xparrot: Chopper reading (sga atlantis)

Yup, I've got better things I ought to be doing - but I didn't get much sleep last night, so I'm not doing them. So here, have a poll!

I'm seeing a lot of divergent opinions around about Dr. Jennifer Keller 'round SGA fandom these days, and I'm terribly curious about the stats (my apologies to everyone who's heartily sick of this.) As is apparent to anyone who reads my lj regularly, I'm not exactly unbiased about this, but I've tried to make this poll as neutral as possible; please speak up if you think it fails in that.

Ah, okay, yes...in that context, these negative reactions do make more sense. I honestly haven't been seeing much of that sort of bashing (for all my antipathy, I'm not really into outright character bashing; I tend to prefer analysis, and most of my examination of Keller is less "I hate this character" and more "What are the writers doing wrong, that I'm reacting this way?" even if it sometimes might come across as the former more than the latter. So I tend to avoid the vitriolic hate, to the point that I'm not always aware of its extent.)

I do think character bashing is by-and-large harmless; it's a form of fan critique, albeit a more, hmm, emphatically expressed version than most. And some of what can read as misogyny I actually suspect is the reverse - women protesting, not female characters, but *inaccurate* female characters, unreal women who are missing crucial human elements in favor of male ideals. They use misogynistic language because it's the strongest we have, to reject these stereotypes. It's not conscious, most bashers are doing it more from emotional than analytical reasons. But there's reasons other than misogyny to dislike a large number of the female characters we're presented with on TV, and I think a lot of the hatred of female characters does stem from that.

On the other hand - it does cross the line sometimes, and the blurring between character and actor is especially harmful. And if you've been exposed to that, and if you're familiar with the more unsavory rhetoric (and rereading the original comment, I can see how it is in that vein, though I can't tell how sincerely it's intended) - yes, I can understand how it'd be hard to take comedically.
