Regarding Torchwood's season 2 finale [spoilers]:
Umm. Okay.
I am really, really glad I've never given my fragile fan heart over to this show.
That being said, considering Owen has been my favorite non-Jack character since s1, and in s2 probably became my favorite over Jack; and my s1 fondness for Toshiko expanded to adoration in s2; and I merrily boarded their 'ship with "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and never got off - I am surprisingly okay with this.
Some of that is shock, I think (did they just - they really - they can't - they're not actually -...?) And I don't know that I'll be watching the third season, because the show's not that great when it comes to plot, etc, and forming any attachment to the chars is obviously a zero sum game - you can't hate them, but it's impossible to really love them, because if you dare to they may be gone when you blink. (Though I might keep watching, because, boykissing. Yes I am that weak.)
But part of it is that Owen and Tosh, much as I loved them, and important as they were to Torchwood's operations (probably the two most crucial when it comes to daily business, how are they going to find replacements?), they were the two most left out of the team dynamics - the least favorite son and daughter of Jack's gathered family, and by the end of this season, their closest bond was to one another.
If only Owen had died, it would've been heartbreaking to watch Tosh deal. If only Tosh had died, Owen's struggles with accepting emotion and love might've tipped him over into breakdown. But both of them going out together (even if Owen didn't know he was hearing Tosh's last words just as she heard his - and that sort of breaks my heart, and sort of cracks my shit up simultaneously) - that's actually the least painful way it could've gone.
And hey, this way I can tell stories in my head of the adventures of Owen & Tosh: Angels with Attitude! Because Tosh would look fantastic in white robes and wings, and Owen would be adorable in a halo.
Coming up next, the premiere of Torchwood: Afterlife:
"What the...Tosh? What are you doing here? For that matter, what am I doing here? I'm an atheist! Was an atheist! What the hell? ...or Heaven, as the case may be..."
