EEEEEK - I just downloaded an ep of YGO. A dubbed ep. BWAAHAHAHA now I am going to go stab out my ears.
Why do they change the soundtracks in dubs? WHY? YGO has good BGM (pretty standard videogame-esque, but there's several overblown orchestral tracks, I am so very weak to those.) No god card theme? Tragic! Then they rewrite the script, which is already pretty talky, to narrate every single bloody event on the screen. Because American children are too stupid to interpret moving pictures, apparently.
And then there's the voices. Will not even mention Kaiba. Will not will not will not... okay, so Tsuda Kenjirou is a new favorite seiyuu (thanks to his almost-not-quite crying in episode 116. And his mad laugh. And every single Blue Eyes attack. --Speaking of which, what the hell is this "White Lightning" shit? "HOROBI NO BAASUTO SUTORIIMU!!!") This guy? Not so much. And "virus" is such a cooler word when contorted into Japanese pronunciation.
I'd been warned about Jounouchi's Brooklyn accent before, but still, yeah, that's pretty bad. Wait, who's talking now?
OMGGGGGGGGG THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE CALLING YAMI'S VOICE??? THAT DEMENTED SQUEAKY--
...
Never mind, Malik just spoke. Baby, what have they done to you?
Mokuba gets off easy, considering. Annoying instead of adorable but what can you do? *cringe* But, "Seto"? Aw, man. I know, I know, "big brother" sounds dumb in English, and "sir elder brother" moreso. But still - "Nii-sama!"
Wait, now I'm confused. Yami talks in a different voice in his head? Is that Yugi's voice? Yami's talking aloud now in a deep narrator's voice. A really irritating narrator's voice.
--oh good grief, I want to punch outJounouchi Joey. Just to shut him up. That's wrong. I like Jounouchi.
I shouldn't have picked an ep with so much dialogue from Kaiba *wince* His mad laugh doesn't hold a candle to Tsuda's lunacy. And he doesn't have his special gentle Mokuba-only voice, either. And what the hell, where's his great "Ore no pride, ore no tamashii" Blue Eyes summoning speech?? That was such a great bit! (I'm watching ep 94, 2nd part of Isis vs Kaiba. Or Ishizu? Thought it was supposed to be Isis?)
Mokuba: "Oh no!"
Yami: "Oh yes!"
X-parrot: "Oh god!" *gets fork for ears*

Date: 2005-07-20 02:04 am (UTC)Yami's dub voice still mostly makes me want to laugh my ass off every time I hear it. Kaiba's I could actually put up with (although I still laughed at it a lot) although now that I've heard the original, I'll probably be even more intolerant.
(as a sidebar since you did vaguely bring up the virus thing. I need to get off my chest the fact that while I was watching those eps I laughed every time everyone was all shocked that whoever Kaiba was dueling got around his "virus chain" To which I say: of course they did! He only attempts it every fucking time! And when has it ever really worked? Therefore I laugh.)

Date: 2005-07-20 03:31 pm (UTC)Yami's voice is just a really, really bad narrator's diction. Which makes sense considering they seem to need to narrate every single freaking event in the duels and elsewhere. I thought the duels were over-explained already but this is ridiculous...and Kaiba, yeah, his voice wasn't as painful as the others, but it has so much less emotional range - at least the ep I saw, but Kaiba goes through a lot of emotion in that ep, so...yes, 'pissed', 'angry', and 'gloating' are all important Kaiba expressions, but he also needs 'shocked' and 'caring' and 'thoughtful' and a lot of others...he's the definition of a complex character, and his voice should reflect that. Also his voice should be hot. But American VA casting rarely considers that quality...
Ahahah I'll see you the virus chain and raise you a FUCKING MAGIC SILK HATS. If Yami uses that ploy one more time I'm gonna scream. The duels would be less annoying if for like half of them they're so bloody obvious that I'm watching thinking oh for pity's sake just gimme the damn deck and I'll beat him. And I don't even play these games. This is more true in the beginning, the later matches have had some pretty clever stuff. ...and then I realize I'm fanning on card games and consider killing myself to end my shame. Though in Kaiba's defense, a couple of the times he uses the virus chain was in the filler, in which they all play worse and tend to repeat past moves a lot. It actually did work against Yugi at Duelist Kingdom, and against Isis (though she let him do it as part of her trap).
...And now I must go commit ritual suicide for actually knowing the mechanics of those duels.

Date: 2005-07-20 03:38 pm (UTC)...I don't have cable, I haven't seen any of the OP dub because no one's been ripping it, that I've found. I'm happier this way, I know, and yet I can't help but be curious, all the same...what did they do to my beloved marines???
and if you like YGO the slightest bit, do try to catch the sub. I don't think it's *quite* as great a defilement as OP (the difference mainly being that OP is a hell of a fantastic show to begin with, while as YGO is, er, not) but it's still worlds different. Such as you can actually *like* the chars...

Date: 2005-07-20 04:40 pm (UTC)As for much more pleasant things- I think I will catch up with the sub, then- for all that I've seen dubbed in english, I really want to like Kaiba- I imagine it could only be confirmed if I see the original. ^_^

Date: 2005-07-20 03:43 pm (UTC)I don't understand how people can watch the dub. Much less start fanning on it. I know, I'm a terrible snob, but still. Ouch.

Date: 2006-11-21 07:49 pm (UTC)Just in case you're wondering who the nosy girl is ^^
And he doesn't have his special gentle Mokuba-only voice, either.
Actually, he does, but it doesn't come out to play very often, it seems. In fact, if I remember rightly (I haven't seen the epi in ages), it's only at the end of DK. So that makes a grand total of, uh, once that I've seen.
I have to agree, though, the dub is nasty. When I first got into YGO, I had to watch the dub and I remember that I really did not like Kaiba - or Jounouchi. Jounouchi's dub voice got to me and Kaiba was just... urgh. I kept wondering why he was so damn popular.
Then the translated manga came out and enlightened me ;)

Date: 2006-11-24 05:02 am (UTC)Yeah, I read the manga first, before seeing any version of the anime, and I still find it superior to both sub and dub. Though Tsuda Kenjirou's voice is absolutely the sex...I loved Kaiba before I ever heard him, though. Which is a little odd, because I didn't care for the char at all at first. Then I started reading DK and he was not quite a villain anymore, and so very sweet with his brother, and, yep, I fell hard! But dub!Kaiba...*brrr*

Date: 2006-11-24 07:16 pm (UTC)It made me want to hug him. Then I saw BC, which made me want to scream. Yeah, seriously. He started mellowing out during DK (note: I never saw the RPG arc 'cause the channel I watched YGO on was rather crap about epis, so I don't know how he was in that arc) and then reverted to being unbearable during BC. The sheer inconsistency of his character, coupled with his actual characterisation made me take a very strong dislike to him.
So yeah, to summarise, dub!Kaiba's a git ^^ And also much <3 to Mr Takahashi for making me adore a character I used to hate.
