xparrot: Chopper reading (dw master cheers)

So I've been hanging out in Doctor Who fandom, and HP fandom, to say nothing of SV fandom, and there's a lot of negativity there, folks disappointed with things in their canon or fandom or whatever. And I find myself getting worked up arguing the case of creators or chars, or else joining the ranting and criticizing and wanking. Not that there's anything wrong with any of that; I enjoy a good reasonable debate, from either side.

But sometimes it gets stressful, and I need to be reminded of why I fan. So, comment here about something in fandom that makes you squee, any fandom, anything, no matter how silly - something that makes you happy, that's why you're a fan to begin with. Something everyone likes, something nobody else does - no arguing, just shared squee (and by all means include links/visual aids!)

Moments of squee:

The last 20 minutes of "Last of the Time Lords" - Martha~! Doctor~! Master~! Murray Gold~!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, pg. 605 (US ed.) - "Am I too late? Has it started? I only just found out, so I--I--"

"For I may hope, may I not, sir, that you will allow me to remain permanently in your service?"
--Jeeves to Wooster, Much Obliged, Jeeves (don't have the book yet, but found the quote)
Permanently! It's practically a marriage proposal! Squee~!

I'm a fan because it makes me feel. I'm not a particularly emotional person, and the emotion that I tend to exhibit the most is anger/irritation. When a series makes me delightfully happy (or excessively horny), I think that's a really amazing and good thing.

And I just can't stand all the prettiness:

Me, with my fannish catnip (aka SGA) I want to squee about so bad, and now you're inviting me to, in your journal...? Oh, neechan. You don't make it easy. ♥ (With permission, I will mention a detail or two that makes me smile and squee just thinking about them, but if you'd rather I not... I'll be good.)

But just in general, right now I couldn't be happier than I am when I can write pages and pages of squee after watching an episode, and then having it turn into actual, coherent (mostly; there's still a lot of squee) meta, and I find LJ's character limit to be the most annoying thing ever, because I keep running into it! That kind of sharing, and the fact that I can babble at my fiancé and RL friend and they'll totally get what I'm on about, that makes me happy.

Fandom makes me happy when I remember discovering fanfic on the internet for the first time, when I remember that feeling of I am not alone, when I think of the hours and hours I spent reading fic - and then realize that I'm feeling the exact same thing now. All the hate and fanwank and disappointment, it hasn't actually gotten to how happy a good fic or new episode or shared squee can make me. And I've made the best friends through fandom. Really. The best. *hugs*

And all the moments I can remember, and have shared, and will continue sharing, that almost take my breath away, just thinking about them... Methos offering Duncan his head, during that first meeting, and everything that lead to. Luffy placing his hat on Nami's head. Seregil finding Alec, hurt and terrified and exhausted and convinced Seregil was dead. Jim and Blair standing side by side on the balcony of their shared home, saying so much with so few words. Gojyo finding Hakkai in the rain. Harry Dresden realizing he suddenly has a family. Ban's brilliant smile as he gets glomped by Ginji. Ivanova explaining exactly who she is. The Doctor taking Rose's hand, telling her to run. Crichton threatening people with "little yellow balls of light?". Saul telling Robin she will find people to belong with, one day. Delenn and Sheridan's last farewell. Dakar's incredible, unexpected, loyalty to Arithon. Mulder thinking he might have lost Scully. Tokito holding Kubota's rage back with a single word.

And then the things that exist just because of fandom, because of the spark of creativity and the urge to share it with others - late nights with Peter and Egon drinking hot chocolate, the whole mythology of Sentinels and Guides, the trial of the Seven Deaths, the possessions and presumed dead and self-sacrifice and many, many avalanches and ice-planets and surprise winter storms leading to snuggling... the sickbeds and the flopping and the catching and the holding and the hugs. ♥

I understand why you needed this post, neechan - well. You know why. But thinking about it, like this... fandom is fantastic, and I can't imagine a life without it. *hugs*

Eyeshield
The current chapters with the Kid and Hiruma interaction. Plus the Kid in general lately.

Hiruma's "You're late..." comment to Musashi. And the complete team finally together

Some of the cracktastic filler episodes in the anime. Including the one with the Hah Bros. wee!adorable!doppelgangers. And the one where the Poseidon and the Spiders joined forces (okay, really it was just Akaba and Kotarou and the Poseidon) for the DevilBats to have a practice match against.

YGO
The fact that Yugi just wants to be Kaiba's friend

The DDM arc in the manga... Like, all of it. But especially: "How could you break my other heart?"

Yugi vs. Ancient Evil! (that link also contains a bonus of the Duel Disc Frisbee thing from the GX manga, which also makes me squee)

Blue Eyes Toon Dragon. XD

And I know it's Not Your Fandom and that you said it scared you XD but you said any fandom so...
YGO GX
The Marufuji brothers! And all their angst! From the You're too kind to be a duelist thing in the manga to things like Episode 95 (which, okay, that's a link to the dubbed one... But even dubbed it's my most favourite episode ever. The angst. The bizarre sadomasochistic dueling. It wins.)

Evil possessed, incredibly emo and generally batshit insane!Judai As well as evil possessed Johan. oh the noise I made over that...

Edo Phoenix and his Dead!Daddy and his strange little Batman Complex and the fact that he has somehow managed to hit a level of screwed up that makes Kaiba look well adjusted.

I was going to say "the zombie episodes" but then I realized that other than the occasional slow ep, it's been pretty much non-stop flailing for me even after the zombie stuff was over. So I'm just going to say the last three quarters of season 3. ^^

The fact that it has two separate canons between anime and manga for me to muck about with. It's an AU writer's wet dream.

HP: The sheer phenomenon. So many fans! The knowledge that while I'm reading this book, millions of others go through the same experience. Hive mind and being just one among millions can be scary, but with HP it's somehow the other way round.

Also: "But I do not complain, because if you had not been expelled, we would never have met. Albus" True love between future old white wizard and future evil overlord! Best surprise of DH :D

Everything else and the multiverse: Crazy superrich multitalented spandex-wearing morally ambiguous mutant alien ninja freaks.

Yes! I loved that about HP...going to a movie premiere, in a packed theater and knowing there's others like it all over the world is one thing. But to be reading a book, and know you're sharing the experience with everyone...that's just awesome. I don't know if the HP phenomenon will ever reoccur in something else, but I hope it does...

Also yay for Grindel-dore. Totally canon, yo! XD

Okay, then. ♥ Sankyu~!

More moments that make me squee - characters coming through for each other despite themselves. Despite being socially awkward and not very good at feelings (Thomas, Harry, I'm looking at you too, you know!) despite not thinking of themselves as that brave or strong, but - when it all comes down to it, they're there, ready to die for their friends.

Actually saying "I'd die for you", which is... I'm still squeeing about everything Dean said to Sam, and everything Sam said to Dean, and - yeah. That gets me. ♥

Admissions of friendships having become as close and important as any family could ever be? Gets me more. So, two canon references to having found people who have become family? I'm STILL squeeing over that; yes I am. Oh, Rodney. Oh, John. Oh, team. ♥♥♥

Mmm. Teams. Nakama! There you have two more reasons to love fandom. ♥ Because where else could you share the warm fuzzies you get from seeing those bonds grow and develop and be forged into something stronger than any other force in the universe? ♥

ATARIMAE DA! Oh, now I miss One Piece! I need to catch up! And the next Wurts book! Yes - Arithon! ♥

See, without fandom we wouldn't have fanon! And fanon can make anything better. Right?

*big hugs*

Fandom in general makes me squee just for the experience of sharing something with other people. I love that I can watch a show in my living room and then go online and immerse myself in it -- chat with people about it, read other people's reactions and comment on them, download vids, read fic ... I love that, even though it also means that negative opinions and complaints sweep through the fanosphere like wildfire (and my current fandoms have gotten quite wanktastic at times).

The specific reason why I'm feeling warm and fuzzy about fandom lately is because something I've always hoped to see from fanfic writers was more openness with their stories -- that is, it's always kinda bugged me that so many of us fic writers think nothing of playing in the canon sandbox, but get highly bothered by the idea of anyone messing around with their stories. But I've been getting involved with remixes lately -- remixing others' stories, having my own remixed -- and a small group of us SGA fanfic writers have made our stories available to each other for tags and missing scenes. (Well, mine have always been, to anyone, but nobody's ever really taken me up on it!) And I'm loving this, the feeling of openness and fun and play, the pleasure of reading a good h/c story and thinking, "You know, that was great, but I wonder what happened when they all got back to the ship..." and then being able to write and post it without stepping on toes.

I just feel like, for all the wank and negativity that goes around, there are also a lot of propogating fannish memes that are really good ones, and are making fandom better and happier.
From: [identity profile] immicolia.livejournal.com
You so SO need to catch up on Eyeshield. Gunmans vs. the Dinosaurs. Winner takes on the DevilBats in the finals. And the Kid is just being made of awesome. (I'm even almost liking Riku! It's a first!)

GX is adorable. And yes! The Marufuji brothers! Ryo, who is terribly terribly stoic. And Sho, who is terribly terribly insecure and trying to grow out of his big brother's shadow. And they're all angsty and estranged and it's awesome. Edo's the guy who shows up at the start of season 2 and it turns out that when he was like five or six or so he found his father's murdered corpse, which is why he pretty much has a Batman complex (and one of the best "Sad Little Orphan" backstories in a YGO series XD). I could seriously go on a massive complicated tangent just about those three characters. And that's not even getting into the rest of the cast and the fact that I have yet to find a character that I actively dislike and the made of awesome that is this season and the fact that it's like the Doma arc from the original, but better. (actually, honestly, I'm starting to like GX better than the original overal anyway. The duels are shorter, which makes the plot tighter. The first season was terribly weak save for maybe a handful of episodes. But they seemed to hit a decent groove in season 2 and the third season has just left me in this constant state of "holy crap")

HYPOTHERMIA!! *cough*

Us sitting around, slowly, embarrassingly admitting and consequently realizing that we both liked this h/c...thing.

Reading parts of the AN hypothermia scene out loud together at Grandma's...

Otakon!

"He's gone!" "No. Oh god no..."

"Hikoouuu!"

"So, I was thinking about Tasuki..." *huggles [livejournal.com profile] naye*

"I killed, but I didn't just kill 50, I didn't kill a 100..."

"But Neechan, they WORRY about each other" (actually, at that time I would have still been calling you your name, wouldn't I? Ah, how things change ^_-)

"I think it'll save both of us..."

"Ascending to the stars..."

"They didn't even ask me any questions..."

"Disobedient" "Up yours!"

Sitting huddle on a school bus pouring over the latest bit of fic, only to tweak out, realizing I had to wait six hours till I got home and could chew you out for ending a scene MID SENTENCE!

"子安は...面白い" Or whatever exactly he said there, god it's sad how little Japanese we knew back then...

"Spontaneous combustion of someone you don't like?"

"I'm better with a horse, really!"

"Can I interest you in a lift?" and the subsequent frightening of non-fan friends who were over when we squeed our hearts out at that!

Remembering the initial use for your wonderful, calming "There is a light coming out of your stomach"

Niichan ditching his girlfriend so he could stay up with me to beat FFX together, because fanning and family rated higher ^_-

Reading HP aloud with our whacked out family.

Mommie giving us fic as presents...

"If you go to Z'ha'dum, you will die" and then we went, and you made me wait till the next morning just cause it was Xmas eve and you're evol!11

Things That Make Me Squee

From: [identity profile] dogwoodblossom.livejournal.com
First of all, that Jeeves/Wooster line you quoted. When I first read that it made me squeal aloud, and yeah, it's totally a marriage proposal. Another thing that makes me squee with Jeeves and Wooster is the story title, "Jeeves and the Song of Songs." And anytime Bertie says anything about how he likes women fine, but from a distance. And just the general knowledge that Wodehouse was too sharp and witty not to completely understand all the implications of what he was writing.

The Shawn, Gus, Lasseter love triangle in Psych. Also Gus's little blue car.

The ending of Superman: Red Son made me literally squeal and dance around for an hour. Good thing I was along at the time.

The Deathly Hallows wrap ups of Aunt Petunia and Narcissa Malfoy made me so so so so happy.

Kidfic. Awesome sugary adorable kidfic. Specifically "Reconcilable Differences" and "Conflicts of Interest" in SV fandom and "With Six You Get Eggroll" in due South. Also, pretty much anything Speranza writes about dS.

My roommate just got me hooked on White Cross and it's pretty squee-y. How can you not squee over a terrible 80's/early 90's anime about four attractive young men with checkered pasts who live and work together as florists by day and assassins by night?

I squee whenever I see or hear mainstream references to the fannish shows I watch, especially in MST3K (if that can really count as mainstream) and The Simpsons.

Whenever creators and/or actors admit that the characters are slashy because they are writing/playing them that way.

Have been attempting to avoid GX (except for the crack that is the manga), but ended up glancing over your journal and snickered madly for quite a while.

*head desk* and I thought Season Zero hurt my head... XD

So, um, hope you don't mind, but I friended you because YGO!crack spam is love. ^_______^

What I love about that scene in YGO at Duelists' Kingdom is that the entire pattern of Kaiba's life has led him to the conclusion he can rely on no one but himself (with the possible exception of Mokuba.) He awakes from a coma to find that his Board of Directors and his business partner have had his brother kidnapped.

It would be the sappy, expected thing for him to awake from pieceing his heart together ready to be Yugi's friend -- but he doesn't. Instead he spends the entire rest of his part in the story grappling with the ideas of friendship and trust. And I love that neither Mr. Takahashi or Kaiba takes the safe and easy way here.
