xparrot: Chopper reading (muncle old skool)
[personal profile] xparrot
For everyone on the flist who's been looking at my recent posts, wondering what the heck is up with my latest obsession: five graphic reasons to watch The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

1) Because in the '60s, they hadn't yet invented the concept of "personal space."

The Hot Number Affair (close)
Or at least David McCallum & Robert Vaughn never got the memo.

Never Never

Children's Day

Very Important Zombie

2) Bondage. Seriously. Someone on this show had a kink.

The Tigers Are Coming Affair

Gurnius
As I was saying...

3) The love affairs never interfere with the partnership - they just add spice.

The Terbuf Affair
"I think you're going to need me."

Foxes & Hounds

The Birds & the Bees

Project Deephole

4) Turns out, the standards of male pulchritude have not changed significantly in the last forty years.

ending - Illya

Napoleon Solo

speedbump
Mmmm~

5) If you don't watch, you'll never know what's actually going on here:*

The Bat Cave Affair
*THE FINE PRINT: Even after you watch, you'll still have no idea what is actually going on.

Welllll, if someone, theoretically, didn't have DVD rentals like NetFlix handy, they might try bittorrent, particularly demonoid.com.

Or else one can let me know, and I can provide alternate avenues...

Ah! What beautiful pictures xparrot. They personal spaces ones certainly are most interesting. Of course the real five reasons to watch can be summed up like this 1. Illya 2. Illya in wet t-shirts 3. Illya in pain 4. Illya and 5. did I mention Illya. However there are certainly many, many, many other good reasons to watch nicely illustrated by you here.

I also contribute exhibit A, B, and C to further your case;

Ahahahah I was totally thinking of putting pretty much just the list you wrote! I might do a follow-up list. Or three. Because there is a lot of Illya to share...

And the pics, mmmm...oh man, that first pic, is that from The Foreign Legion Affair? eeeee. And the "kiss", naturally, is fantastic. And I almost put up that last pic myself, as more proof of the lack of personal space (seriously, where is RV's arm going there?!) - though I didn't because I haven't been able to figure out where it's from, is it a set-photo or what? (also DMc's makeup freaks out my friend. I find it bizarrely hawt, myself, but...)

I've seen it argued that slash was born out of the no-personal-space thing, which, the argument goes, is a product of the demands of the television screen. To have more than one recognizable person in a shot, they had to be pretty close together, especially in the early days of TV.

I don't think this is entirely true, but it certainly gives us fuel! (Smarm fuel too, of course :-) )

I think the no-personal-space definitely helped the slash along, but there's more to it than that. And I've also heard that they stuck actors close together so they'd be recognizable on tiny TV screens - but that's not really borne out in these pics, as a lot of them aren't that close-up; there's plenty more room on the screen around them. They could keep a hands-breadth between them without spoiling the shots...but I rather prefer it like this ^_^

(I actually think it's more that TV shows - American ones, anyway - have gotten weirder about personal space recently...when you watch bloopers/behind the scenes for most shows, the actors tend to touch more than they do in the actual shows...sigh! I don't really care if it's slashy or smarmy, I love the touchy-feely!)

Mmm, pretty screencaps. Eek, the touchy lack of personal space!! ♥♥♥

LOL In the last picture, Napoleon looks like he doesn't even know what the fuck is going on. Perhaps he's really looking at the director. "Dude, seriously... What is my motivation??"

This show is totally awesome! It's silly and campy and cheesy, but it's also a ton of fun. And the scripts (especially of the 1st season) are quite clever, and the guys have fantastic, snarktastic chemistry (the SGA guys have nothing on the MUNCLE guys when it comes to snark.) ...Also David McCallum is hot like a tiny blond thing is hot. Yow.

It's on R1 DVD...and there are other ways to obtain it, if one is curious...

You're preaching to the choir as far as I'm concerned, but please don't let that stop you. There can never be enough of pretty men with no concept of personal space huddling up to each other. There can never be enough Illya Kuryakin.
But I have to admit that much as I love the no-personal-space rule (and I do, I really do), I also really enjoy those momentary breakdowns between men who normally resist intruding on each others personal space, except when they really can't help themselves. Ahh, reluctant slash... it is a fine thing.

Heh - the personal space thing is so different on modern (American) TV, where everyone keeps their distance, so any kind of contact is super-charged. In MFU it's so casual...but so cute!

...My problem is that I love hugs (platonic, slashy, whatever) and there's none of those, sigh... (putting aside a certain A-team episode.) But then about the only show I watch that gives me anywhere near my recommended embrace allotment is New Who... XD

Putting aside the subtext, it's a crazy fun show. Well, if you like cracky '60s semi-camp, anyway. But it can be witty, and it's also one of those shows that all the actors are obviously having a blast making idiots of themselves, which is always entertaining...

That last pic is just plain evil. Don't tell me the writers/directors didn't know what they were doing. Or that RV and DMC were innocent either. They played it for all it was worth. And yes, Illya was my first major crush, eons before I saw the slash. MFU had it all, snark, hurt/comfort, bondage, partner whumping, wet t-shirt contests, and lines like "You have something that belongs to me." And hair! Don't forget the hair.
