Regarding Torchwood's season 2 finale [spoilers]:

Umm. Okay.

I am really, really glad I've never given my fragile fan heart over to this show.

That being said, considering Owen has been my favorite non-Jack character since s1, and in s2 probably became my favorite over Jack; and my s1 fondness for Toshiko expanded to adoration in s2; and I merrily boarded their 'ship with "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and never got off - I am surprisingly okay with this.

Some of that is shock, I think (did they just - they really - they can't - they're not actually -...?) And I don't know that I'll be watching the third season, because the show's not that great when it comes to plot, etc, and forming any attachment to the chars is obviously a zero sum game - you can't hate them, but it's impossible to really love them, because if you dare to they may be gone when you blink. (Though I might keep watching, because, boykissing. Yes I am that weak.)

But part of it is that Owen and Tosh, much as I loved them, and important as they were to Torchwood's operations (probably the two most crucial when it comes to daily business, how are they going to find replacements?), they were the two most left out of the team dynamics - the least favorite son and daughter of Jack's gathered family, and by the end of this season, their closest bond was to one another.

If only Owen had died, it would've been heartbreaking to watch Tosh deal. If only Tosh had died, Owen's struggles with accepting emotion and love might've tipped him over into breakdown. But both of them going out together (even if Owen didn't know he was hearing Tosh's last words just as she heard his - and that sort of breaks my heart, and sort of cracks my shit up simultaneously) - that's actually the least painful way it could've gone.

And hey, this way I can tell stories in my head of the adventures of Owen & Tosh: Angels with Attitude! Because Tosh would look fantastic in white robes and wings, and Owen would be adorable in a halo.

Coming up next, the premiere of Torchwood: Afterlife:

"What the...Tosh? What are you doing here? For that matter, what am
I doing here? I'm an atheist! Was an atheist! What the hell? ...or Heaven, as the case may be..."

Just watched it! It made me happy~! (I mean, it was insane and idiotic and absurd and just...everything I love about Who, really. The show makes me feel like 9 years old again, giddily loving my exciting, touching, fun shows without question. ^_^)
(and it has hugs. Oh man. The Doctor lives on hugs!!!!)

Ha. You know, I had much the same thought as you, when they both went together. There were several points during the last 15 minutes of the episode when I thought we were going to lose either just Owen, or just Tosh, and watching the other one put themselves back together would have been heartbreaking. Plus, I would have had to figure out whether I still wanted to watch the show! This way, though ... they're together in whatever passes for a Torchwood afterlife (I love your idea of the idea of the two of them as Angels with Attitude, with the DBZ-style haloes!) and my interest in the show pretty much died with them, not to mention the extreme silliness of the plot of the finale putting the final nails in *that* coffin. Shortest fandom EVER! Now I can just invoke the same defense I use for Whedon shows: "la la la, did not happen, la la la".

(Also, now I'm terrified of watching the new season of Who, because given the RTD shows' penchant for killing off characters who aren't white and blond, I'm afraid Martha might not survive and I don't know if I could take that too ...!)

The extreme silliness of this plot put you off? Be grateful you never watched s1, that finale had a giant CGI demon attacking Cardiff! XD

(When you say the Whedon defense - you mean the shows didn't happen, or just some parts? not that I've ever seen Buffy...but yeeeeah Firefly is an exercise in denial (Movie? what movie?))

(Who traditionally doesn't tend to kill off major chars...only one major Companion ever died, that I know of. And the blond thing's kinda unfair, in Who and TW there's only one major blond char anyway! XP ...the white thing, yeah, more of a point, but they still come up aces ahead of American TV these days, soooo~...)

Ahh, happy days. When the only one who died was Jack - and the rest of the team were all surprised, because they had no idea he was resurrectable!

But nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever beat Ianto's cyberwoman girlfriend battling it out with their pet pterodactyl because Jack covered her in BBQ sauce.

I mean.

Look at that sentence. It's the plot! It's the actual plot of an actual episode and. Uh.

Oh, Torchwood. I may not fan on it, but it truly is a special show, with the ability to go spectacular in all kinds of directions.

..."Cyberwoman" is actually one of the reasons I kept watching the show. There's cornball, and then there's that...spectacular, as you say!

I find it ironic that it's the ones that Jack actively recruited who ended up sort being shunted to the sidelines as he ended up growing closer to Ianto and Gwen. And especially considering his initial reaction to Ianto, that's saying something.

I can only thank the writers for giving Owen and Tosh at least a heroic sendoff. And while I wailed against the Owen/Tosh ship, I ended up boarding it literally three episodes before this which is the worst timing ever on my part. God, the throat-choke when Owen said, "We sort of...missed each other." GAH!

That is pretty ironic...perhaps a mild case of screenwriter schizophrenia, that not all the writers knew the chars' backstory?
Or else Jack prefers those who pursue him, rather than those he pursues. (Jack-Tosh especially I just wanted more of - she'd had the longest relationship with him of all of them, and they implied that sometimes the way they acted, but we never got to see it, siiiigh...)

s1 Owen/Tosh did nothing for me, but I was all waving flags for it this season, when it started implying Owen might be able to return her feelings after all (lack of a pulse regardless). And am totally shipping them in the afterlife XP (denial? what is this word you speak of?)

Probably, yeah - one reason the new Who & especially Torchwood have been rocking the fangirl world is because Jack Harkness is canonically omnisexual and not afraid of proving it. In Torchwood he is in a relationship with one of his men (Ianto) and James Marsters plays an ex-lover - the slash is 100% canon, and there's several very, very nice kisses (Jack's actor is openly gay and has more chemistry with the guys than with the girls, imho.)

...when it comes to season 1, that's practically the only reason to like the show. It's...severely flawed. Just so you know.

...on the other hand, that is not the only amazing kiss, so...it's a very good reason!

Just finished watching not five minutes ago. I'm exhausted from a long day and in complete denial over the finale. The Doctor will arrive in the season premiere and take Jack back in time to rescue Grey, and then Tosh and Owen won't die. Tra la la!

And I don't even love this show. Just in deep like...some eps only and parts of others.

Did I mention I'm exhausted?

Boykissing! Wheee!

Tosh and Owen's deaths were heartbreaking. My husband even while saying the reason Owen died was actually completely impossible it was still a great death scene (and after watching a lot of other shows kill off characters we love in a lot worse ways, this was refreshing)

Mwahah - realism is not something I demand in shows about aliens running around Cardiff, so I ignored the whole mechanics of Owen's death (I know nothing about nuclear reactors but I didn't think they had liquid 'fuel' or whatever was being vented - into the control room?! like, the places that are usually shielded so people can fix the meltdowns without melting down themselves???)

But yeah, it was a good way for him to go. Very Wrath of Khan, I thought!

Okay - first let me do the necessary pre-explanations or you'll be wondering who I am and why I'm leaving strange messages at your LJ. I've stumbled here as a result of your SGA fic, "The Company He Keeps," which I have repeatedly attempted to leave a comment for, except I've been soundly thwarted by the firewall in the area I'm living in, and of course, the almighty firewall at work. So I could get to LJ by proxy, but couldn't log in to leave any comments. Now that the firewall has magically lowered at my office... I show no mercy.

And whew, all that for a comment that has turned out to be shorter than the explanation... because all I really wanted to say was: it's too late! *weeps* I've already given up my fragile fan heart to the show...
