rodney
Teyla's POV again. I felt a bit guilty writing this, because I used her to observe John/Rodney more than to tell her own story. But she's got such a wonderful voice for observing! I love the fic mostly because
jadesfire2808 did a podfic of it that is just amazing; I've listened to it half a dozen times. She brings the story to life with such feeling, it's like listening to a play.
October
Blue Colorado Skies {~11,400 words} PG, AU, h/c, team
AUs are like the Dark Side: once you start down that cracktastic path, forever will it dominate your ficcish destiny. In this case I plead innocence, however; it was for the
sgahcchallenges 2008 Fic Exchange and with the prompt "steampunk" I didn't have much choice. I've never written historical anything (I prefer scifi, as far from historical accuracy as you can get!) and I didn't feel like I adequately mastered the voices of the time, but looking up the Old West slang was a blast and now I want to do it again, some other time. Also note the Teyla POV scene - it's an obsession. As is making Teyla & Rodney old friends in AUs, it seems.
nor let it be fearful {~3,400 words} PG-13
I may hide it in daylight, but by night I am an oversensitive OTPing lunatic, and
friendshipper bore the brunt of that, to her detriment and my guilt. One of these days I'll learn not to read things that I know will break me.
November
Nothing? Man. I slump so bad in the darkening months.
December
NCIS: These Things Do Happen {~3,500 words} Rated S for Slash, non-explicit Sexual references, and Silliness
Maybe the silliest thing I've written since Read Between the Lines. I had a couple other NCIS ideas but I'm not sure they'll ever come to fruition; I enjoy the show but it's not that inspiring to me. Though there really needs to be a least one ridiculous Tony/Tim/Abby/Ziva OT4 kid-fic out there, so I might have no choice but to write it.
Out in the Open {~22,000 words} PG-13, McShep + Team gen, set after 5x14: "The Prodigal"
Written for
sga_santa, an action/adventure with team relationshipping story - not entirely successful, I don't think, but I'm glad people liked it. It's my third SGA story to feature hypothermia; it's also the third fic I've written that begins with characters caught in an avalanche (following And Miles to Go for Saiyuki and Chill for GetBackers.) Cliche, me? You don't say! Though the h/c here was pretty by-the-numbers; my favorite scene is actually when Teyla takes out the Wraith. Yeah, my Teyla obsession is still going strong - I don't know what it is; it's not that she's become my favorite character, either to watch or to write, and it's not that I have some kind of agenda to make her more popular. I just am finding it comfortable inside her head.
Overview
As usual I'm pretty much fandom-monogamous; SGA is my baby and I'm hoping to stick around for a bit longer at least. It's too much fun here, I don't wanna leave! Right now I'm not writing as much, but that's par for the course for me in the early winter; I'm hoping that when my writing zazz returns I'll still be into SGA. I'm still reading fic, which is a good sign; usually I quit reading before I quit writing. I'd like to do more 'fests (might sign up for McShep match if that's on...) This is the first fandom I've been active in 'thons and exchanges, and they're educational experiences - it seems I'm as bad about procrastinating as I was in college, and as good at writing under pressure, too. Even if I just barely squeak past the posting deadline more often than not. Something like half of these stories were for
sga_flashfic, which is inspiring without being as much pressure as the 'fests.
I don't usually set out to learn stuff when writing fic, but I tend to anyway, that's the joy of it. Writing the steampunk AU, goofy as it was, might have been my biggest learning experience this year, since it interested me in trying more historical fiction. And my father will be so thrilled/horrified if I do! The non-ship romantic relationship stories are also new to me, and I find myself wanting to try more of that, though I need to be in a very particular sort of mood to manage them.
My goals for this year are, as of now, to finish the crucial WiPs - the Pern-fic, and most especially "Closer to Ordinary," which I'll have been writing for a year come January 20 and it's about damn time it was done. After that, I'll see where I'm at, in fandom and in life.
Now, though, I'm going to bed, and with luck tomorrow I'll be able to write! *collapses*
These are all SGA unless otherwise stated. Warnings that a lot of my comments may spoil the fics themselves, if that bothers you. Also, I ramble on a lot; I am way too fond of talking about my own writing.

*collapses*
