Regarding Torchwood's season 2 finale [spoilers]:
Umm. Okay.
I am really, really glad I've never given my fragile fan heart over to this show.
That being said, considering Owen has been my favorite non-Jack character since s1, and in s2 probably became my favorite over Jack; and my s1 fondness for Toshiko expanded to adoration in s2; and I merrily boarded their 'ship with "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and never got off - I am surprisingly okay with this.
Some of that is shock, I think (did they just - they really - they can't - they're not actually -...?) And I don't know that I'll be watching the third season, because the show's not that great when it comes to plot, etc, and forming any attachment to the chars is obviously a zero sum game - you can't hate them, but it's impossible to really love them, because if you dare to they may be gone when you blink. (Though I might keep watching, because, boykissing. Yes I am that weak.)
But part of it is that Owen and Tosh, much as I loved them, and important as they were to Torchwood's operations (probably the two most crucial when it comes to daily business, how are they going to find replacements?), they were the two most left out of the team dynamics - the least favorite son and daughter of Jack's gathered family, and by the end of this season, their closest bond was to one another.
If only Owen had died, it would've been heartbreaking to watch Tosh deal. If only Tosh had died, Owen's struggles with accepting emotion and love might've tipped him over into breakdown. But both of them going out together (even if Owen didn't know he was hearing Tosh's last words just as she heard his - and that sort of breaks my heart, and sort of cracks my shit up simultaneously) - that's actually the least painful way it could've gone.
And hey, this way I can tell stories in my head of the adventures of Owen & Tosh: Angels with Attitude! Because Tosh would look fantastic in white robes and wings, and Owen would be adorable in a halo.
Coming up next, the premiere of Torchwood: Afterlife:
"What the...Tosh? What are you doing here? For that matter, what am I doing here? I'm an atheist! Was an atheist! What the hell? ...or Heaven, as the case may be..."

Date: 2008-04-05 06:39 pm (UTC)(Also, now I'm terrified of watching the new season of Who, because given the RTD shows' penchant for killing off characters who aren't white and blond, I'm afraid Martha might not survive and I don't know if I could take that too ...!)

Date: 2008-04-06 08:22 am (UTC)(When you say the Whedon defense - you mean the shows didn't happen, or just some parts? not that I've ever seen Buffy...but yeeeeah Firefly is an exercise in denial (Movie? what movie?))
(Who traditionally doesn't tend to kill off major chars...only one major Companion ever died, that I know of. And the blond thing's kinda unfair, in Who and TW there's only one major blond char anyway! XP ...the white thing, yeah, more of a point, but they still come up aces ahead of American TV these days, soooo~...)

Date: 2008-04-07 04:01 pm (UTC)Ahh, happy days. When the only one who died was Jack - and the rest of the team were all surprised, because they had no idea he was resurrectable!
But nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever beat Ianto's cyberwoman girlfriend battling it out with their pet pterodactyl because Jack covered her in BBQ sauce.
I mean.
Look at that sentence. It's the plot! It's the actual plot of an actual episode and. Uh.
Oh, Torchwood. I may not fan on it, but it truly is a special show, with the ability to go spectacular in all kinds of directions.

Date: 2008-04-05 06:57 pm (UTC)I can only thank the writers for giving Owen and Tosh at least a heroic sendoff. And while I wailed against the Owen/Tosh ship, I ended up boarding it literally three episodes before this which is the worst timing ever on my part. God, the throat-choke when Owen said, "We sort of...missed each other." GAH!

Date: 2008-04-06 08:27 am (UTC)Or else Jack prefers those who pursue him, rather than those he pursues. (Jack-Tosh especially I just wanted more of - she'd had the longest relationship with him of all of them, and they implied that sometimes the way they acted, but we never got to see it, siiiigh...)
s1 Owen/Tosh did nothing for me, but I was all waving flags for it this season, when it started implying Owen might be able to return her feelings after all (lack of a pulse regardless). And am totally shipping them in the afterlife XP (denial? what is this word you speak of?)

Did I mention I'm exhausted?
Boykissing! Wheee!

Date: 2008-04-18 09:23 am (UTC)And whew, all that for a comment that has turned out to be shorter than the explanation... because all I really wanted to say was: it's too late! *weeps* I've already given up my fragile fan heart to the show...
