the fandom sunshine happy squee~! post
Aug. 2nd, 2007 10:48 pmSo I've been hanging out in Doctor Who fandom, and HP fandom, to say nothing of SV fandom, and there's a lot of negativity there, folks disappointed with things in their canon or fandom or whatever. And I find myself getting worked up arguing the case of creators or chars, or else joining the ranting and criticizing and wanking. Not that there's anything wrong with any of that; I enjoy a good reasonable debate, from either side.
But sometimes it gets stressful, and I need to be reminded of why I fan. So, comment here about something in fandom that makes you squee, any fandom, anything, no matter how silly - something that makes you happy, that's why you're a fan to begin with. Something everyone likes, something nobody else does - no arguing, just shared squee (and by all means include links/visual aids!)
Moments of squee:
The last 20 minutes of "Last of the Time Lords" - Martha~! Doctor~! Master~! Murray Gold~!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, pg. 605 (US ed.) - "Am I too late? Has it started? I only just found out, so I--I--"

"For I may hope, may I not, sir, that you will allow me to remain permanently in your service?"
--Jeeves to Wooster, Much Obliged, Jeeves (don't have the book yet, but found the quote)
Permanently! It's practically a marriage proposal! Squee~!

Date: 2007-08-02 02:27 pm (UTC)But just in general, right now I couldn't be happier than I am when I can write pages and pages of squee after watching an episode, and then having it turn into actual, coherent (mostly; there's still a lot of squee) meta, and I find LJ's character limit to be the most annoying thing ever, because I keep running into it! That kind of sharing, and the fact that I can babble at my fiancé and RL friend and they'll totally get what I'm on about, that makes me happy.
Fandom makes me happy when I remember discovering fanfic on the internet for the first time, when I remember that feeling of I am not alone, when I think of the hours and hours I spent reading fic - and then realize that I'm feeling the exact same thing now. All the hate and fanwank and disappointment, it hasn't actually gotten to how happy a good fic or new episode or shared squee can make me. And I've made the best friends through fandom. Really. The best. *hugs*
And all the moments I can remember, and have shared, and will continue sharing, that almost take my breath away, just thinking about them... Methos offering Duncan his head, during that first meeting, and everything that lead to. Luffy placing his hat on Nami's head. Seregil finding Alec, hurt and terrified and exhausted and convinced Seregil was dead. Jim and Blair standing side by side on the balcony of their shared home, saying so much with so few words. Gojyo finding Hakkai in the rain. Harry Dresden realizing he suddenly has a family. Ban's brilliant smile as he gets glomped by Ginji. Ivanova explaining exactly who she is. The Doctor taking Rose's hand, telling her to run. Crichton threatening people with "little yellow balls of light?". Saul telling Robin she will find people to belong with, one day. Delenn and Sheridan's last farewell. Dakar's incredible, unexpected, loyalty to Arithon. Mulder thinking he might have lost Scully. Tokito holding Kubota's rage back with a single word.
And then the things that exist just because of fandom, because of the spark of creativity and the urge to share it with others - late nights with Peter and Egon drinking hot chocolate, the whole mythology of Sentinels and Guides, the trial of the Seven Deaths, the possessions and presumed dead and self-sacrifice and many, many avalanches and ice-planets and surprise winter storms leading to snuggling... the sickbeds and the flopping and the catching and the holding and the hugs. ♥
I understand why you needed this post, neechan - well. You know why. But thinking about it, like this... fandom is fantastic, and I can't imagine a life without it. *hugs*
um... this got long.... and I only limited it to three fandoms ^^
Date: 2007-08-02 02:57 pm (UTC)The current chapters with the Kid and Hiruma interaction. Plus the Kid in general lately.
Hiruma's "You're late..." comment to Musashi. And the complete team finally together
Some of the cracktastic filler episodes in the anime. Including the one with the Hah Bros. wee!adorable!doppelgangers. And the one where the Poseidon and the Spiders joined forces (okay, really it was just Akaba and Kotarou and the Poseidon) for the DevilBats to have a practice match against.
YGO
The fact that Yugi just wants to be Kaiba's friend
The DDM arc in the manga... Like, all of it. But especially: "How could you break my other heart?"
Yugi vs. Ancient Evil! (that link also contains a bonus of the Duel Disc Frisbee thing from the GX manga, which also makes me squee)
Blue Eyes Toon Dragon. XD
And I know it's Not Your Fandom
and that you said it scared you XDbut you said any fandom so...YGO GX
The Marufuji brothers! And all their angst! From the You're too kind to be a duelist thing in the manga to things like Episode 95 (which, okay, that's a link to the dubbed one... But even dubbed it's my most favourite episode ever. The angst. The bizarre sadomasochistic dueling. It wins.)
Evil possessed, incredibly emo and generally batshit insane!Judai As well as evil possessed Johan.
oh the noise I made over that...Edo Phoenix and his Dead!Daddy and his strange little Batman Complex and the fact that he has somehow managed to hit a level of screwed up that makes Kaiba look well adjusted.
I was going to say "the zombie episodes" but then I realized that other than the occasional slow ep, it's been pretty much non-stop flailing for me even after the zombie stuff was over. So I'm just going to say the last three quarters of season 3. ^^
The fact that it has two separate canons between anime and manga for me to muck about with. It's an AU writer's wet dream.

Date: 2007-08-02 04:34 pm (UTC)The specific reason why I'm feeling warm and fuzzy about fandom lately is because something I've always hoped to see from fanfic writers was more openness with their stories -- that is, it's always kinda bugged me that so many of us fic writers think nothing of playing in the canon sandbox, but get highly bothered by the idea of anyone messing around with their stories. But I've been getting involved with remixes lately -- remixing others' stories, having my own remixed -- and a small group of us SGA fanfic writers have made our stories available to each other for tags and missing scenes. (Well, mine have always been, to anyone, but nobody's ever really taken me up on it!) And I'm loving this, the feeling of openness and fun and play, the pleasure of reading a good h/c story and thinking, "You know, that was great, but I wonder what happened when they all got back to the ship..." and then being able to write and post it without stepping on toes.
I just feel like, for all the wank and negativity that goes around, there are also a lot of propogating fannish memes that are really good ones, and are making fandom better and happier.

Date: 2007-08-02 06:38 pm (UTC)The Shawn, Gus, Lasseter love triangle in Psych. Also Gus's little blue car.
The ending of Superman: Red Son made me literally squeal and dance around for an hour. Good thing I was along at the time.
The Deathly Hallows wrap ups of Aunt Petunia and Narcissa Malfoy made me so so so so happy.
Kidfic. Awesome sugary adorable kidfic. Specifically "Reconcilable Differences" and "Conflicts of Interest" in SV fandom and "With Six You Get Eggroll" in due South. Also, pretty much anything Speranza writes about dS.
My roommate just got me hooked on White Cross and it's pretty squee-y. How can you not squee over a terrible 80's/early 90's anime about four attractive young men with checkered pasts who live and work together as florists by day and assassins by night?
I squee whenever I see or hear mainstream references to the fannish shows I watch, especially in MST3K (if that can really count as mainstream) and The Simpsons.
Whenever creators and/or actors admit that the characters are slashy because they are writing/playing them that way.

Date: 2007-08-02 08:46 pm (UTC)As much of a YGO addict as I am, the story I adore is the Lord of the Rings. I love the way these characters are all on a hopeless quest – and the way the story says that it’s okay if they give up hope – as long as they never stop moving forward. That sometimes having a clearly marked duty and course of action can compensate. And I love the way the characters struggle to make the ethically right decisions no matter how dire the circumstances. And I love how every single thing ties together so you can’t change any detail no matter how minor without the story falling to pieces. (In fact me and my cousins used to play that as a game – picking some really minor thing and then spelling out what would change as a result and how that would contribute to Sauron’s victory. Did I say used to play?)
Besides how can you resist a story where there’s debate over whether the hero has succeeded or failed at his own quest, and a fandom where people flame in Elvish?
My main squeeeee! Moment comes from the movie though – I love it in The Fellowship of the Ring when Boromir fall down chasing after Frodo – and then they have a close-up and you can see bits of leaves and twigs in his hair. And the scene where they cross the river into Lothlorien will always be branded with my daughter saying of Aragorn: “He’s going into the water with boots on! He needs aqua feet!”
I said a lot of what I love about Yugioh in a reply above, but it’s easy to sum up: Seto and Mokuba Kaiba. I love the way Kaiba’s the embodiment of the road to hell being paved with good intentions, I love the way he struggles and takes us along with his struggle to reach a true future for himself and Mokuba, and I love the way he is always, uncompromisingly is snarky, arrogant, often totally wrongheaded self. I love his youth. If he was older, he’d just be another fucked-up adult with a kid and a high pressure job and no handle on way too much emotional baggage. If he was this clueless he’d be depressing and if he was better adjusted, much as I hate to admit it, he’d be less interesting. But the thing that makes him poignant as opposed to pathetic is that he’s handling all this stuff, or trying to, when he’s just a kid himself; that he’s in way over his head and is too clueless to realize or admit it. And I love it that he is intentionally and unintentionally funny in equal measure.
I love the way Mokuba accepts everything, the constant kidnapping attempts, his own brother’s insane operating style, duel monsters coming alive, as if this was just another day. I love Mokuba because (in the manga) his love for his brother isn’t blind or idealized, he loves him not just despite, but also because of, how damaged his brother is. And I love the way he matter-of-factly lets everyone else know they just don’t measure up.
And I have to include the line from The Princess Bride: "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You have killed my father. Prepare to die."

Date: 2007-08-07 01:22 pm (UTC)Aw, 11th-hour Percy, DeanandSam, and Jeeves/Wooster are definitely squee-worthy. I'd go on about how much I enjoy them and other fandoms I lurk in if I am not rushed for time, but since I miss SV like mad, of course I'm going to make time to squee about how everything Clex makes me happy! (That is, when it doesn't make me weep due to AlMiles-induced horrors/anvilicious angst/years of canonical unresolved sexual tension. ;-P)
Random links:
Summer-themed guide to SV watching.
Comics crack from the Superdictionary!
It doesn't look like Clex, but... thinking about the possibilities of Lex and J'onn interactions in SV context is a Clex-related concept I'm in love with, which kind of reminds me of the good old days when Martha Kent was approving of Lex... *sighs wistfully*
I will always smile now whenever I--
1. Fail/succeed at cooking spaghetti
2. Eat pasta with (too little/much) onions in the sauce
3. Get tomato sauce on unwanted places,
so yay for random Clex fic themes! :D
I do not have new links to vids and art, because visual arts tend to make my brain melt with incoherency so I tend to go slow in appreciating them so as not to overwhelm myself with too much happy-making things. :D
And fandom! The Clexy side of SV fandom gives me braingasms with science fiction+mythology+gay (and the optional porn). The show makes you want to go running around screaming "LEX IS DOOMED TO THE NTH POWER OH NOES!" like a crazy fangirl, then someone posts Clex fic, and it's as if all of the sudden the sun shines through the clouds and you are awash with the happy knowledge that all is right with the world.

I can't think of one for Yu-Gi-Oh. Damn, but that's dissapointing...
Harry Potter: I just loved all the bits in the Shrieking Shack in book three, and in the latest book I loved the bit with Harry and Lupin arguing. It was great that Lupin has some very dramatic momenents.
Saiyuki: Not so much of a *massive* fan of this show (though I do like it and have written fic for it,) but I adored the ep with Sanzo and the cat. Just so cute.
So much squeeage. I may post again with more thoughts, but those are some of my fave squees...

Date: 2007-08-17 12:59 pm (UTC)And aww, YGO - the bit in the manga with the Kaiba brothers' lockets, the flashback of when Mokuba first gave his nii-sama the pendant, always breaks my heart, just because that was the precise moment I flipped like a switch from being vaguely annoyed with their two-dimensional villainy to adoring them to bits. Brother-affection will always get me, every time!
