xparrot: Chopper reading (muncle old skool)
[personal profile] xparrot
Busy day packing and cleaning. The Move is on Wednesday, the goodbye party's tomorrow. So to take my mind off of that, I am picspamming MUNCLE.

As the worst spies ever international super-spies, Napoleon and Illya don a variety of hats, most of which are ridiculous, or else ridiculously adorable - more the former for Napoleon, who accrues negative fashion karma nearly every time he puts something on his head; more the latter for Illya (even if it is a crime* to cover his hair.)

*punishable by death in eight countries, including Japan, San Rico, and Ingolstein.

So, in celebration of headgear!

Deadly Goddess
"Must we do this, Napoleon?"
"Yes. Yes, we must!"

Napoleon is quite fond of fezzes...unfortunately...

Come to the Casbah

Illya, on the other hand, is more partial to the burnoose:

Arabian

And will even fashion his own from a parachute, when he's not playing Illya of Arabia:

Foreign Legion

Napoleon can go for a burnoose himself:

Foreign Legion
But he can't quite pull it off.

Oh well, it's better than the pith helmet:

Her Master's Voice

Or the winter gear:

Yukon
"What do you mean, I look like a beagle?"

Matterhorn
"Never mind, Napoleon..."

5 Daughters
(you'll have to take my word for it that it's Napoleon in the middle. And that's Illya in blue.)

Napoleon has hats for all occasions!

Tigers Are Coming
...including this one. I have no idea.

Dressed up for a head of state:

Round Table

Round Table
You love me even in a bowler, right?

Napoleon is just hat-crazy in "The Round Table Affair":

Round Table

Round Table
Are you actually going out in public in that?

King of Diamonds
Oh, come on, Napoleon.

King of Diamonds
Oy vey!
(Tsk, tsk. People in absurd false mustaches shouldn't throw stones, Illya.)

Okay, how about this one?

Shark

Shark
Nope, Illya doesn't care for this one, either.

Illya generally wears hats only in the line of duty, as part of his disguises:

Foreign Legion
Here, for instance, he's disguised as a piece of coral...

Ultimate Computer

Mmmm, disguises.

Ultimate Computer
...now will you take that thing out of your mouth?!

Hula Doll

And occasionally while in uniform:

YoHoHo and a Bottle of Rum

Neptune
Mmm, Russian naval officer hat...

Or sometimes when he's just impersonating a Gypsy. Or, um, whatever he's wearing this for:

Terbuf
The difference between you and me, Napoleon, is that I make silly hats look good.

Terbuf
I'll drink to that!

Then there is the beret.

See Paris and Die
Tell us more...

In the '60s, berets were apparently a sign of Evil, as seen on the standard THRUSH uniform.

Consequently, both boys look absolutely fetching when pretending to be THRUSHies:

Arabian

Concrete Overcoat

Even moreso when they're matching!

Fourth season sadly does not feature many hats, but makes up for it with those it does have:

Prince of Darkness 2
--No, Napoleon, it's on your head, but it doesn't count!

Ah, here we go:

Maze
Why is he wearing a fishing hat in the desert?

Maze
And who cares, if he's going to sprawl so artfully while he does it?

Maze
Silly hats are also good for expressing I-think-my-partner's-dead-angst.

Maze
Aww!

And fourth season also has the best Illya-in-disguise, of course:

Gurnius
Ahhhhh, glasses...

Gurnius
Disturbingly sexy for a neo-Nazi.

Gurnius
Thrush dude: He must be UNCLE, we don't have anyone this hot on our side!

Gurnius
Napoleon concurs.
("...On the one hand, kissing my partner's perfect lips now would probably blow his cover. On the other hand...mmm, blow...")

Now! I must sleep.

(And let me know what amazing hats I've forgotten!)

Oh gosh, I'm trying to think of forgotten headgear. I think you've got most of them, bless your heart. Except didn't Illya wear a coolie hat in "Hong Kong Shilling?" That's missing. And didn't Napoleon wear something Tyrolean in, was it, "Monks of St. Thomas? Of course Illya should never cover his hair and, often enough, threw his hats aside as if acknowledging this truth. Napoleon, OTOH, shows a fetching lack of vanity with his selections, an unexpected goofiness. It's endearing really that he can summon his inner Elmer Fudd with a devil-may-care attitude. Thank you for this pix essay. It's a riot.

Oh, yes, I forgot the coolie hat! (I also believe Illya wore a cap while pretending to be a chauffeur in one ep, but I couldn't figure out which one. He also might have been wearing a turban when he was onstage in Off-Broadway, but I'm not sure as I've blocked that scene from my memory XPPP)

Napoleon is impressively unselfconscious about his attire (such as that awful sweater in your icon...wearing it on their date, no less! XD)

He wears a chauffeur cap in "Her Master's Voice" and something similar in, I think, "Shark." Nevertheless you've got the gist of this look from the taxi scene in "Hula Doll."

This has nothing to do with hats, but Napoleon's ugly ass sweater is a curious choice indeed for their ice cream date. It's almost as if he had gotten dressed to go home and the director had to call him back from the MGM parking lot to shoot the last scene.
