xparrot: Chopper reading (illicit miracles)
[personal profile] xparrot
[livejournal.com profile] gnine and I were discussing this meme going around a couple years back, in which you describe your fandoms as relationships. Because as any fan knows, fanning on a series is a little bit like being in love. So here's our little black book of fandoms, from our first scifi affairs to our naughty anime trysts to our current obsessions:

SW and ST were your gradeschool crushes. Now you're best friends forever and you still IM sometimes, though you're worried about where they're at now, what with the drugs and the arrests and the prostitution charges.

Gargoyles was the brooding boy in the corner of the classroom that you befriended because he reminded you of your other crush, but he ended up being worth it all on his own. You kept his phone number after you graduated and think you might call him someday.

XF was your first time, and it started out so good, everything you dreamed. You didn't realize at the time that he was on the downward spiral. You couldn't handle it, and God, was that a messy breakup. You take out the photo album once in a while, thinking of the happier times, and then remember why you deleted all his emails. And then burned your computer.

TS was the sweet guy who never was quite what you wanted him to be. But that was never his fault, and you don't regret your time with him. And he could be so awful sweet.

QL was a flirt, and you thought that something was there, but somehow you never quite went all the way.

HL was almost a fling, though you lost your nerve at the last minute. But geeze, boy was hot like a hot thing. You kept the photos. You have one on your wall.

RGB was a doll, and maybe he wasn't much to look at but with that sense of humor, who cares? He was way more fun in bed than anyone would guess, and still is good for a laugh, and better than a tub of Ben & Jerry's when you need comfort.

B5 is the long-suffering husband. Okay, so you never have quite consummated the relationship. But he'll cook you dinner and give you a massage, and if you had to choose he's probably the one that you'd want to spend the rest of your life with.

FY was your first girl, quick giggling kisses in the dark. You touched each other's breasts and thought that was as far as it could go, and it was better than you imagined.

Trigun, Kenshin, and Esca were that wild girl's only summer camp that showed you how much more it could be. You still send each other birthday cards.

I-man was a tease, the joker who could be sweet when you least expected it. It's the little things that count, and he'd leave a chocolate bar on your desk just when you most needed it. What a dear. A shame he didn't stick around long enough for you to really start something.

SG1 was wonderful for a while. He was just what you were looking for at the time, and he showed you a few things. You were ready to experiment, and he opened your eyes to a whole new world.

Gravi was crazy and sexy and you knew it wouldn't last, but are just happy it happened.

Saiyuki is a little scary, a little mean, but so damn hot you can't tear your eyes away, and the sex is even better than that. Half the time she dresses like a boy and she's gorgeous either way. You run into her when you go dancing and she gets too close, pushes you against the wall and it feels so good that you forget why you ever stayed away, but still, when you look her in the eyes, something scares you, a little.

GB is your vibrator. You keep it safe out of sight in a drawer and take it out whenever. It's always dependable, for all the ridging and tawdry wild colors. (and A&A-sensei didn't break it. Thank you!)

OP is the billionaire jetsetter you thought was just a crazy celebrity, bold and brash and silly, and then you got to know her. You don't know if you became best friends before you fell in love, or fell in love as you became best friends, but either way you're closer now than you ever imagined you would be, and you're probably always going to love her. Sometimes she goes away, but she'll always be there when you want her.

YGO was the split personality. Half of her drove you wild and the other half bored you to tears. Your friends didn't know what you saw in her. They never saw the two of you in your bed late at night, when you were on top of her and she gave everything to you. Afterward she'd drone on about card games, but you could always roll over and go to sleep.

12K was every bit as beautiful as you had heard. You were in love from the moment you saw her, and you really thought the two of you had a future. Then you woke up the next morning and she was gone, without leaving her phone number or a forwarding address. Damn it.

SPN is the hopeless romantic you always were looking for, that you can hardly believe is for real. Do they really make guys like this? He brings you flowers every date and ends each night with an unforgettable kiss on the lips. Just his hand on your cheek can turn your legs to jelly, but you've never invited him inside. Maybe you're scared. Or maybe things are so perfect like this there's no reason to ask for more.

SV is the abusive boyfriend. You know he's not going to change; you know he's only going to hurt you. But then he smiles at you, and you forget why you ever wanted to leave. N-no, that bruise isn't from his Clana! I just fell down the stairs!

SGA is the guy all your friends are trying to set you up with because he is sooo your type. From everything you've heard, he absolutely is, down to the dimples in his smile. This freaks you out. But you'll probably end up going out, sooner or later. Some things are inevitable...

Hee... I think I might have to try this for myself. (although for the record, your list is mostly confusing me because I'm not familiar with a lot of the abreviations ^^) And you are so dead on about YGO. *sigh* it's even worse for me now that I got myself tangled up with its spinoff and what, no Eyeshield? ^^

The abbreviations are for the little black book feel! and oh, YGO. It's so sad and hard to explain...GX scares me...!
...it's disturbing how many minor fandoms I actually left off this list. It covers a good decade of fanning, but still...that's a lot of obsession!

Hee, you're list is so dead on with my fandoms, especially the Saiyuki, Gravi, GB and SGA descriptions.
I realy love the SPN description because I've been looking for a really great description of this show, and this is it.

SPN is spoiling me for other relationships TV shows, I swear. I can't even read fic for it because just about everything I'd want to read, already happens in the show. except brother-hugs. darnit! Gotta love it!

I was only supposed to take a quick lunch break so I could get work done early and have time to write... but I made the mistake of checking my f-list and here this was, and I've been waiting for you to post it, so I couldn't resist. GREAT midday laugh! Love your characterizations of X-FIles, Highlander, GB, and YGO, as well as SV and SPN. The characterizations of anime as girls vs. western shows as guys works quite well. I can imagine the giggling that took place as you worked these out together! But when I realize that these aren't even all the shows and anime/manga you've devoured in the last ten years... Aaaarrrrgggghhh!! Scary! The two of you are incorrigible!

Yes...yes we are. It is kinda horrific, ain't it? And we drag you with us for at least half of 'em...BHAHAHAHAH! Speaking of...read any more SV yet? ^_-

I think you drag me in for only about a quarter--although you've managed to get me hooked on more than I want to admit in the last year or two. And no, have had next to no time to read or write this week, given the advertising for the depot book, the new book proposal, and inadequate attempts to catch up on everything that got ignored to finish the depot book. Am trying to catch up on LJ right now; and then I*want*to*write, dammit!

I remember when this meme went around and it's fascinating to see it brought back up again, how you classify each of these fandoms you'd had a relationship with. Your view of Saiyuki is spot on for me as well.

I do, however, feel it necessary to warn you about SGA, as it is very much the abusive boyfriend type. DDDDDD:<

Of course, I don't ship the ship that 90% of fandom does, so I would say that. XD

Saiyuki sometimes can hit so many of my kinks at once that it worries me...comes of being written by an angst fangirl, I suspect.

and SGA, heh...I doubt it could be quite as abusive as SV is (the trouble with SV - other than some parts of the show are just bad and not in the fun camp way but in the draaaama-makes-me-wanna-scream-way - is that I OTP Clark/Lex, which has the paradox of being both canonically impossible, as everyone knows they end up nemeses; and simultaneously canonically totally feasible, as...every fangirl knows the innate chemistry of nemeses XD)
With SGA I have the advantage of being almost positive I am going to join McKay's minions, because of my unholy fondness for assholes and jackasses and other obnoxious types, so... ^^

Word for SV and YGO.

I'm not in either SG1 or SGA fandoms, but from what I heard, a bunch of SGA episodes are remix of SG1 ones since the same writers wrote for both shows.

Yeah, since I did like SG1, that's made me curious about SGA for a while. That and the fact that it pretty much seems to have eaten the entire Western-fandom half of my flist...

Wow, I never thought of my fandoms that way, but it really is like falling in love. Ha ha! I friended you today, so I don't miss more of your great writing.

*laughs* Even before I saw this meme, I often equated my fandoms with being in love. It's the whole obsessive affection thing...
welcome to the flist! ^_^

Over a year since you wrote this, but... *laughs and laughs*

This needs updating, Neechan. ♥

Hah! I was in a nostalgic mood and while flipping through the largely moribund locketpair comm, I stumbled upon your journal because I remembered your ridiculously cute Seto/Mokuba gen. This entire entry made me solid-LOL (Trigun and Rurouni Kenshin and Escaflowne were my 2nd/3rd/4th favorite anime series as a teenager, and I would totes attend that sapphic summer camp), but the YGO description was oh god so perfect. I want to send it to all my friends with the note, "SEE SEE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY ABOUT CHILDREN'S CARD GAMES."

Hee, yeah...YGO can be an embarrassing fandom for an adult, but it's kind of irresistible. While I'm mostly out of it nowadays, I had a minor relapse a few months back (managed to get some fic done, anyway!) and discovered I love the Kaiba brothers as much as ever. Card games or no!

she doesn't tell you often that she loves you, but you feel it every time she looks at you, and you can't help but return it.

...even if she did draw a cock on your forehead while you were napping, that one time.
