xparrotSometimes I wish I weren't so choosy - read: picky, snobby and elitist - I can be about my fanfic reading. I do take a terrible delight in total badfic; they're screaming funny. I don't take offense at Mary Sues because most of their authors will grow up into better writers and be horribly embarrassed by those early stories five years from now. It's a natural cycle. But otherwise there's lots I just don't read.
The really annoying thing is that I've gotten pickier, either because I've read more or because I'm getting crotchety in my old age. Stories I used to love I can't enjoy as much now. Was just rereading a favorite fic from five years ago, and while it was still good, there were aspects of characterization that bugged me now. Or the fangirl Japanese--wasn't an issue back when I didn't know Japanese, but it's unforgivably irritating now. I understand the impulse, I did it myself when I first started writing anime fic. It's difficult to capture a character's voice in another language. But if you're gonna use Japanese, at least make sure you know enough to use it correctly. Keep politeness levels consistent, please. It's too distracting for me now when characters shout "yamero!" one minute and then suggest "kaerimashou" the next. Or use "hai" persistently with close friends.
Yeah, picky picky picky. Urgh.
